Here's the scoop: Would Geoff have been able to sing like this in 1984?
I think we can all agree that he could have. With that established, if Geoff went back in time and sung like this, how come he can't sing now like he did in the past? My point is that in the past, Geoff could sing anyway he wanted to. In this age, he is limited. Fuck all this shit about "growing as an artist" because it's offensive to say that those of us who wish Geoff could sing like he used to are closed minded.
have to say, very impressive performance;this kicks butt!!,after 1980'music-video,they have more power in performance and am simply amazed,of that Geoff Tate's still singing with strong capacity=.having Incredible Vocal Range!! what A LIVE band;-wish could have been there:)))Thanks for Sharing!!
megarockradio said: "1 person must be a Justin Bieber fan". haha, i was going to suggest a jealous Rush fan whose too young to ever have seen his band rock the fuck out, and not since 1981.
Since 1984, I've waited on many "blackened plains" through the "dead of [many] nights," and I'm starting to get the feeling that she's just not coming. :)
It's ridiculous to criticise this performance. First of all, try doing it yourself..ONCE. Then try doing it night after night on tour and the dedication it takes to 'keep' your voice intact. The voice naturally deepens as you get older but I think GT 'interpreted' his own melody perfectly here and other than some of the craziest OTT screams from the recorded version there was nothing missing here andl the main chorus was spot on. He's much more accurate than many of his peers and 'betters'.
@AJAYGEE ...period the end..well said!!...Great singers adapt to that change.....Like Halford/ Dio/ Dickinson...all the others fall by the wayside ripping people off. Using thier name to sell tickets (DOKKEN) while not giving a flying fuck on how they cannot perform their own songs properly. God Forbid that they keep training for their profession. Lazy Muther Father...(DON DOKKEN)
Whoaaa what a great version of this incredible track...sounds updated, more aggressive than original and in your face....love it!!! Geoff still has the pipes at his age....awesome.
to all dislikers bashing on Geoff Tate, all i can say is this. if you listen to the Tokyo version of this song your right that the notes are much higher, and his voice is great but on this his voice is more full and beautiful and has more depth which for me is much more important then a stupid range!
i think it might be time to call it a day for tate. not that he isnt still good especially for his age but he was just so elite in his prime it doesnt do it justice listening to this tuned down slower version of queen of the reich or any song for that matter. his style is just too hard to continue to do.
@ParabolH so your saying just beacause Geoff cant hit the notes quite as well as when he was 20, which is 100% natural he should just stop doing what he loves and is best at? his voice is still unbealiavable and easily as beautiful and powerful as before. he still has a 3 and a half octave range (A1-F5) which is amazing espeicaly for his age. i cant stand it when turds like you say shit like that. Piss off dude!
@TrueIronMaidenFan first off if you read my comment youd see i admitted he is still extremely good. second off, him singing the way he does now does not do the songs justice live. maybe its different for you but one of the reasons i would have wanted to see these guys live would be to hear tate hit those notes in person. he cant do that now. maybe youre older as your name suggests and you have more of a connection and saw them live whatever. but the appeal is no longer there if youre young
@TrueIronMaidenFan as for calling me a "turd", i dont get into youtube arguments with people but as i alluded to the fact your name suggests youre older, maybe you should think about actually growing up and seeing things from other peoples perspectives. youre menstrualesk tirade was a little uncalled for and id expect a lot more maturity from someone who i assume was alive when queensryche was still touring unlike myself.
@ParabolH no, not even close, im 16. so i bet im younger then you. but honastly i got mad cause Geoff is my 2nd favorite singer and saying he should stop singing when he still has a beautiful voice is just stupid!
@TrueIronMaidenFan alright ill meet you in the middle...he shouldnt stop singing all together. he is still good im not denying that and will give him credit where its due. maybe he should stay away from the older songs. like a queen of the reich for example. i dont know im a traditionalist when it comes to music. if you cant perform it the way it was meant originally i dont want to hear it anymore. that goes for all the bands i like no matter how much i like them.
@ParabolH uhg so it has to sound just like the original it isant good? for me i like this version better cause his voice is deeper and it realy fits the song. and also im seeing Queensryche in a month! CANT WAIT!!!
@LordSixty He seems frustrated here. That face he makes isn't just from strain on his voice. To add to it, he's also a natural bass and probably worked harder than most people have ever worked on anything to get to where he was in the 80's. You don't just wake up one day singing that way, that's for sure.
@LordSixty So very sad, but true. Queensryche were always one of my favorite bands from early childhood, thanks to a metalhead daddy. But man, this performance, though still good, sort of depresses me. Geoff's vocals, Scott not playing double bass on this song where it should be, and of course, no Chris! :( I'll always love Queensryche, but they'll never be what they were before. Comparing this performance of the song to the old Tokyo version... :(
he didn't lost his range, is is totally bullshit. this recording is just a 1 semitone below!!!! 1 semitone below is not very important tune down!
he can easily sing 1 semitone above i think. in the theory, if you don't give E5 and even F5, you never give Eb5 or D5 easily. but Tate can still give Eb5 easily with vibrato or without vibrato.
if you don't understand from vocal tech. don't write comment pls.
Don't be the asshole who figures out vocal notes. Your knowledge is self serving. No one cares. Years of punishment and touring. DUH! Accept him for the great vocalist he is.
This actually may be my favorite version. It's a punchier mix and I like the way Geoff is singing it. It's smoother and fits really well over the chunky drums. It's like butter on top of toast. I don't care that Geoff makes it easier for himself. This is a hell of a performance.
First off - its 30 years of touring-this song/EP came out in 81'-imagine singing/touring for 30 + years, he's now 51 and still sounds better than most of what you hear--of course if you're into metal you know there's a whole lot of great voices out there-but lets see what they will sound like in 30 years-if they last that long!
Its tough watching Tate struggle with the high's and not even attempt the intro, dude was THE BEST in his prime. I guess thats what 20yrs of touring and singing one of THE HARDEST sets in Metal/hard rock history, plus the boozing and those damn cigarettes will do to a once in a lifetime voice. He should have taken better care of that VOICE!! He admits now that smoking is his biggest regret. Dont get me wrong he sounds much better now but he just raised the bar so high in the early 80s.
@nattiep I'd have to agree with 13visions... He's still a lot better than many young singers out there... You can't expect his voice to be the same as 30 yrs ago (or think about Rob Halford, for one), but he still kicks ass...
@CrushJehovah i dnt think he hates metal, i think its jst not his primary concern in music,im sure if u ask him bout metal he'll hav atleast a few bands he lsns to
