How her family reacted to her belief is how some people's families react when they come out of the closet. Although it's probably not the best analogy, you get the point...families can be cruel. Although this film is marketed as a "thriller/ghost story," to me it plays out much more like a drama of a bad/awkward situation and how inept and unsupportive the fams reaction to their own daughter really is. Despite the luxuries of their "high society" ways, they ultimately treat Anna like crap.
A beautiful, unfairly overlooked film!!! Haunts my mind like an Opera. A film of profound meaning and emotion that most seem unable to acknowledge or handle.
I liked Anne Heche in her small part--small but meaningful. Nicole Kidman gives an astonishing performance. The score is hypnotic. A highly underrated film.
no doubt ,Kidman enlighten the movie ,but the plot is the weakest side of history. Definitely a director skilled in videoclip & ad cannot shot a dark, cerebral, tortuous theme.
The bath scene in this movie cause a big controversy when Nicole was naked and got passionate with a 10 yr old boy believed to be her husband's reincarnation in a bath tub. It was cut and re shoot. Till now the cut portion hasn't come out in the porn sites yet. It' gonna be a hit in porn clips.
JITANGOBURKA, Cameron Bright, the boy actoir in this film Birth, said that he and Kidman shot the bath scene alone- he did it by himself, and she did it by herself. Plus he said they had flesh toned body suits onand weren't nude at all in that. I'm just repeating what he said.
This movie was really creepy and just kept me wondering and wondering the whole time. However I looked on RottenTomatoes and the movie did not get great reviews. Why is that?
This looks so scary yet so interesting at the same time. I doubt they'd release a film that promotes female pedophilia, though. Anyway, have you ever heard of the film LOLITA with Jeremy Irons & Domonique Swain? Swain's character was 13 and Lolita is considered - and I quote- a "masterpiece".
I saw an article in the Friend and Foe message board about how they have to re shoot the bath scene. It mentioned that Nicole was naked and passionate with the boy. I'll try to look for the article again. Maybe it was inaccurate. Or maybe they were told what to say after the controversy when Nicole was booed on some occasions in London.
JIANGOBURKA, thanks for getting back at me. This thing is weird. I wonder why Cameron Bright gets involved in such controversial material. Do you ever wonder that? I mean, a ten year old boy reading such scripts and asking to do these parts? It just takes courage. I wonder what his personality is like sometimes. Weird. I bet they "were" naked together. Wow. Insane!
@pluto4847 , hey:-) No, Cameron Bright..in the bath tub scene he shot with Nichole Kidman in this. I still haven't seen the movie. I found a free site to see this at but have been too occupied with other films to watch this one:-(
FUCK! am looking for a movie of cameron bright, and i cant find it. it was a trailer.... he(cameron) looked through the window of his house and saw monkeys that looked like humans putting his mother into a car... and there where a luna park that seemed to be destroyed... anyboy knows this film?
look for Cameron Bright on IMDb, the list of movies he played in isn't long and I'm sure you can easily find the movie you're looking for from reading each plot.
the first time i saw this, i thought it was ok and moved kinda slow. the second time, it blew me away. the daring scenes, the acting and the unparelleled symbolism mark this film as one of the greats. Like most true art, i'm afraid it's brilliance wont be understood until years to come. very under rated. two thumbs up.
I understood it fine the first time. It's hardly a "difficult" film and what is "unparalleled symbolism," anyway? The problem is the last ten minutes, where we get a very prosaic explanation that falls flat as a pancake. No masterpiece that isn't understood but a stylish attempt at something different--till the last few scenes. Then they faced the problem everyone who has ever written this sort of thing faces--how to explain the inexplicable. They failed, but it was good fun till then.
I agree with your critic of the ending, but I really don't think it ruined the movie. It wasn't really about the boy, it was about anna and her evolving beyond her late husband. Of course he was faking. But if people focus on the twist that he was not really sean, their missing the point of the film. It's about the birth and change within us.
Boys? There was just one. And they didn't have sex. And it wasn't a 13-year old boy, it was the spirit of her dead husband, and yes, this film actually makes you believe that. Therefore, her desire for him seems perfectly natural and moving. It was totally predictable that some people would be focusing only on this sensationalist idea of Nicole in bed with an under-age boy, but that says more about them than about this magnificent film.
very difficult theme, I wonder if ths movie made any money, though I see the actors acted very well esp Nicole and the boy and the tone of the movie seems just right..the closing scene seemed disappointing but I suppose theres no way around it, is there?a bit doomed from the start, absurd maybe..

This film has fundamental error.
The question is if him knows the scenario writer or no.
The answer should come with other film. In the base of data of cinema. We said a base of data it should it has all the versions and if you become in their better form.
This little boy, is one of the best Child-actors I've ever seen!!!

What makes parents allow their children to participate in movies like this? It couldn't have been an easy role to take on for such a young boy.

This movie should have been nominated for multiple Oscars at the time. Seriously. At the very least:
Best Picture
Best Director - Jonathan Glazer
Best Actress - Kidman
Best Actor - Cameron Bright
Best Supporting Actress - Lauren Bacall
Best Screenplay
Best Editing
Best Cinematography
Best Art Direction
