Most of it (1.3 million) came from when I sold items I got in the 2nd failure dungeon ... the ones I got in the 3rd would have given even more (higher level), but I needed them for merging (and had no use for gold anyway).

SP is split into 7 attack types, and max SP only goes up when using attacks (of the same type) or fusing a character with more SP.
I had 7 "sword" SP and needed 9 for Ground Breaker, and Toss (harmless sword type skill) was the fastest way to do it ... I could have killed enemies with Shatter too, but its animation is too long.

And I'm not familiar with this game, why did tossing the vase help for SP? (Slamming it on your own head even)

That's really the only downer with going through with a TAS of a game prior to Disgaea 2 from NIS; you can't disable animations like that in battle.
