You people are stupid. & you sure as hell don't know your Fords.
The term "Big-Block" is a GM term. No true Ford enthusiast uses the term "big-block." Ford classified all their engines by series. The FE is just that, the FE series. It's not a big block FE, it's just a FE.
When you say big block FE it's like saying "I drive a Ford Silverado."
427 was a side oiler witched was all its own it was a FE but the block was much better with cross bolted main caps and larger oil galleries it the sides of the block med riser, high riser, and the CAMMER SOHC long live the FE=power
The 390 is a similar setup to the 352 FE (medium block). Since Ford did not take up the same classification system as GM, all FE motors are considered big blocks, however, with respect to any GM engine, the 390 is a small block. The 427/428 are true big blocks, though they are still a different setup than a big block GM.
In my opinion, the Chevy 427 was for a long time the only truly competent big block from GM. The 390 and 427/428 FE were in many respects superior, but both brands built a different engine for different purposes. The 426 hemi is probably my fav, but it all depends on what you want to do with it.
@richeywcassel All ford F.E. engines from the 332 C.I. to the 428 use the same block ( casting # 352), 352 to 427"s all had the same bore, displacement was changed by ford using different crank stroke and different length rods. All F.E. cranks and rods are inter-changable EXAMPLE- take a 390, change to a 428 crank, you get the one year only 410 C.I. Merc' motor. Take a 390 with 428 crank and rods you get 427 C.I. using stock ford parts. The bore size for the 427 was increased to get the 428.
I believe the 427 was based on the 351, as opposed to both the 427/428 being a 352 block with differing displacement. (The flow is 352-390-428;351-385?-427). The other stuff sounds about right, at least from what i know (which is not a whole lot).
@02mustangboy thats what im planning on doing with the 390 in my truck. Put the 428 crank in the 390 to make the 410. But do i have to change any of the other internals to match? with the larger stroke the piston wont come up and strike the head?
IM IN LOVE WITH IT. im going to get it paint cherry apple red put some white interior in it get some wire rims and a stereo and get the engine chromed out. im so excited :)

dvabel 1 the 352-390-427-428 fe engine is a bombproof motor rebuilding it will be expensive but worth it do the rebuild with edelbrock heads cam &Intake & Carb.
For a $100.00 your are rolling!

yet these "big block" FE fords can put out more power than gm could ever imagine with those cubic inches
