Similar to 'suzie 106' I had another JT song (Sister Josephine) played at my dads funeral service..the ones 'in the know' had tearful smiles, those not...total confusion or shock..not sure which..my dad loved Jake T...so do I..
To suzie 106: Utter brilliance! If I go before the Missus, the plan is to play The Hair of the Widow of Bridlington at my Funeral...She's from Bridlington & I'd be giggling all the way to the Burner...Love Jake, he was an Original smothered in Genius!
'Tis good to see that we still need the lyrics with a good dictionnary besides you in order to understand Jake Thackray's songs, if you are a non-native English. This is at least real music...
Hello Suzie 106, I was so nearly moved to tears after reading your comment, I too think Jake is/was brilliant, but he is an acquired taste. I was introduced to Jake by an old girlfriend back in 1967, with his early work, but funnily enough, my ex wife couldn't understand what I found so amusing about Jake, and my current partner, although I love her to bits, she has the same opinion. regards from 'Sillyfrog'.
@shillyfrog Thanks for your comment. I think it was Pam Ayres who described Jake as one of our greatest wordsmiths. I have the book with the words of most of his songs. What a poet! Do you like 'The Kiss'? Brilliant! I was privileged to see him live on three occasions. He was wonderful! That sort of talent will never die.
I used to have an occasional drink with Jake in Monmouth - unfortunately he couldn't stop and died alone ! Very sad that such a tallent should end up that way !
jake was my dads favourite. i took him to see him many times..he looked like my dad and had the same humour..i just bought" jake in a box" which is his ultimate collection he died too young. my dad passed away in oct and jakes tracks keep me smiling when i miss dad...every day xx
I'm french and I wanted to watch this video because of Georges Brassens (L) , a famous french singer. I don't understand all the lyrics and I'd like to have them written? (Please excuse my english that is pretty bad...^^)
My Dad died in November too (also no Will!) and we played this at his funeral service, to much laughter. Everyone was asking after who it was, I was shocked how few people knew who Jake was.
Although my late partner knew he was dying, the only thing he requested was that this was played at his funeral. We did, but his po-faced family were not amused! Those in the know thought it was brilliant. Glad he wasn't the only one to appreciate this.
If you want Thackray material, no need to trawl eBay. There's a 4 CD box set called "Jake in a Box" that collects all his studio recordings, and a double live album called "Live Performance".
I love this guy and though it's been a while since I've listened to him, this was always one of my favourites (I've often told my near and dears this would work well for my last will as well)
I thought this man extremely handsome and VERY sexy...
Thanks for Posting this.

Any Arctic Monkeys fans? Thackray was an inspiration for one of their songs as apparently the way he pronounced things was 'hilarious'! :-D

Very clever and original. Jake's material is only fully appreciated after repeated listening.
