pussy willow and in this video phil collins is playin drums with tull. i guess tulls drummer was sick or something if im wrong please correct me anyone
So far he played with most famous singers. He enjoyed playing, he keeps reminding everyone that he is a drummer after all. The guys he played so far will not complain he he he, having an expensive drummer with you is always entertaining, the music sounds different.....
Oh, right 4/4 beats over 3/4.. didn't realize that :)
But actually it is not Collins drums impro, if you listen to the record it is exactly that way, performed by Gerry Conway (not sure if creation came from him or Barriemore?) Anyway drum monsters all.
Its actually more a matter of it being 6/4 time which means you can divide it either into 3 groups of 2, or 2 groups of 3 without altering the music being played above the beat...
nope 4/4 over 3/4 is not accurate here...collins is simply toying with the emphasized beats, if you must put it more simply. He's a master at synchopation.
by far one of the best drummers ever...and was a revelation to hear him w/ till here. wow. what a lineup. (and also kate bush. karn and ure on this show??? omg!!!)
Interesting on this song the drum work (by Barriemore Barlow, performed by Phil in this concert) The song is 3/4 but you can note how they play and alternate the snare drum beats. There are riffs of /1-2-snare/ (1:54) and other riffs of /1-snare-3/snare-2-snare/ (2:46)...very rare snare beats for a 1-2-3 rhythm(not a drummer but drummers may get the idea, as typical rock is simply /1-snare-3-snare/). This is what I love from Tull, each song is a piece of art full of curious and complex stuff.
PRINCES TRUST ROCK GALA 1982 Date & venue: July, 21st 1982. Dominion Theater. London. UK. Cause: to raise founds for The Princes Trust charity. Performers (in alphabetical order): Joan Armatrading Gary Brooker (Procul Harum) Kate Bush Phil Collins Jethro Tull Mick Karn (Japan) Madness Robert Plant Pete Townshend (The Who) Unity Midge Ure
ian has to be one of the most talented musicians of the 20th century...he doesnt get enough credit for being both a great flautist, guitar player, mandolin player.
if you said zeppelin, sabath, aerosmith, uriah heap, but jethro tull sounds and look like king arthurs minstrels on acid, phil collins is one of the most talented musicians of all time i reckon! and yes most of todays rock-heavy sucks rhinoceros balls!!!
Collins is an often under-appreciated drummer (listen to Brand X sometime), but the coolest fact (or coincidence) here is that Phil and Ian are both left handed drummers, which is a rarity.
Nice! Two fine artists: Ian and Phil. I saw Genesis last year and phil did his usual dual drumming with Chester Thompson. It's nice to see him behind the kit here, he's a great drummer.
Phil's appearance makes this footage look from 1981 or '82. Genesis may had been on the "Three Sides Live" tour, and may had been playing a concert a day or two before or after Tull.
You're right. In my opinion mid to late '70s is when most of rock's greatest songs were written and performed with "real" musicians. Most of today's "studio-heavy" music just doesn't cut it for me...
i'm going down memory lane on this 70's and 80's buzz. i miss my uncle we used to listen to these songs. he made the same voice as him. he was so cool. god rest his soul. miss you loads.. uncle martin
It's just a shame nothing has changed, MTV is still churning out drivelly, warbling pop sh*t today, just now they churn out exploitative hip-hop rubbish too :-(
not hard to resist to music without rock or sound really bad, like celine dion, 50 cent, hillary duff :S or cradle of filth :P
seriously theres some stupid thing that i dont understand like the new song touch my body! you dont have to make more stupid than zztop songs if you cant have good music to back it. they must consult someone intelligent before recording some cd.

More simply put, Phil is playing a 4/4 over the 3/4 played by the band. No biggie. Great to see them all together.
