Ok you say if is not red is dead. After you cut the black tissue you keep cutting red tissue, was that blood over dead tissue or it was real red healthy tissue?
I'm just wondering I know the black tissue is dead - so thus no feeling - but when you start cutting near the "better" tissue did the man start feeling anything? Also I noticed you were using cuticle scissors, was this for cutting thicker material? At the end of you cutting you seemed to be having some resistance, was that the toe bone? I don't know why, but i find this stuff SO interesting! Yet if someone is throwing up or other stuff It's good night Irene!
@bambis46 The man is neuropathic,so the lack of feeling is not only commited to necrotic tissue ;) They are not cuticle scissors. Yes he removed phalangeal bone. Hope that helps.
I thought the maggots are mainly effective on sloughy tissue, they are not going to nosh their way through 4cm of necrotic digit? Some good stuff going on in Cuba cud b da end of 'crunchy' toes
I knew someone who injured his thumb at work. It turned black, he tried washing and soaking in salt water and soapy water but nothing. He came back the next day. with an onion wrapped around his thumb and the next day the little black spot was gone. He said he took the thin inside peeling off and wrapped the onion peel around his thumb for 5 hours or so.
Fuck, that was painful to watch! Normally I can stomach most of this stuff, but that cracking, and cutting of the skin and toe bone...I cringed and had to keep myself from passing out.
Jeez, the part that's actually disgusting to me is the fact that your/hes removing part of the persons body like it was nothing, and the person just sits there as it was nothing. Although point given, the dead nerves wouldn't send messages to the brain so you wouldn't feel any pain. The cracking noise was pretty creepy too. The actual blood and narcotic tissue from the gangrene (if thats what the person is suffering from), wasn't that disturbing to me. I hope it didn't spread further.
The maggots will eat the dead tissue and be more accurate than the turkey carving the doc is doing on his foot, but not prevent the infection inside the foot. That is why his foot looks otherwise healthy. Diabetes is horrible, you see the guy can't feel it cause all the nerves in his foot are dead, not cause he's sedated.
@TrueVideo: Yes, maggot therapy can be very effective, and much more precise as they only eat dead tissue...unfortunately it is very difficult to get patients to consent to the treatment.
@drsedicum I meant no disrespect by the turkey comment. Its sad that people wont allow thier brain to thrive with new ideas. But my question to you is, how does the insurance company deal with it if you were allowed by the patient to use maggots? would they even allow it?
@drsedicum one would think the patients would be more open to maggot therapy when they hear that they could save a lot more of their skin by letting the maggots do the job!
i love the doctor how he is just calm about it. He even throws out a little saying of his. But you know inside his head he is like wtf this is so nasty omg
i love how they just casually remove the toe in the doctors office..like, nbd, just gonna cut off ur toe :) another one will grow back!

In the 1920's Gasious Gangrene was being cured with low dose radiation from X-rays with better results than wtih todays anti-biotics.
