@peplo6 No, it is perfectly normal. They just like to be sheltered, and usually only swim around when you feed your fish. When I purchased my four Black Kuhli Loaches, the PetSmart worker told me that she rarely sees her Kuhli Loaches as well.
do you believe that black kuhlis and striped kuhlis enjoy each others company althought they're a different species? And I heard black kuhlis are more shy than striped. Do you believe black and striped kuhlis can interbreed?
Like you said, they sure love those bottom feeder pellets... Are they like plecos? Meaning, do they feed on algae growing in the tank? In a few months, I'm going to get a 55-gallon tank in my house, and wanted to know if these would be better than getting just plecos.
@kingbucky6 Well if you have lots of bigger fish then that would be a good reason to hide, but they are also less shy when in bigger group of like 5 or more. Also, apparently the more hiding places you give them, the less scared they will be about going into the open, because they feel secure.
uhm i have 2 new small ones and I only had them for 3 days, they just wont eat anything i give them any advice? theyre in a 30gal tank with guppies and tetras as tankmates, they have some driftwood to hide.what do you think is stopping them from eating?
@uareabuttlicker They are all kuhli's, just some of them have grown larger and some of them smaller. Whether they are striped or not doesn't seem to affect their size.
@thesoutherncross100 And it's good you did. Kuhli loaches are often caught in the wild and a lot of kuhli fry don't make it. It would be sad to see them used as a feeder fish. It's better to feed snakeheads something that breeds like mad like guppies, not just because it's cheaper, but because kuhlis are awesome :D
@thesoutherncross100 You obviously love animals thats why you have pets, but also you are killing many animals by feeding them to your own animal, how does it feel? i could never do this, I would never buy a predatory animals because i dont feel right feeding it another animal, i mean...i dont mind if the snake head hunts its prey, but it cant hunt in a tank because its in an enclosed area, unnatural
well i had one and i took down my tank couse my parrot fish ate it and then after a while it died so two years later thares still gravel and like an inch of water so i set up a little thing for a african i wanted to get so i fill it up i go have lunch go back down stares and guess what after two years that damn khuli loach aint dead so if you ever get one and you think it died check the grave you might just be surprized.

Feed them algae wafers. If you feed them flakes, they won't get only food cause the other fish will eat it before they can eat it.
@TheChrisTelevision I want to get them as pets, how big should the tank be per 3, also what fish can they peacefully live with? You seem to know a bit about them, thanks for the tips! (:
@MsClassicRemix they are tropical community fish so u can out them with any sort of tetra, guppy, swordtail, molly. etc and u can put them with angels and discus. u should have 3 per 8 gallons. glad i could help
@TheChrisTelevision Id so rather ask on here instead and get info from someone who has them rather than asking the pet store because I've been mis informed by them before and one of my fishies ended up dieing. Thanks so much! (:

I'm going to be getting 3 more on my next paycheck, hopefully the extra company will help them come out of the woodwork...

Adorable :) I love kuhli loaches. May I ask what type of plants those are? I really want some grass type plants in my aquarium, and made the mistake of buying Mondo grass... I am looking for a fully submersible grass type plant lol.
@Chelcake Well the grass type plant in this video grows really easily and spreads fast too, but it grows up to 2ft long. So if you want a long grass like plant which flows in the water then this is a good one. It's called Vallisneria Spiralis (usually shortened to vallis) and the best place I know to get it is on ebay from "last-trading-post".
You can get 20 big vallis from them for like £6.50.
Yes that would be fine. Barbs are actually really peaceful if kept in large groups. I have no clue why they are "semi-aggresive" because its the same idea for tetras. Tetras need large groups so the dont fin nip.
.... My Kuhlis never hide eventhough I got them lots of hiding places.... they're always there...staring at me ... next to where I'm sitting... maybe they think I'm one of the fish? Oo" .... or maybe they're just gangsta ... =_="
@Jallenbah I see... :D actually my Kuhli has another funny personality. One of them likes to sleep with its belly showing on the plant lol. And no, he's not dead, but I always find him sleeping like that. It's so funny.
god man i so want your tank !!!!!!!!!!!!! anyways i love kuhlis but sadly one of mine died so i only have 1 left could i fit a group of 4 in a 12 gl tank along with 5 guppies 1 dwarf gourami and 1 orange molly ??

@floromantique There are striped and unstriped kuhlis. They don't get the stripes with age. As for the sand thing, I haven't had a problem with it, in fact my tank got completely over-run with vallisneria spiralis so much so that I could barely see the fish and had to rip a load of it out :D
Gravel is a complete pain, it gets covered in algae and loads of crap gets into it, when you stir it up crap flies around in the water. None of these things are a problem with sand (I never clean it)
@madarauchiha1218 Hello, if you have the tank space, then adding a few more kuhlis will help this. I have 10 in my tank but a group of 5 is good. Also add more hiding areas in your tank. It might sound crazy, but it will make them feel more secure, so they won't feel like they need to burry themselves all the time.
@daphnelynnettte Sand stays clean by itself. I used to use gravel and it would get all algae covered and the fish crap and muck would sink down into it so that disturbing it would throw shit all into the water. I changed to sand, best choice of my fishkeeping life. It stays perfectly clean without needing to clean it at all. The kuhli's and plants probably help to keep it clean, but apart from water changes and the occasional cleaning of the filter, I don't clean the tank at all.
First off awesome fish, awesome tank, and most of all great job the second thing is i have two questions. What kind of sand do you use and doesn't it compress to the point that there is no oxgen sso the plants die? i heard that sand does that so i'm wondering because i want to but sand in my next tank.
@23hachy Sorry for the late reply. Thanks, thanks and thanks :D
I use play sand from B&Q (it's a "hardware store" as you say in the US) and I haven't had a problem with it killing the plants. I would recommend sand 100%.
Once you try sand, you won't find yourself going back to gravel. It never needs cleaning, doesn't get covered in algae, doesn't throw crap into the water if you stir it and IMO it looks lovely and tropical.
@23hachy Wow this video was a HUGE help! I bought some of those pellets for my other bottom dwellers but they never touched them so i had the bag of pellets put away behind all of my other stuff. I saw this video dropped 1 down and once it hit the bottom 1 of my loaches came out bit it swam back to the hiding spot of the other ones and brought them all out to eat. They went CRAZY over it! Thanks so very much!
Hi there, I am going to be buying a 75 gallon tank soon. I currently have 2x Striped Raphael Catfish and 1 Spotted Raphael Catfish. I really want to get a Kuhli Loach too. Are they better in groups? Territorial to other fish (cave dwellers)? And I would like to have a Red Oscar aswell, would everyone get along you reckon?
@PsychoBillyNiki Yeah I bought a new 55 Gallon tank instead of the 75. I've got 2x Striped Raphael, 1x Spotted Raphael, 3x Albino Corydora, 3x Green & Gold Corydora, and 3x Jumbo Skunk Corydora. All of these fish are very peaceful, I will be adding some Clown Loaches and Kuhli Loaches as well as a Royal Pleco. Decided to make a peaceful Catfish/Loach tank.
Nice, I have had dutch loaches (spined loach) in my tank. Together with perch, and when the perch grew bigger they ate the loach, its was the same week that I thought: lets get him in a separate tank soon. Do yours also dig therselfs in the sand?
@yoitsjp777 they are natural loners so you can just keep one, or as many as the tank can support. Hope this helps. If they reach there full size they can be up to 12cm! It burrows so make sure you have soft substrate or they will hurt themselves!
@hawkeye9901 I can answer that, get some normal sand from the beach, wash it heaps in fresh water, mix it around and pour the water out till it's clean and not salty. And to clean it is easy, but if your using a suction funnel/hose make sure you don't suck all the sand up
ohhh what do u feed em cuz i got 3 in my tnak and i dont feed em anthing.. but they've been living for 3 years now... i throw some of those alge pellets ( i think thats what theyre called) theyre green and circuler.. but i throw those in for my pleco... so wdf aare my loaches eating?
What causes the difference between striped and solid color? Mine had brightly colored stripes, and after about a year he morphed into solid dark brown. Is it just age? He's like 3.6" long. And yes he is still perfectly healthy and happy.
@tmaxxman33 They are different species. The solid color kuhlis are called black kuhli loaches and the striped are just called kuhli loaches. The morph you're talking about is something that i've heard about. I'm not sure how that could happen but i don't think it's something to worry about too much. And i doubt it's age. Kuhli's can last many years in a good tank.
I want some of these........I have a 10 gallon tank how many of these can i put in it and with what kind of other fish can i put with them and how many???????????????????????????/
@Tapil Mmm, in general they will not reach 4 inches. Most of mine are about 3" and I've had them for about 2 and a half years. They haven't grown for ages, I don't think they are going to start :3
give them some time to get used to the tank? my tank is 56G and kinda heavily planted.i like i said before, they're small, but now that i think about it, i do see my black loach every day, nevermind, anyway, is it normal that i don't see EVERY SINGLE small loach every day? should they all be out at once? and my last q, if mine are ike 1 inch and fairly thin (not enough to be eaten, my biggest fish is a 2" male swordtail) how long should it take them to be full grown? (like my black one or yours

hey again, i have some kuhlies 7 ( 1 black 6 tiger) the back on is 4 inches long while the others are tiny, about 1-1.5 incehs and i see my black on, every few days, so i know he's ok, but i've never seen all 6 of my others, is it cuz they're smal;, i see like 3 at a time and that's it never more than 3 . . .should i be worried or are they still a bit shy because they're really small? all their tank mates are frindly and snall as well, what do you think, should i be worried or should i just
Hey again, i have one black kuhli loach (4 inches) and 6 striped ones (1-1.5 inches, they're small) I have not seem more than 3 of my striped ones at a time. is this normal? my tank is 56G and kinda heavily planted. I see my black one every one in a while and i see the striped ones every day ,but never all 6, is there a way to see if all are in there? could any be dead, i have not seem any dead bodies and all te tank mates are friendly livebeares or cardinal tetras or halrequin rasbors. . .help!
is there a diff from the back and striped ones? i like the blacks ones A LOT but my pet store does not sell the striped ones and i was wondering if they're like a special breed of kuhli? + do you kuhlies burry themselves in the sand or just sift though it?
@ciciironwill27 They don't seem to burry in my sand. It's too fine and they wouldn't be able to breath in it. They burrowed in gravel I had in my old tank though.
There's no difference other than appearance between the striped and brown ones. They are just slight variations (both naturally occuring)
What kind of sand did you use? I've got some play sand my buddy tried to use but it didn't work for him. first of all he didn't wash it, but when he put it in his tank his filter just pushed it around and the sand was constantly being circulated and churned up..
@Jallenbah He had a penguin 330 in a 25-29 gallon tank. No air stone. W:hen he tried to wash it he said half of it was washed away with the water in his yard.
@Jallenbah He had a penguin 330 in a 25-29 gallon tank. No air stone or undergravel filter. When he tried to wash he said a bunch of it was washed away with the water in his yard. His filter intake was about half way down, he shortened it up and it didn't seem to help. Is there something different I can do so I don't have to tear down my tank 2-3 times?
i have 4 kuhli loaches one is 4inch, one is 2 inch and the other 2 are 1.5 inches. only the 2 inch one ever comes out. even at night. did this happen 2 yours or anyone elses???
It's a 7.1 megapixel Kodak ZD710, I've had it a while now. It films and takes pictures really nicely, the only downside is that it takes batteries rather than just being recharged.
what are the stripped ones called?

I used to use gravel and it would get all algae covered and the fish crap and muck would sink down into it so that disturbing it would throw shit all into the water. I changed to sand, best choice of my fishkeeping life. It stays perfectly clean without needing to clean it at all. The kuhli's and plants probably help to keep it clean, but apart from water changes and the occasional cleaning of the filter, I don't clean the tank at all.
Jallenbah 8 months ago
First off awesome fish, awesome tank, and most of all great job the second thing is i have two questions. What kind of sand do you use and doesn't it compress to the point that there is no oxgen sso the plants die? i heard that sand does that so i'm wondering because i want to but sand in my next tank.
23hachy 8 months ago

CanadianCatastrophes 10 months ago
@CanadianCatastrophes oscars are too argressive for comunitty tanks. kuhli loaches do prefere groups i do beleive ;) hope this helps!
Ileikdrumzz 10 months ago
@CanadianCatastrophes The fish you have will eat them X-X
PsychoBillyNiki 10 months ago
@PsychoBillyNiki Yeah I bought a new 55 Gallon tank instead of the 75. I've got 2x Striped Raphael, 1x Spotted Raphael, 3x Albino Corydora, 3x Green & Gold Corydora, and 3x Jumbo Skunk Corydora. All of these fish are very peaceful, I will be adding some Clown Loaches and Kuhli Loaches as well as a Royal Pleco. Decided to make a peaceful Catfish/Loach tank.
CanadianCatastrophes 10 months ago
Nice, I have had dutch loaches (spined loach) in my tank. Together with perch, and when the perch grew bigger they ate the loach, its was the same week that I thought: lets get him in a separate tank soon. Do yours also dig therselfs in the sand?

hey i think one of your loaches has ich or fungis. i like them multi-colored ones; they are hard to find
INFOWARforYourMind 1 year ago
@yoitsjp777 they are natural loners so you can just keep one, or as many as the tank can support. Hope this helps. If they reach there full size they can be up to 12cm! It burrows so make sure you have soft substrate or they will hurt themselves!
bakemekillers 1 year ago
Have your angle fish ever ate one of your loachs? I have few loachs and been thinking of getting a anglefish but didn't know if it was safe
japer2008 1 year ago
@hawkeye9901 I can answer that, get some normal sand from the beach, wash it heaps in fresh water, mix it around and pour the water out till it's clean and not salty. And to clean it is easy, but if your using a suction funnel/hose make sure you don't suck all the sand up
pussytastegood1 1 year ago
What type of sand do you have in that tank? I've been looking to use sand in my new tank but idk yet. Is it tough to clean?

haydenater122 10 months ago
What causes the difference between striped and solid color? Mine had brightly colored stripes, and after about a year he morphed into solid dark brown. Is it just age? He's like 3.6" long. And yes he is still perfectly healthy and happy.
tmaxxman33 1 year ago
@tmaxxman33 They are different species. The solid color kuhlis are called black kuhli loaches and the striped are just called kuhli loaches. The morph you're talking about is something that i've heard about. I'm not sure how that could happen but i don't think it's something to worry about too much. And i doubt it's age. Kuhli's can last many years in a good tank.

is this a 80 gallon? I was about to order some kuhli next month after my tank cycles...
Are they active/remotly interesting besides at feeding time?
Tapil 1 year ago
@Tapil Uh, no it's not an 80 gallon, I have no idea where you picked that number from :S It's a 25 gallon.
They are active at non-feeding times, because they constantly filter through the sand to find food.
Jallenbah 1 year ago
@Jallenbah I pulled that number out of my ass because depth perception is limited through a computer screen xD
I know these fish get alil over 5inches so i did some... uh math? hush! I want 3 of em
Tapil 1 year ago

I see my black one every one in a while and i see the striped ones every day ,but never all 6, is there a way to see if all are in there? could any be dead, i have not seem any dead bodies and all te tank mates are friendly livebeares or cardinal tetras or halrequin rasbors. . .help!

Tav0riel 1 year ago
is there a diff from the back and striped ones? i like the blacks ones A LOT but my pet store does not sell the striped ones and i was wondering if they're like a special breed of kuhli? + do you kuhlies burry themselves in the sand or just sift though it?
ciciironwill27 1 year ago
@ciciironwill27 They don't seem to burry in my sand. It's too fine and they wouldn't be able to breath in it. They burrowed in gravel I had in my old tank though.
There's no difference other than appearance between the striped and brown ones. They are just slight variations (both naturally occuring)

What kind of sand did you use? I've got some play sand my buddy tried to use but it didn't work for him. first of all he didn't wash it, but when he put it in his tank his filter just pushed it around and the sand was constantly being circulated and churned up..
CrunchieDan 1 year ago
@CrunchieDan What sort of filter was he using? Not an under-gravel I hope :P
He must have had his filter intake wayyy too close to the sand or something.
If he put an airstone under the sand then thats why it got churned up.
Not washing the sand could cause it too though, because when you wash it you get rid of all of the silt-ish bits which like to float.
Jallenbah 1 year ago

Also, I filmed this through a magnifying glass :P
