Hard to put into words how much I have loved this song for so many years.
Of all the versions I've heard though, I have to say the version on the "Blue Asphalt" bootleg is easily my favorite. That version was released to radio stations only back in the late 70's as part of a 4 song EP. Lyle's piano playing is more melodic in the middle of the song. I used to hear that version of "San Lorenzo" frequently on one FM station back then - a very nice memory.
@RoadNasty I actually scored that Promo EP off Ebay about 2 years ago, in fantastic shape! I have the Blue Asphalt boot, but it's a bit noisy, isn't it...
This is off of American Garage, the first album of his I bought. I have followed Pat through the years a saw him live twice. He continues to inspire, illuminate, and entertain. Thanks so much for this lovely clip!
@JamKar1 this isn't from American Garage, it's from the "Pat Metheny Group" album, the one BEFORE American Garage. This is apparently the American Garage Tour, however ... since they do play the title track from that record.
I have listened to every note and cymbal strike and piano and guitar lick and bass run in this beautiful song for thirty years +. I never tire of it. Look at these beautiful brilliant young musicians. Saw Pat one birthday of mine in Vancouver at the Queen Elizabeth theatre. Amazing, simply amazing. A BIG part of my life thank you !! wonderful to see it on Youtube. wow!! Reminds me of music college too!
I know the arts do not compete, but here is another guitar player that I think is a better, more original and more relevant player. Just a thought. I had no idea this guy was such a monster. youtube.com/watch?v=xEuaurcvtik -Yes I'm totally serious. Metheny's Lexicon chorus thing wears on me. But this other guy is fresh.
I remember being in the military at Fort Hood, TX, a fellow soldier told me to listen to this jazz sampler album he had pick up from the local radio station. The DJ on that particular album name was Orlando Bonner, this was back in 1978. I heard this song out of about (12) other nice jazz songs. I loved it the moment I heard this song, San Lorenzo. Went out the next day and bought the album. (American Garage) Been a PMG fan since that day.
I first heard and saw Pat and the group on a program called Soundstage, and they were doing this song. It made me a fan forever.

The whole band is outstanding, yet none of them really stands out... A real example of a fine symphony. Hard to find these days.

Saw this live in the seventies. Lyle's piano solo actually moved me to tears, the only time that has ever happened to me. Sublime.

@Srayliji " piano solo actually moved me to tears, "
That happened to me in 2010 but it was The Enid with Robert John Godfrey on piano. What a nice man too.

Been following them since this was released, some 32 years ago. To date it remains a stunning composition, one of Pat + Lyle's best ever.

As the exuberant fan says, close to the crescendo on the live version on Travels, "It's always been Lyle!!"

ya looks like he says "faster" at the start
gmtnosa00 2 years ago
no, I think he was referring to how shitty the start was, because he was not in sync with Mayes on the harmonics.
