  • i love this video!,

love this music, actors, screenplays, and message!

    what a great work!

    soooooo impressed!

  • omg......... DON'T MICROWAVE FOAM CUP NOODLE CONTAINERS!!!

    This girl!... gawshhhh!

  • Videoの出来は素晴らしい 曲も美しい

  • "unable to afford a college education: priceless"

I see what they are trying to say, but the logic kind of bothers me. You don't wanna buy 'inability to afford an education'; you WANNA buy 'ABILITY to afford an education'. so it should be

"ABILITY to afford a college education: priceless"

  • (Cal ranking tumbles from 2nd best. The reality of University of California Berkeley’s (UC Berkeley) relative decline are clear. In 2004, for example, the London-based Times Higher Education ranked UC Berkeley the second leading research university in the world, just behind Harvard; in 2009 that ranking had tumbled to 39th place.)

  • o well... 30 years from now... we r gonna be all stupid again :D since the world is turning to a world where education is a work force... it will just die :)

  • i dont understand what it meant by saying unable to afford an education: priceless.

    Dosent priceless mean good?

  • And this is why we need to stop cutting taxes for the richest one percent.

  • very well done

  • excellent

  • Lol, you freakin have a macbook.

  • awesome video!

  • Great video! The issues at hand depress me though...I hope they find a means to make higher education more accessible.

  • That's why CSUs provide a much better bang for the buck. The price is half of what UC students pay. You might as well be going to a private college if you go to a UC.

I was undecided between transferring to SDSU and UCSD, but I think I've made up my mind now.

  • Awesomeness

  • UCB Chancellor Birgeneau Loss of Credibility, Trust. The UCB budget gap has grown to $150 million, and still the Chancellor is spending money that isn't there on expensive ($3 million) consultants. The Chancellor had to hire consultants to engage his Faculty, Staff and the UCB Academic Senate. Successful leaders do not need people from outside their org. to engage their Staff, Faculty. The Chancellor is not doing his job. Instead he is spending $3 mil to do his job. Contact Sacramento.

  • Inflacion no se disminuye!~!!! qué más podemos esperar? Estamos en Califas el estado agotado de económico bajo!!!

  • this has to be put up as a commercial on tv in california. great cideo

  • @rayout7 *video

  • Very effective ad! nice work

  • yo I live in 3413! lol

  • suprisingly good (coming from a UC student).

  • Comment removed

  • Lets be honest, that would have been an Advanced Calculus text book...

  • this is rly good i thought it was real

  • AMAZING FLIM!!

  • It's sad how true this is :/

  • LOL...funny and true.

  • $60 for a fucking paperbound text book - no wonder textbook publisher sales reps can afford all that crack (true story)

  • wow that was enlightining

  • @PacisTerra in your case education was obviously optional

  • bad actress and voice, but good direction and theme

  • Excellent video. They will raise tuition and then give themselves a raise, watch they will do this say that they saved the system millions so tey deserve the raise.

  • @loriefran I think the California educational system actually needs the money....

  • yes the system needs the money but not for raises to the administrators. they need it for grants, loans, new equipment, lower tuition, new buildings, more full time teachers and a pay raise for the teachers, not the administrators

  • Obviously there are no ways for me to know but what I was saying is that I don't think the raise in tuition will go to the administrators but instead to the things you listed.

  • It's so true.

  • raise those tuitions!

  • Watatow... nice soundtrack too!

  • It's unbelievable that this country still does not get it. Education should be a right, not a privilege. If the government thinks that as a country they can not support education, what are they supporting, ignorance?

It seems to me that ignorance is way more expensive.... Aren't we paying for that mistake already? In the meantime we; parents and students will be facing the effects on this increase... Effective December 18th!!!.

  • @fernanp i learned more from wikipedia than I did from all of k-12. simpsons put it best: many schools are nothing more than hamster wheels.

  • @fernanp totally agree

  • @fernanp it's not unbelievable, it's simply the product of capitalism. Anti-socialist politicians and the rich are dominating this country's economics and politics. Why not socialism? because Americans F***ing hate communist.

  • I love this and the meaning of it.

Then why is it that SD professors wanted to shut down 3 of the UC schools.

  • Epic.

  • Excellent, both the video and acting

  • great job!

  • ...got me wet

  • Screw amazon, go international edition

  • thats not the point ass hat.

  • But "priceless" is a good thing...

  • I like this video! It's really well made and I can't agree more with it.

To all those ranters at the bottom, there's definitely something wrong with them. Public education is public education for a reason - to be affordable.

  • Give credit to Sigur Ros for the dramatic music please!

  • aww thats sad

  • i was expecting for everything else there's visa at the end for some reason

  • Aww the endings so sad

  • so after you graduate you work hard for an extra few months and pay back your loans... life isn't one big bailout.

  • it doesnt matter whether or not Universities are worth the money or not for what you get, your degree is intellectual credibility without one your chances of finding a good job are slim

  • Yeah Right. Dorks come out of universities. Total Rip Offs. Universities make donkeys. Nothing Much. It's just a freaking business. Ripping off poor people out of there money.

  • okay....this video doesnt make sense. priceless has a positive connotation and 'there're some things money can't buy' doesnt go with a rise in tuition bc money is exactly what u need in such a situtation. i see what they were trying to do though but FAIL.

  • @GARATINAW - You should take AT LEAST an English course, your spelling BLOWS.

  • Welcome to the new America!

  • yea wats left of it

  • lol. aewsome. diner is .50c

every1 can afford get a higher education. all u need is a gun and a getaway car.

& be willing to spend years in jail

  • LOL. Dinner.

  • SIGUR ROS!

  • Great shots in this film--poignant as well. Now do you need a postive film to get over your depression? Check out "Lydia and Otto", a b & w parody shot in HD, new this week--it's hilarious!!

  • HAHA OMG PWNT!

  • see collage isent a good thing alwas im not goin collage sucks lol

  • wow LOL! talk about failure.

  • Yep... by your grammar, that was clearly a winning decision for you.

  • ok look my grammar is perfect i just don't do it on the cumputer and im 13NOt 18 so srry but i could care less

  • Dinner at home: 50 cents, so sad because this freaking UC is sucking out all our money!

  • Very Powerful video, as an UCSD alumnus, I feel you all and always support you guys.

  • Instead of feeling them up, why not throw some money their way then. Feel free, so long as none of it is mine.

  • Wow, That was really cool! You can feel the emotions in it. Just by how you angle the camera and when they are all walking slowly. Beautiful.

  • I noticed she did pay 1.59 for a pen and 28 for Jansport backpack. I carried my books and got free pens from job fairs or whoever was tabling on campus when I was in college.

  • Very sad. Community colleges in California are already overcrowded because many students can't afford to go to UCs and CSUs.

  • dang it happens. The sad part is that some parents cant afford higher education for their kids and the kids have to spend their youth working , it sucks

  • If you only pay $10,000 a year to go to UCLA, I don't see the big deal. My scholarship pays for half of my tuition, and I am paying $12,000 a year.

  • That's why you are an idiot and not at a UC. For some of these students and their families, a few hundred dollars may mean the difference between attending college and finding work to help support their families.

  • I am an idiot for not going to UCLA? Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaahahahahahahahahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!

  • Well... it was a good run at college. I need to show my Engl and SOC professor this, haha.

  • I'm glad I just graduated from UCSD in March (09). I feel for you all.

  • FOR THAT THERE IS MASTER CARD.. duh

  • Hear, hear JimBobJenkins. The "California flight" has already begun.

  • The question, of course, is where else to get the money from. You could cut faculty salaries. And then will also see all the professors leave for the UT system. Good video, though.

  • California is screwed financially. I go to UCI myself, the tuition increase will suck :\

  • You mean poor enough?

  • well obviously you aren't because it's "you're" not "your"

  • Ut oh.. watch MasterCard come take this video down.

They've done it many, many times before!

  • What, you thought the government employed teachers and their powerful union was going to take a pay cut so you could get a degree?

lol....they'll be sipping latte in the local cafe pontificating on the merits of progressive ideals for the common good of man while you're scrambling to find a university in line with market forces.

    don't worry though...Atlas will Shrug.

  • Dear @Nickelodeon2002: UC Professors, staff, graduate students, Adjuncts ACCEPTED AND TOOK pay cuts & furloughs. PLEASE do your homework before you PONTIFICATE. You're entitled to your own opinion, not your own reality.

As far your neo-randyan vision of the world, CELEBRATE. The UC system, once the top public university system in the country is being PRIVATIZED. Saludos!

  • Thanks for the information, I can't really believe it's being privatized, but let's say you are accurate. If that's the case, why is tuition being hiked if the cuts the Berkley Staff is taking are significant? The free market is going to eventually determine what tuition should be....that's a good thing. What's not a good thing is the UC customers(students) protesting on campus. In the real world, when customers protest they usually don't do it too long until they find a better firm to pay for.

  • You continue to put forth your ideological constructs independent of facts. Again, DO YOUR HOMEWORK. I'm not making stuff up. See for yourself. Try the GOOGLE. I cannot educate you and debate you at the same time. It's twice the work for me.

  • Chill out man, I just granted you the privatization issue. It doesn't change the fact UC's customers are pissed. It can't function long like that or everyone's gonna bolt. Just because I lacked understanding in one small area it doesn't invalidate the rest of what I'm saying.

  • I did just read that UC is being privatized, again-thank you for the information/education. Athough I read one campus is still receiving about 6% state funds and I'll assume it's in that area for most of the campuses...still better that what it was I'm sure. Unfortunately for the UC Staff...it looks like their customers are in revolt and it may be time for them to re-evaluate before losing them all.

  • The customers are in complete unity with Staff and Faculty. UC Regents (CEO's in your parlance) are the ones who need to change. Their salaries and byzantine policies such as one-sided fee increases to "customers" & cuts to labor) are in line with Wall Street privateers. That's objective turth. Not opinion. Watch the national news. All students that have been interviewed are unanimous on this throught the UC campuses.

If you want me to chill out, start making some sense por favor!

  • I'm going to set aside your jackass attitude for a moment to address one patently obvious mis-statement. "The customers are in complete unity.." etc. etc. How far do you have to look to see this is completely false? Do a simple search on "UC riots" to enjoy a host of student protestations saying otherwise. You may think their anger is directed toward only the Regents, but you are wrong. They are upset over the cost of tuition-nothing more or less. I'll bet like most other companies that Regent...

  • pay amounts to a small fraction of the cost of running a UC campus. In fact I just looked up the total cost of your 26 Regents is just under

$11 million. The UC system has a Fall 2008 enrollment of over 211,000 students. Simple math makes that about $52/student for the "Regent" class. LMAO what a weak ass argument you make. I may have lacked some understanding in regard to UC's privatization but at least I've got a basic conceptual understanding of finance and economics.

  • The reality is that a savings of between $2000-$2500 a semester(the tuition hike varies by campus i see) is only going to come out of the hide of staff....naturally the biggest expense of the campus. You can't get rid of bricks & mortar and their associated cost (by the UC model anyway...internet college is gonna hurt the UC model even more) so there is no place else to cut. Unless of course the UC admins think they can squeeze the student like proverbial turnips...but we'll have to see on that.

  • Uh--they already have?

I don't think the faculty at the UCs are unionized.

  • They might think they have...but they real impact won't be know right away until enrollment figures are in after the hike. That doesn't also account for future lost revenue to potential students that either don't want to graduate with a ton of debt...or can't get loans in the first place.

  • Amazing...thank you!!

  • So inspiring! :) Very well done.

  • AMAZING!! a tear dropped . . .

  • awesome vid! I never did anything this cool in COGN 20! xD

  • Great job! Very well put together.

  • fantastic job - the COMM dept is so impressed with your achievement!

  • GREAT VIDEO!!!

    UCSD FTW!! =)

  • sooooo good.

  • HI REBECCA UNG!

    Kevin

  • this video is so good! great job!

  • One of the biggest things that irks me about californian scholarships are students that ride them with a 2.0-2.99 gpa. I have many friends who attend UCs and have their way payed for by the government, and what do they do? piss away the money by partying and failing their classes.

In states, they take away all your scholarships if gpa falls under 3.0. Change will happen in california in scholarships, healthcare, and unnecessary social programs. It's not the UC's Fault- its the states fault.

  • Some states keep track on what you pay. They ask for everything. If things does not add up or whatever they cut your scholarship.

  • I dunno~ i think i like sarcastic videos better, but yeah, not many people get sarcasm xD

Anyways, this is straight-forward so everyone can get the message.

Well... frankly... that extra $2000 really wouldn't make college unaffordable... yea... financial aid...

But i think this is more important to international student because they will have to pay as much as going to a private universities, which rarely have any problems registering for classes. Relatively, they don't get what they paid for.

  • I love this video... but really what is there that students like ourselves can do to stop this... If you know, please let me know because I don't know. It seems all we can do is bring awareness. I mean to me that just means that instead of just us UC students knowing we're struggling financially, a few 100 million more people know and are watching us suffer... What good does that do...? I wish there was something rock solid we could do to stop this...

  • Education its my armor against those that try to oppress and marginalize me. Without it i feel powerless. I hope that there wont come a time that people of color and other disadvantaged communities will just be a part of the past of higher education... a dying species, slowly going extinct.

I feel for ppl at the cal states, but i think this video's purpose was not to seek pity for UC students, rather to raise awareness on the issue any institution of higher education is or will be facing.

  • Wow, the video is really good. It gets the point straight across, that students can't afford tuition hikes. Education should be priceless, not paying for college. There are also tuition hikes in NY, probably many other states, and student protests among them. $1929 is a lot... I hope these protesters can raise awareness to bring about change.

  • Nice vid, did you do everything yourself?

I agree with your statement 100%.

Education should be available to all.

  • I have to say that it was well done.

I don't want to seem mean or anything, but I have to say that I kind of find it hard to feel that bad for the UC campuses, only because they get way more funding than us CAL States. They get way more sections for the same amount of students we have, and way more professors. As it is we cut not only classes, professors, and basically zero research funding, we have furloughs and tuition increases. One last thing, we have very few donors.

  • Again, I don't want to come off as arrogant or ill-considerate, because I believe that UC's really do have a right to protest, but I think they should consider that there are schools in way more turmoil than they are. We of the CSU system are basically hanging on a thread for keeping our campuses open. And as a student at CSUN, I can tell you that I'm pretty much not even guaranteed any of my classes for my next semester. Why? No funding. Bad time for me to be a double major.

  • then DO something about it! organize a movement at your CSU! don't be discouraged if you see that no one supports your cause- believe me if you lead people will follow.

  • True, however, it's not really discouragement. I was simply suggesting that there are others that are doing worse, but it's still manageable. But again, I still agree with the UC message. I would be pissed off too if i was going to have a 32% increase in tuition. I'm just grateful that our dumb-ass for a governor hasn't suggested that... well, yet.

  • Personally, I think that even though UCs seem to be getting all the attention for the protest, it's just the beginning. When we protest about the hikes, we're not just focusing on ourselves; we're fighting for all the other schools out there in California. In a way, we're just a role model.

  • Very true. And I agree, you guys are the biggest role model, but sometimes, it can lead to even worse consequences is what I'm sort of suggesting. I'm not implying that, yes, this will happen, but we must always consider that it can potentially worsen for either one group, or all of us. Either way, we're all in the same boat, almost. All I know, I'm jumping ship before this worsens. That was my plan from freshman year, but now it not an option. Transfer apps here I go.

  • I wish you guys the best of luck, and hopefully, our situation will improve within the next semesters. This is really getting ridiculous! We're supposed to be producing graduates!

  • the music makes me wanna tear up.

  • put that shit on TV!!

  • great video of a really important topic

Im showing my friends this :)

  • Incredible. I'm a 3rd year transfer from a working class poor neighborhood. Were it not for fin aid I wouldn't be able to afford the increase either.

For those not affected by the fee increase no doubt they've encountered the difficulty finding open classes.

  • To get an education: read lots of non-fiction books, good # fiction, have several close relationships- Schools are mostly hoop jumping enroute to "credentials". You learn more in the dorms.

  • Keep it up man, quality stuff

  • In our Community College:

    -Pen:same price

    -Backpack-$20-$50

    -Physics textbook-$210+

    same problems.............

    Amazing video!!!!!

  • saw you guys filming this on the entrance to Geisel library. good work. nice color tones and DOF. what equipment was used for this?

  • thanks! i used a canon 7d with prime lenses, final cut pro, and color

  • CANON FTW

  • the girl is extremely pretty and this is just really great :D

  • This is definitely going to be me if they keep on increasing fees.

And it would be really terrible if I had to dropout with only another year to go.

  • You have very good cinematography in all your videos. Great job!

  • dude what a hottie

  • Wow! Great job guys! Definite A on this COGN project, I would think.

  • that's right!

  • You need to do something with WongFu. This is damn good.

  • @DisturbedAng3l thinking the same thing here.

  • that was very well done!

  • wow... this is amazing!

  • godddddddd damnnn amazing

  • wow man...yet again crushin it.

  • ROYCE YOU FRICKEN AMAZING!!!

  • *sniff* Maybe it's the background music, but this video is really powerful for me.. Even though I recently graduated from college, many of my friends are still in school and are really feeling the pinch. My heart and my support goes out to all of you!
