Spiritualist musician extraordinaire. Perfect background music for a delightful, evening's ouija board session. I wonder if she ever played the tarot or crystal ball?
i think the reason why the human likes the theremin so much is because sounds like a human voice. every tone this thing makes could be sang by human (i know that every note can be played by a instrument and sang by humand but this sounds like it). amazing. simply amazing
I love the theremin, just discovered it today, but I only have one concern. Every theremin player I have watched always uses ridiculous amounts of vibrato. Which is appropriate in many cases but this constant to me is very annoying. There is little difference in the vibrato of difference pitches.
Clara Rockmore's haunting rendition of "Hebrew Melody" has the same heartbroken quality of Josef Hassid's masterpiece performance. Ms. Rockmore was a virtuosa of the theremin, as much as Hassid was a virtuoso of the violin. I will always associate that poignant melody with these two great artists. A brilliant and soulful performance!
is it possible to play samples on a modern theremin? i mean, the sounds get a bit boring after a while. a well recorded cello sample set or a beautiful clarinet sound would be nice for a change. ;)
modern theremins are really advanced, some of them come with samples, others come with keyboards so you can make loops, i don't really know too much, but try looking for Roland's D-Beam, awesome!!!
I knew her so well, I was the last outsider she permitted into her life. I became her closest friend. We all appreciate these video gifts made by my late buddy, the great Bob Moog and his then-wife, Shirleigh.
I will make in time a theremin page, which is just now getting started at FreeWrights Peer Review, in the blog section, "reid", "The Magic of the Theremin". Many hundreds of copied pages of her archive need to be put up for pro bono purposes, including her final interview. Time...
This is really magnificent! I am amazed how she is able to play this instrument flawlessly in tune, with nothing to touch or hold on to for reference. That said, she of course goes far beyond that to produce heart-wrenching, expressive music. Wow!
I totally agree with you, bluetsunami about Mrs. Rockmore's skills. However; let's not overlook her sister Nadia Reisenberg's piano accompaniment which was also flawless (try playing deliberately slow, methodical low notes while at the same time rapidly playing trilling high notes at the very same time from 3:50 to 4:45 ). Together, these ladies made magic due to their abiding passion for making excellent music via challenges! They took music to another dimension while they lived in it!
@bluetsunami -- That's Nadia Reisenberg, and she was Rockmore's sister?? I knew about Nadia and her recordings long before I ever heard of the theremin or Clara!
I wonder why the "description" of the video doesn't say so......it should.
@larchmontmark, you bet, they were sisters, and greatest of friends. As children, Clara played violin, and with Nadia, the duo toured all of Europe, just after WWI, to packed housed and rave reviews. I never got to met Nadia, but she was so kind and thoughtful. A third sister, Newta, was also a beauty, but never played music.
They were a sensation for as long as they lived. You all can see more of Nadia in Theremin, an Electronic Odessey, Bob Moog, too. Great people, all of them.
@ReidWelch -- Thanks for the reply. And BTW -- I got to meet and hear Bob Moog before hardly anybody had heard of him. I was a student at Cornell when he was first bringing out the synthesizer and was lucky to be there when he gave a presentation. Little did we know how big it would become. And I never heard of the theremin until many years later.
Bravo !! Bravissimo !!

wikipedia escribe" el timbre de los theremines se asemejaba a algo entre un violonchelo y una voz humana." eso es absolutamente cierto.
