i live.. the way of singing唱法也 shows it is from the north, as well. Agatsuma is a well-known talented young shamisen player here. he married to a 民謡歌手

There are different editions of this song, but I think this one might be the most elegant one, also I am not sure if it is the best one to reflect boatmen's life on that river.

Yes, most folk songs came from hard working labors......they sang them to soothe their agony and express their desire for better life...
I was really touched by this song even the first time I heard it.

Curiously enough, an Indian friend who knew nothing of this song and spoke no Japanese guessed right off the bat that this is a boatman's song.
I think many folk songs have universal appeal, exactly because of the reason you state.
