@Th3Freak55 Not at all it's just a different sound chip from what you're used to. The Genesis emulates the late 80's arcade games as it was released in 1988, 89 stateside. It has a very wide range where as the SNES has a narrow range with more emphasis on clarity. Many people back then got a Genesis because it sounded and felt more like the arcade and that's what they wanted. All of it's arcade ports are near identical to the originals.
@Luigi84289 A different sound chip from what I'm used to? I've been playing video games since the NES days. i know bad video game music when i hear it. The SNES came out only a year after the genesis and it has a far superior sound chip. The Genesis had a unique sound and it took a lot of skill to make it sound good in games like sonic. I mean go listen to the xmen game theme on genesis or sonic spinball options music. That metallic sound is like an electric guitar scraping against a chalkboard.
@Th3Freak55 No man the Genesis was released 2 years before the supernes in Japan as well as North America. The Genesis was made to be a home arcade machine. It had a very wide range and put emphasis on the synchopated beats and percussion like arcade machines to pull you into the game. The SNES had a much narrower range but was able to reach a level of clarity the Genesis couldn't. Listen to a comparison.
@Th3Freak55 And it was not hard to code for the Genesis it was actually easier because you had a four channel programmable sound generator working in conjunction with the Yamaha 5 channel YM2612. As I stated you are not used to that type of sound. It's like calling the Konami chip made famous with TMNT turtles in time which was currently emulated for the new Castlevania Adventure bad.
@Luigi84289 It's not trolling if i'm right you idiot. I've been playing video games since before you were born so don't try to teach me about the music. Get those dicks out of your ears and maybe you will be able to hear better
@david2draw As someone else has mentioned, Super Turbo wasn't released on neither the Genesis, or the SNES. The farthest they got on those systems were Super.
Common misconception. Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo (Japan Title: Super Street Fighter 2 X - Grand Master Challenge) was never released for Genesis/SNES. The Game you're talking about is "Super Street Fighter 2 - The new Challengers". (no Turbo in the Title)
@david2draw Street Fighter II': Special Champion Edition and Super Street Fighter II were both released for the Genesis. Super Street Fighter II Turbo, however, was not. You probably just got Super mixed up with Super Turbo.
@amacfantaasy You could be thinking of Street Fighter II Turbo which was only called Turbo on the SNES because of a contract with Capcom and Nintendo. They had to call the Genesis version of that game "Special Champion Edition". On both systems though, it was Super Street Fighter II
@amacfantaasy Nope it came out for both in 1995. The Genesis version is the superior one as the Genesis was made for Arcade ports. It sounds and looks the closest to the arcade experience.
Neither the SNES nor Megadrive themes could light a candle to the arcade original, but they were still good renderings considering their hardware.
Thing to remember is that both machines produced different sounds: The Megadrive had more sharp and metallic sounds, whilst the SNES was very...trumpet and...organ. It can come down to the listener as to which was better. Personally, I say look far and wide into both game libraries and you will be pleasantly surprised.
@SamusDrake well said my friend. that comment about the snes/genny soundchips and the sounds they produced was right on the money.
too bad not enough composers were able to make use of the Mega Drive's ability to produce nice bass effects. Yuzo Koshiro showed that the Genesis was capable of doing some really great club tunes.
I'm not sure if its true, but apparently Koshiro is a DJ in night clubs. Always remember the first time I heard the boss tune from Streets of Rage 1. I wish they would play that in night clubs! O_O
For this particular game, the SNES is pretty close in quality to the arcade CPS2 (obviously different), and I like T.Hawks theme better on SNES than arcade, (percussion is better IMO).
The CPS1 based SF2 theme had the edge on the Genesis, and ESPECIALLY the Genesis BETA.
@salozmen29 The Sonic games, Comix Zone, Alisia Dragoon, Streets of Rage 1,2, & 3, Castlevania Bloodlines. There are so many games on the Genesis that have great music. So I call BS on that claim you made.
Alas this version suffered technically compared to the snes. But it played exactly the same. And it did have a few advantages. It was a lot faster than the SNES version.
sega had way better sound if you asctually listend too it, snes had good quality not gonna lie, but it depended on the game you were playing on sega, that you could determine whether their was good sound or not... need i remind yall of sonic 2 and 3?
@1MagicAndMayhem1 I thought it was Warwick castle, despite it looking much more exiting than the real one! I did play the game but alas, it's been a LONG time. My memory was off abit.
@Jutrzen seriously, the Genesis version had inferior graphics and sound, but the controls were just a little more responsive. play both versions on the original hardware and see for yourself. I'm not knocking the SNES, I just like playing the Genesis version better.
@brtshstel Especially with the 3 button controller:) Seriously ask some of the hardcore street fighter players, for example on the shoryuken website. They all say the same - the snes port was more faithful to the original as long as the gameplay (this includes controls) goes. Buf of course you have the right to your opinion.
@MrSmellybutt So everybody who bought their consoles earlier had to buy a new controller just to play a game? Just wow. Go fuck your mother - see I'm talking on your level now?
And nobody i knew had it...and my friends where sf fanatics.
IMO the snes won out on the initial SF releases.
