@mphello Well. What you have to understand is that a corporation's aim is to make money. Therefore, the bigger it gets, the less it has to or can care about individual customers. They are not evil, they just are what they are.
I love your videos, Concordance, but don't take the risk on YouTube.
I love YouTube, as much as anyone else, because of its ease of creating and deleting multiple channels, at whim, and being able to leave comments elsewhere. But, like all big corporations without a single exception, YouTube has become evil and for no reason except its selfish self makes things harder and harder for users.
It's okay for a commercial channel to advertise sex toys of every imaginable variety.
It's also okay for a channel to push tattoos and piercings all they like...
but question the merits of a religious tradition that requires a permanent body mod imposed upon a child too young to give informed consent and all hell breaks loose.
Just to get a tattoo most states have a minimum age of 16 with parental consent, but cutting a child's genitals up is an accepted exception for some reason.
I just want to say that I really hope you don't leave youtube. I can't tell you how much I've learned from your videos and I feel like you present information in such a clear and rational way that people open to civil discourse can appreciate what you've outlined even if they don't (want to) agree. If you go elsewhere, I hope you'll at least offer an RSS feed of some sort so those of us who watch your videos can get notification of new ones.
I think leaving youtube is only a truly viable strategy if you can be part of a mass exodus of good popular content.

A mass exodus to an agreed upon new hosting site is the only way. It's that or trying to improve youtube.
YT is dying its natural death. Like MySpace etc. They keep fucking with a good thing and we will all just leave. yt waste land ... freindster-like ghost town
The only scene I could think of that would violate the terms would be the one at 04:40 where a pencil drawn(?) cross section of a male shows a bit "too" much for "sensitive" viewers (but they'd have to be Super sensitive to imagery with sexual references).
I watched the video which was removed, and I don't see anything in it which would "violate community standards". I wonder what it was exactly which YT found offensive.
YouTube is a privately owned company. When you create and use a YouTube account, you are, by analogy, treading on a lawn of grass owned by someone else who has given you the privilege of doing so. If you are going to complain about YouTube taking down your videos, then you are free to create your own website wherein you can host your content, provided that it does not breach the law, a court injunction, or a court ruling.
Also, why don't you just upload all your videos to youtube and then mirror them on other sites? That way if one gets taken down, everyone can still go to the other ones. Make a vimeo channel. Why not? It only takes a few minutes to upload a copy of the video, and then if youtube is stupid you have a good backup!
I'm still reading some of the materials you commented in for me, but so far I am a staunch opponent and remain with my previous argument that all these studies cannot be put into a useful perspective. I will comment/mail you again as soon as I have the time to read through a few more papers.
Anyway my point is, I too am very upset about the video's removal, it makes absolutely no sense to me.
When a video like this is taken down, does TY notify you? Do they forward any complaints to you so that you can at least see what people complained about, and who complained? I think this is something YT should be looking more closely at. Anyone who complains must do so with their real name attached, and the complaint should be published on YT. If after some time the issue is not resolved between the author and critic, YT can get directly involved, possibly for a small fee, to discourage idiots.
Not always. I've had and am aware of others who have had videos simply "disappear" without explanation or ability to appeal.
YT seems more interested in superficial improvements (?) to the display interface than fixing problems in the back end that systems like phpBB had worked out years ago.
If they had a desire to retain their user content model, it seems to me that they would be making obvious efforts toward addressing these issues.
@DeathofSpeech -- Sad, but then again I guess YT (not TY, sorry) doesn't see itself as a channel-hosting service, because if it did it would do more to help make them work. Granted, the staffing required to manage this properly would be massive, but much of it could be automated, if nothing else, notifying the author that his/her video has been pulled. I see a market for a site that will host and support channels. YT could then be used to notify then link people to that site.
@DeathofSpeech I wonder if us users could force the issue by complaining about videos uploaded by broadcasters, claiming that they violate terms of service, etc. It would be interesting to see what happens if CNN or Disney or any o the other big shops start complaining about anonymous complaints and their videos being pulled without notice.
@DeathofSpeech -- I guess you are right. I haven't seen much effort put into YT in a while, except for the new look, which is nothing of substance. It's a shame too, because once you have the lead in something and you are not chasing the competition, you have room to innovate.
I just heard on the news that Google has just unveiled something called Google TV. Google obviously has bigger projects to look after.
I think it is odd that YouTube will show videos of a circumcision being performed or a joking video about it but take your video down. Yours was merely a statistical analysis on the alleged health benefits of the procedure. It didn't really show anything at all. Makes no sense to me.
Dude, make a parallel channel on vimeo and post all videos there as well. That way it will be a lot less hassle to make the switch if youtube starts closing more of your videos.
If you haven't already you might find it helpful to watch some of Happycabbies videos on flagging. There is one where he found out how YT deal with these and it does explain the inconsistencies and mistakes. /user/HappyCabbie/search?query=flag
If you didn't try and monetize it I think you should definitely try and get it put back up and if they don't to ask why as it does seem ok (don't get all dramatic and start accusing them of being anti science or anything like that).
I don't find HappyCabbie's input on the subject to be entirely helpful any more. He's been caught in several deliberate misrepresentations since he signed on with Google and appears to be simply parroting whatever he's told to say. There is measurably inconsistent with reality in several cases. He no longer has respect for demonstrable evidence in issues of false flagging or fraudulent DMCA, and I fear that he may be under financial pressure to conform his opinions.
@DeathofSpeech Well his description of how videos are screened makes a lot of sense and seems realistic. They get a printout of screenshots of the video and the channel description which they glance at and don't really have time to watch everyone all the way through. They make a quick judgement and go onto the next one. As far as I am aware there is a way of challenging the decision and I am sure I have heard of someone succeeding which leads me to believe Concordance should try.
@DeathofSpeech I agree that YouTube would help itself and everyone else by stating exactly what is wrong and the timestamp so you have the option to challenge with more information and if necessary remove/censor that section so the video can stay up (ideally in their editor so you don't have to re-upload). It would also help the intelligent users learn what they are doing 'wrong'.
Many people have been pointing out the problems with their flagging system being sometimes used as a salve for butthurt over well deserved critique, and sometimes outright abused by people possessed of autocratic ideologies to censor.
Youtube has overall failed to do more than express a need to be more vigilant without addressing the underlying issue.
Recent developments suggests YT is deliberately abandoning the original user content model for a commercial Hulu model
@DeathofSpeech As to false flags, most flags aren't truly false in the fact a lot of people create videos violating the site's T&Cs (or at least the ones I have seen are), what is false the person's motivation for flagging (usually its because they don't agree with the video). It's frustrating seeing people setting themselves up to be flag'd by including stuff they know will make them vulnerable, its like they want it to happen. I don't see that this time. Lets hope he challenges.
Certainly not all flagging is false, but YT makes a representation that videos are NEVER removed without prior review and that is obviously not the case.
CarlCartman's communion wafer video certainly doesn't qualify as scam/spam but moreover wasn't in any way a violation of TOS and neither was TheLivingDinosaur's contribution to the 15 Questions Colab.
Some people do set themselves up, and no distinction is made between those who do and those who don't.
@DeathofSpeech I haven't seen those two (or they weren't that memorable) so I couldn't comment. I am not defending youtube by the way just applying my observations so far, any information that seems to fit and hoping that all this stops so I can watch interesting videos made by people I am subscribed to!
Understood... my comment wasn't meant to suggest that you were.
I was only expressing that HC has recently been given to statements that appear to be YT policy apologetics more than helpful and evidence based efforts.
In the case of TheLivingDinosaur the video was so obviously the victim of a flagging bot that they reinstated it. In CarlCartman's case however his appeal was ignored.
In neither case were the videos reviewed prior to removal.
Ok, I guess it was flagged. Have you tried protesting it? They might bring it back up? It might be the Jewish thing (that's the most controversial thing in there, maybe someone didn't listen carefully to what you said and leapt to conclusions). Unless you tried to monetize it without having releases for all the artwork proving it is yours to use commercially (that would certainly get it taken down)? Probably worth going through the process before causing a lot of drama.
As you said, confidence is an enemy of science and vice versa. It appears that lack of it is an enemy of youtube. People's belief is often not based on how accurate the information is, but how strongly a person believes it. In my opinion this stems from our ancient times, when we started to be sociable and no one had yet had the intelligence to lie. Then, the importance of information correlated with the strength of expression. We're not well adapted to live in the Information Era.
Youtube allows so many things that would clearly seem to be against 'community standards', in the name of things like sexual gratification, but a serious video on circumcision is seen by them as too risqué?
Youtube is really going into the intellectual gutter, all while pushing aside the average users in favor of the almighty buck
I would hate to have to go to another site to view your content, but you are definitely one of, if not my favorite channels to watch. I would 100% follow you whatever site you go to, so make sure to let us know!
wherever you go I'll follow. I appreciate the time you take to make your videos and the learning I receive from them has broadened my understanding of various topics
I have just watched the video and could see no problem with it at all. I was expecting to see something that some people may have found graphical but there is nothing that I can see that would offend anybody!
religion has no place in today's world, it is part of the bronze age, along with dinosaurs, voodoo dolls, flat earth, puff the magic dragon,Santa clause, peter rabbit, but free means free, the atheist, Jew, negro, Latino, polish, Chinese, japan, etc, bashing will not tolerated, if you are a real person you most know when they are doing wrong, so what the hell, grow up, get together, stop this none sense now, by getting to getter on the net exchange Ideas, be productive Now
I also have been involved with computers form the first 4 byte MIT computer you wire your self.I know computers & networks I want to band together all the free thinkers to create youtube like environment like wiki & wiki leaks,we need to make free & moral truth first priority with out censorship, but child pornography is a problem, & although I am an atheist religion & gay rights has to be tolerated,we have to keep things by real science, suto science will be allowed but will have to be rated BS
I hear that there is a bill to sensor the internet, I am annoyed to hear your content was taken down, I enjoy greatly what you do, I get a feeling of trust from you, and that you are sincere in the topics you choose are for the benefit of mankind, I have a 7th grade education but l can design, build, repair most structures & equipment, I am not stupid by far self educated, I got to this point from people like you, I would like to create an alternative to youtube like linus to MS, free thinking
Please don't leave youtube. If you leave, you will only be reaching a small fraction of the audience that you would by staying. Even if youtube stymies the odd video, it's not worth sacrificing your viewership; you will do less good. Please don't sacrifice effectiveness for purity (not the right word, but you get the idea).
YouTube has its head up its collective ass. It takes down legit, informative, debate vids while doing nothing about mind rotting crap like the Fred channel and Shaytards. Oh wait, they are doing something about those type of channels...promoting them.
@PlanetJeroen - I second that. If C0nc0rdance finds a new platform, I'll definately be trying to atain a membership there.
He is by far my favourite youtuber, and I'd rather split my time between two media sites, and possibly rarely see this one (youtube), than never be able to watch another C0nc0rdance video.
I saw nothing wrong with the video. Strange. Of course, things like condom use is FAR more effective than hacking genitals in ending things like AIDS transmission... But, I saw nothing inherently wrong with it. Great information.
I tried mirroring your video and got immediately rejected. I don't know what kind of program is being used to monitor your content C0nc0rdance, but it is infuriating. I already mentioned that you have several peoples support, but I think it's important to stay calm and not get angry at the robot that controls the video monitoring and try to find a human solution to this problem. I'm sure there is one.
Critical thinking skills don't need to be taught. It develops naturally unless you're indoctrinated into a religion in which case all of your thoughts, values, morals and ideals are handed to you on a platter like a baby.
@PompousPreacher actually they do, children don't necessarily develop them and as a result believe in anything they hear, and while some critical thinking may develop it's best to ensure everyone gets taught all of them.
It wasnt rejected by youtube, but by fanatics of this issue. Ive seen how nearly religious they can be. Its insanity to destroy and block videos over a fukn flap of skin.
You are awesome concordance, I've watched many of your videos; but when people don't like what you have to say one way or the other; they will try and find a way, any way, to take your videos down. This usually involves false DMCA, though I've also known companies and users to comb through videos to try to find even a very small fragment of anything that could possibly qualify as copyrighted. Just look at Time Warner taking down a home video of a baby with a song playing softly in the background
@donald1w12 I believe YT checks the video against a database of banned material. (that's what I would do). Rename it, add a few seconds to it in any video editing software so it cannot be identified by a simple checksum.
... also, don't post it on a channel you actively use and like.
Downloaed the vid to mirror it and after upload it was shown as: Rejected (terms of use violation) Looks like they realyl don't like this vid. I wodner which terms of use I violated.
Do you earn revenue from Youtube? If the video was taken down for reasons not described by the user agreement, you could threaten legal action on the lost revenue.
@CommitToFocus Not a great argument as he would have to prove he has the right to use content from the website and all the pictures for commercial purposes. They are a lot stricter on videos which are monetized.
Sadly, I believe we may be witnessing the beginning of the end for YouTube. For it seems the people in charge have forgotten what is that makes YouTube so popular. I think I can speak for most of you viewers in stating we will continue to follow you if /when you decide to go else where. Thanks for all you do!
@warbread - problem is the people who get on here and want it to be g rated, everytihng must be in there little bubble of reality, "oh circumcision, that ives the pee pee, thats not something i want my kids to watch so its inapropriate", we all know the type. One of the people at my work actually think the internet should be censored, and prevent anyone going to anything thats not G rated, everything else, more or less 99.9% of the net should be blicked according to her...
excuse my ignorance if i am wrong, but isnt this a somewhat similar case to the potholer54/amenikin debacle?
by arbitrarily ruling on the appropriateness of your videos, are they not then wavering any 'safe harbour' status they have called on in previous legal proceedings?
DAMN.. I'm currently smoking electric cigarettes.. I would LOVE to hear ANYTHING you have to say about them!! PLEASE make that one soon.. I've been told by some that they are WORSE for me than Marlboro but I feel better smoking these... now I REALLY want to ANY info you have or any opinions you have on the subject!
i know what you should do concordance: audio for " pale blue dot" and " demon haunted world".
pale blue dot was only half carl, and the demon haunted world was somebody else entirely. i would much rather listen to you recite those lines than the guys that they used. do it.
I look extremely forward to a video on electronic cigarettes, as I've completely switched from traditional tabacco ones and hope that I'm not putting even worse shit in my body... Either way, I want to know.
I remember watching the video when it was first uploaded. I didn't see a problem with it then, and I don't see a problem with it now. Do you know why it was taken down? Was it flagged? If so, I don't see any reason why a flag would be taken seriously on it's content. Anyway, I hope that maybe you can get it reinstated if you decide to try. I don't even know if that's something you can try to do. But anyway, don't leave YouTube, we'll miss you.
@C0nc0rdance The reason YT is as good as it is now is because people like you fight injustice when something like this happens. potholer54, Thunderf00t, AronRa, Dprjones have all fought against this kind of nonsense, so don't give up.You have our support. But you have their support too.
Youtube will lose more and more people. Content producers are growing tired of youtube indescriminently deleting videos, and consumers are growing tired of the videos they liked silently dissapearing.
Well, if SOPA passas in america the world is screwed anyway. Will be looking forward to your global physical mail network in the future c0nc0rdance.
I really hope your not leaving YouTube. You make so created videos, your calm voice with clear pronunciation make it so easy to follow your topic despite I in meany cases could be completely new to the topic. You have showed me some new very interesting thing like the "Genetic Bucket Chain" & "Cell Phones Cause Cancer?" Things I kind of just believed because media told you so
What ever your decision is, let us all know where your keep posting your videos. Because I will surely follow you there.
I have seen your Circumcision video and I do not see how it violates Youtube community standards. I do hope that your video comes back on youtube. I consider this wrongful take down unacceptable.
Bullsh*t! I watched that video as well as several of the literally dozens of others on the same topic. Why are all the others still here? My guess is because the Trolls who bombarded yours with bogus flags haven't had the inclination to direct their hatred towards them. Regardless of where you post, I will continue to follow you.
USA is a sick country. You would have done it in another country and wouldn't have encounter any problem. Well, they are other sick countries but you know what I mean. Your stuff is very valuable. I appreciate.
Teenage girls shaking their asses dont tend to question deeply held personal convictions and long standing traditions. I very much doubt that the video was removed because YT recieved a large number of complaints. More likely it was automatically removed because they recieved one complaint and no one has checked yet to see if was valid or not. Keep up the good work CC
Just another form of censorship. (And don't give me the "private entities can do what they want" bull; private censorship is as bad as, if not worse than, government censorship.)
Subbed to the C0nc0rdanceAnswers's channel. (That was a subtle way of introducing it to us, right?) I am curious, though, c0nc0rdance, when will you start "accepting questions" on that channel to answer?
You can start submitting questions right away (go to C0nc0rdanceAnswers channel page and put something in the "Ask Your Audience Section").
Probably by the end of next week I'll post my first "Answers" video, and I'll continue to make it a weekly event. One question per week will be answered, but I'll keep a running "Questions File". Topic should be something related to biology or medical science if you want an intelligent answer.
Your video was very educational. Some people were assholes in the comments, and it is a controversial topic. But the video itself was very dry (a good thing).
What is really messed up is videos like Rick Perry's with how ever many thousands of dislikes and has been reported just as many times for hate speech remains up. We have videos of half nude and nude women on youtube but an academic discussion about a medical procedure is somehow unfit? Bullshit.
Your circumcision videos were among the best (i.e. most balanced and least "made-from-the-gut") videos regarding that topic, I've ever seen. Removing that kind of content shows how deep Youtube has fallen.
I'll follow wherever you go, but I'd really love to see the one on antidepressants up'd on the Tube. I know someone whose health problems were ALL solved once they started taking a benzodiazepene, but who then started experiencing all sorts of new and nasty side effects when they were forced to switch to an SSRI. Don't let the losers win, keep uploading here!
a video about electronic cigarettes? that would be awesome.
My current opinion is that if people really manage to switch to electronic cigarettes completely, its a good thing, less expensive and less unhealthy. But if you smoke sometimes and fume sometimes, there are problems, because the nicotine dose these electronic cigarettes can deliver is extreme, if you do both and then stop fuming, you will smoke normal cigarettes in crazy amounts.
I would fight it, petition youtube and such. If you were forced to move onto another medium, there's nothing to say that THAT medium would also eventually get the same problems. Better I think to take a stand against unfair standards. I was going to say "censorship" but I wonder if this was a false flagging campaign or simply a random Youtube employee reporting it when they happened across it.
you used the word pornography, hence ur vid removed.
its funny how on this issue american studies show positive effects but the danish swedish finnish and dutch vids show no positive sideeffects and even
a negative correlation, of course u dont speak the languages so i cant blame u for not using their studies. sorry for not providing sources.
i wonder though, if you think female circumcision should be treated in the same way?
It absolutely calls into question the value of making quality content if it can be arbitrarily taken down without notice. Youtube has harmed itself again in my eyes. If you ever do move, please please leave a forwarding address.
First off, find out why it was taken down. More likely than not it was falsely flagged by an anti/pro circumcision person who felt you did not support thier side well enough and thus your video needed to be removed.
I know this will make me the stick in the mud. I moved over to Vimeo a while back because of one of the earlier debacles with YouTube. I don't regret and will not upload any more original content to YouTube. Please consider moving off of YouTube.
This is usual, one of my suscriptions has a constant battle against youtube over this, but he often wins and his videos are back up after a while, keep up the good fight.
Please, please, please, don't stop posting your videos on Youtube.
My smartphone doesn't play videos from other sources, and I have no access to a computer.
The videos you're going to make sound very interesting, and I'd hate to miss out on them.
Censorship sucks, I'm sorry you put the work into doing a serious video only to have it rejected. I can believe they'd consider one of your videos unacceptable considering the stuff they do allow. Can't you post the videos on 2 places?
WHAT!? There are tons of videos of porn and racism and violence on YouTube...but they delete a scientific discussion of an important health topic.
It irks me that YouTube would never delete a video like this if it discussed women's health, but show a diagram of a phallus and it's offensive. For some reason, men aren't expected to talk frankly about their bodies. Many thanks to YouTube for helping perpetuate that harmful attitude.
Censoring this video violates community standards.
@Conc0rdance If you do decide to move to another forum, make sure you notify us! I've followed many people who moved away from YouTube and they've still had great success. Sometimes the hassle of bureaucracy simply isn't worth it.
As a suggestion, for your first few videos away from YouTube, post short 'commercials' to advertise the video posted on the other site. That way, your subscribers have a chance to move over to your new channel and you can still maintain your account.
@0110mkultra00111 Yeah, I found that out by now. Though mirer951 did manage to mirror the video, by changing some little things in the beginning and end. It's here: watch?v=7olbZ2Ohv40

I think that if attempting to communicate with YT was going to work it would have worked by now.
They seem to have a well considered play to change from user content to commercial content.
Commercial content is more profitable and doesn't require the same moderation.
So far as I can see, the answer is to make arrangements using an alternative service and leave YT to its ambition of becoming a commercial media site.
DeathofSpeech 1 month ago

If you didn't try and monetize it I think you should definitely try and get it put back up and if they don't to ask why as it does seem ok (don't get all dramatic and start accusing them of being anti science or anything like that).
nephthysuk 1 month ago
@nephthysuk
DeathofSpeech 1 month ago
@DeathofSpeech Well his description of how videos are screened makes a lot of sense and seems realistic. They get a printout of screenshots of the video and the channel description which they glance at and don't really have time to watch everyone all the way through. They make a quick judgement and go onto the next one. As far as I am aware there is a way of challenging the decision and I am sure I have heard of someone succeeding which leads me to believe Concordance should try.
nephthysuk 1 month ago
@nephthysuk
"Well his description of how videos are screened makes a lot of sense and seems realistic"
And it is falsifiable...
That a video can be reinstated for some types of flagging isn't the issue.
People challenge flagging often. Sometimes they are ignored and sometimes not.
When they aren't if the flag is upheld, no reason is given for exactly way... what specifically violates ToS.
DeathofSpeech 1 month ago
@DeathofSpeech I agree that YouTube would help itself and everyone else by stating exactly what is wrong and the timestamp so you have the option to challenge with more information and if necessary remove/censor that section so the video can stay up (ideally in their editor so you don't have to re-upload). It would also help the intelligent users learn what they are doing 'wrong'.
nephthysuk 1 month ago
@nephthysuk
DeathofSpeech 1 month ago
@DeathofSpeech As to false flags, most flags aren't truly false in the fact a lot of people create videos violating the site's T&Cs (or at least the ones I have seen are), what is false the person's motivation for flagging (usually its because they don't agree with the video). It's frustrating seeing people setting themselves up to be flag'd by including stuff they know will make them vulnerable, its like they want it to happen. I don't see that this time. Lets hope he challenges.
nephthysuk 1 month ago
@nephthysuk
DeathofSpeech 1 month ago
@DeathofSpeech I haven't seen those two (or they weren't that memorable) so I couldn't comment. I am not defending youtube by the way just applying my observations so far, any information that seems to fit and hoping that all this stops so I can watch interesting videos made by people I am subscribed to!
nephthysuk 1 month ago
@nephthysuk
DeathofSpeech 1 month ago
Ok, I guess it was flagged. Have you tried protesting it? They might bring it back up? It might be the Jewish thing (that's the most controversial thing in there, maybe someone didn't listen carefully to what you said and leapt to conclusions). Unless you tried to monetize it without having releases for all the artwork proving it is yours to use commercially (that would certainly get it taken down)? Probably worth going through the process before causing a lot of drama.
nephthysuk 1 month ago
As you said, confidence is an enemy of science and vice versa. It appears that lack of it is an enemy of youtube. People's belief is often not based on how accurate the information is, but how strongly a person believes it. In my opinion this stems from our ancient times, when we started to be sociable and no one had yet had the intelligence to lie. Then, the importance of information correlated with the strength of expression. We're not well adapted to live in the Information Era.

You are awesome concordance, I've watched many of your videos; but when people don't like what you have to say one way or the other; they will try and find a way, any way, to take your videos down.

It irks me that YouTube would never delete a video like this if it discussed women's health, but show a diagram of a phallus and it's offensive. For some reason, men aren't expected to talk frankly about their bodies. Many thanks to YouTube for helping perpetuate that harmful attitude.
