There are so many ways the scene could go at :54, after the old man realizes what he's seeing. But rather than do something that advances the plot, the soundtrack cuts out and we get the eerily beautiful tableau of the mother--her body unnaturally lit for our benefit, her hair gently swaying along with the seaweed reaching out to her like great tentacles from the abyss. The old man sees only horror; we see beauty.
