i love these old bbc historical miniseries. this one, elizabeth r, the one about king edward [ victorias son. i think it was called edward the king? i saw it on netflix ] edward and mrs simpson. a lot of time has passed since these old shows were made and more facts may have come to light on some of these people but the shows are still great and keep you hooked.
And nothing changed in over 400 years. Her Royal Highness Diana Princess of Wales was another victim of family politics, royal intrigue, deception and the continued acceptance that a prince can have a mistress and lie before god while his wife should say nothing. Shame on the British especially all women for accepting the Whore Parker Bowles.
All blame should be put on the Howard men- all they cared about was power, and they used their women as a means to that end; but if anything went wrong, then they would throw the poor girl under the bus, and use another innocent to do their dirty work-(not that Catherine was all that innocent) but if the truth had been told before any marriage had taken place, then things would have been very different, and there would have been one less life lost. Poor girl.
i just watched this after renting it from netflix. this was a great episode with angela pleasance. in fact its probably the best work shes ever done, ive not see her in anything else that was up to par with her performance in this BBC production. i find her attractive in that odd kind of way. her whole explanation about the young man and how they made love and he wept when he saw her naked, i gotta admit it turned me on a bit lol. she looks like she would have bee fun to "play" with.
@ligreekguy Technically, Historians cannot agree on her birth date, and, with all the different dates, she could have been between 14 and 19 when she married Henry
True, but I find it odd that someone of noble rank would not have had their birthdate more accurately recorded. The same went for Anne Boleyn, Jane Seymour and Catherine Parr, though at least Seymour and Parr's years have been narrowed down. Not so for Boleyn and Howard, and they were ranked higher than Seymour and Parr! As lecherous as he was, would Henry have stooped so low as to marry a 14 or 15 year old? Antonia Fraser uses some sort of evidence to pin the date at 1521.
@ligreekguy apparently though anne boleyn was born a simple knights daughter and so she wasnt of very powerful rank at the time, but when she did become queen i agree that they should have recorded it
Obviously, her parents knew when she was born, yet no attempt was made to record the date even after they all rose in power. Interestingly, Catherine Parr's exact date has been narrowed down to November 11, 1512, meaning that she was 30 when she married Henry (July 11, 1543) and 35 when she died (September 5, 1548). 1512 was always the known year, but evidently her month and day have also been learned.
Anne was probably born in 1501 rather than 1507 due to the fact that if she had been born in the latter year, she would have been too young to serve as a lady in waiting at the French court (in the late 1510s). She was present when Henry met Francis at the Field of the Cloth of Gold in 1519, as part of the French entourage, and being 18 at that time makes much more sense than being 12. This means that she was 32 when she married Henry, old by the standards of that time.
@ligreekguy Henry was the King of England. He could have "stooped" to whatever he wanted to just about. I mean, he divorced 2, beheaded 2, would marrying a 14 or 15 yr old, been too far out? Plus, back then even women of royal or higher born weren''t viewed as they are today. The crap he pulled was done in the 1500's and they still thought the king was God's appointed agent on earth.
True, but Antonia Fraser as well as a few other historians with even greater scholarly background agree on 1521 as the birth year of Catherine Howard. This would have made her nineteen at the time of her marriage to Henry. Remember, the purpose (allegedly) of the three marriages after Jane Seymour was to provide a cushion in the succession by getting another son. Marrying a girl at fifteen or sixteen, though certainly not impossible in terms of pregnancy, would have been too much.
@fsmorel123: Not true, you ignorant fool. She was only 17 or 18 when she met the King. If you really think that's "old", then you're an ignorant jackass.
@nightofcrimson13 calm the hell down weirdo, i was referencing king henry and wrote "she" instead of "he".. jeez give me a break! have you never made a typo?

Angela Pleasence was 29 when she appeared in this series, ten years older than the real Catherine was when she married Henry.
