How to Play the Banjo : Standard G Banjo Tuning

I tune my banjo by ear, listening to the notes that the strings play in order to know whether or not they're right. Recently went up from G to A (no capo or hook needed), and it works, though the drone string is on its way out in the peg department.

Is this a standard Banjo? I see that there are different kinds, what is the typical banjo? I'm trying to buy one but i'm a little hesitant because i want to buy the right one....thanks. (anyone; feel free to answer.)
