The easiest way to kill any troll is by using fire. The jarl of whiterun gave me a Axe of fire and i used that i think. I mostly used the fire magic and fireball scroll but barely nicked him with the blast. But fire in both hands should do the trick. It says in the game that trolls regenerate and to use fire to effectively kill them.

You have to go to Iverstead. The quest sends you there because the only way up to High Horthgar is via the 7,000 steps.

You can set your destination by toggling the quest as active and if you are lost you use clairvoyance and it will show you the path. :) Instead of running around lost.
