I love how they try to run down the Star Trek movies' effects compared to Star Wars when both were done for the most part by ILM. Star Trek V really suffered due to the fact that they got some guy who did commercials.
If you ever want to introduce a non-fan to Star Trek, THIS is the movie to do it. I think it's an extremely hard tightrope to walk, appealing to those who watched the series and those who've maybe only seen a few episodes or none at all. And as the writers have said, what is at stake in this movie is "Star Trek" : Creating warp drive, encountering alien life, humanity improving for the better, etc.
I remember reading Eberts Sun Times review when the movie was released and could tell he really enjoyed it. I enjoyed reading it and didnt come across a video review until today. Thanks for sharing! Ive made several First Contact clips for my channel. Please check it out and leave feedback.
Star Trek 2009 could learn a lot from this movie. It combined great special effects and action scenes that appeal to the casual fans with a great story and strong character development that will appeal to the hardcore Star Trek fans.
@KabutoHunter Star Trek '09 is still Trek. It's just one of the stories that was not about ideas, of which Trek has had plenty. MOST episodes were about ideas...but not all.
As far as I'm concerned, the Borg are the most horrifying villain they ever came up with in Star Trek, prob worse than Palpatine in Star Wars. I wish they had talked about that. The first time I saw that Borg cube, I was like fuck that - don't want to live there.
@TheRealCritique People never talk about how Star Trek has made the Borg the most malevolent enemy universal to all life in the galaxy. I rather face 20 Darth Vaders than the Borg. At least I might be able to talk Vader into sparing my life and teaching me the art of lightsabering. If not, just get sliced by a lightsaber and not get assimilated and be a slave to the queen.
@FartyFace - *zing* -- the Red Letter Media guys that made those TNG reviews, complete with pizza roll gags, rock. The TNG flicks I could never take seriously, and it's amazing S&E manage to.
I always laugh when these guys comment on the special effects of these films not being as great as ILM when, in fact, ILM has done effects for 7 of the 11 Star Trek films.
Aside from the Picard eyeball zoom-out scene, just about all the special FX for this movie were done by ILM.
The motion control technology ILM and Lucas developed for Star Wars saw use in Star Trek II for smooth, realistic starship photography, as well as all the subsequent movies and TV shows (not Enterprise, that was CGI).
@amusedmaj I think its also bc they didn't spend as much as Lucas would have, and in 1996, I remember everybody thinking 'how great' the new CGI was. Which this film didn't too heavily rely on.
Looking back at it now, I think it holds up MUCH better then the CGI laden stuff they had then.
@amusedmaj I think they were mostly thinking of Star Trek V; not that the script or the acting was much better in that Shatner-helmed train wreck of a travesty.
@amusedmaj To be fair though, whenever a Trek film doesn't hire ILM, the Trek film seems to suck for some reason. 5, 9, and 10 were just out and out bad; 1 was created before ILM, so I might give that film a pass :)
You read my comment wrong. I said that ST: FC is the best TNG film...ie: The best film from The Next Generation, not overall. I think FC, STII: The Wrath of Khan and Star Trek (JJ Abrams) have equal footing
@Bartman954 Actually, I have always felt that the TNG films were always lacking. To me First Contact is nothing more than a remake of The Best of Both Worlds, and I found the ending to be especially disappointing. I loved the TNG show, but I was never that excited in any of the four TNG features so far.
@Bartman954 And I feel that all of the TNG films were highly overrated. Especially First Contact. I found FC's ending to be completely ridiculous in that Data kills all the borg by destroying the plasma coolants in Engineering despite them taken over half of the ship. That was one of the biggest cop out endings of any movie I have ever seen. They should have destroyed the Enterprise E.
Frakes hasn't done anything good since this & Insurrection. He did awful kiddie movies like The Librarian, Clockstoppers & Thunderbirds!!!!
Also, you claim STAR TREK is unoriginal when AVATAR ripped off lots of other classic movies as well (DANCES WITH WOLVES, JURASSIC PARK, ALIENS) so James Cameron loses points as well!
@willhunting1995. "Oh. Hello. My name is willhunting. I'm a twoll out looking fow game. So be vewy vewy quiet, I'm hunting suckews who get mad. Hu hu hu hu."
@BondFreek Oh, lookey here, It's BondFreek pissed off since the TNG films have ended thanks to the shittiness of Insurrection and Nemesis. Go cry me a river, Troll bait!
@willhunting1995 - You've gotta be kidding. Abrams' Trek is all production design and white-noise. I liked it in the theatre, but on DVD I actually turned it off. The action never slows for a single second to have a character scene of any depth. The film isn't ABOUT anything. If you like Trek and you like what these films HAVE been, then you wouldn't call a lot of noise and special effects "the best Trek" just because it's the newest. Kahn, Undiscovered, First Contact are much better.
@scottishthunder47 Actually, I'm not kidding at all, At least Abram's Trek had a lot of excitement, whereas, First Contact felt like a remake of Best of Both Worlds combined with a very weak subplot about a drunken Zephram Cochran. I really disliked the weak ending where Data destroys all the borg by destroying the plasma coolants, and despite the borg taking over half of the ship. To say that First Contact's ending was a major letdown is an understatement.
@willhunting1995 At least First Contact doesn't have Tyler Fucking Perry in it. Barf.
Abrams' Star Trek was alright in my opinion, but points in the plot were fucking insulting, like how they explained xenolinguistics and the alternate reality. You know why they do that? Because they think you're too dumb to get it.
@Firebert No, it's got Alfre FUCKING Woodard in it, easily one of the most annoying actresses out there (Who always shouts out her lines because she really can't act!) Oh, and don't forget that Abrams Trek also has Eric Bana in it, who could easily kick James Cromwell's ass to the curb! As for insulting plot points, First Contact is easily full of them (Data destroying the plasma coolants killing all of the borg who have taken over half the ship?!) PLEASE....................
@willhunting1995 You're confusing a plot hole with being insulting. Star Trek has plenty of plot holes in it too, if you can't see them then you're an idiot.
No one is as bad as Tyler Perry. No one. Eric Bana is pretty bad too though.
@Firebert True Star Trek has plot holes in it, but nowhere near as gaping as FIrst Contact did. And if anyone is as bad as Tyler Perry it's Alfre FUCKING Woodard! And Eric Bana is a badass!
@willhunting1995 "Oh. Hello. My name is willhunting. I'm a twoll out looking fow game. So be vewy vewy quiet, I'm hunting suckews who get mad. Hu hu hu hu."
@BondFreek Let's see Picard still in command after going completely nuts (Crusher should have immediately removed him of command) The ending, which is full of plot holes, how Data apparently "missed" the Phoenix, etc.
@willhunting1995. Did Crusher see him go "nuts"? No. Did she have a medical exam for proof that Picard had lost it? No. So why would she? Data missed the Phoenix deliberately. Were you not watching? Remember Data was only playing along to gain the Borg Queens confidence. It's all in the movie. But maybe you like movies to spell everything out for you.
@BondFreek Yes, Crusher DID see Picard go nuts when he berated Worf and told him to leave the bridge. She should have immediately removed him from command!
@willhunting1995. Sorry wrong again. Captains have a right to berate anyone they want. It is not grounds for relieving some one of command. When working closely with people tempers some times get out of control. It is not a sign of "going nuts". PS Grow up! Jr. High insults should stay in Jr. High.
@BondFreek And they get court martialed when they do dipshit. You obviously have no fucking clue what you are talking about, especially since your mother must have dropped you on your head as an infant.
@scottishthunder47 And yet, Abrams Trek is the highest grossing film of the franchise, the first Oscar winner of the series, and easily the best critically acclaimed film of the series. First Contact was simply a redo of Best of Both Worlds on a bigger scale.
@willhunting1995 "Abrams Trek is the highest grossing film of the franchise" Sorry but you are wrong again. Star Trek IV still holds the record. Get your facts strait before you write.
@BondFreek Try again, dude, TVH made about $106 million at the box office, and First Contact made $91 million at the U.S. box office. Star Trek 2009 made well over $250 million in North America alone. Get your facts correct next time, buffoon!
@willhunting1995. First of all, what is TVH? Second, did you compensate for the increase in cost of living? No, I did not think so. Finally, Star Trek IV is not First Contact it is The Voyage Home and it took in over $260 million back in 1986. Compensate for today's cost of living it tallies up to $300 million of today's dollars. Get YOUR facts strait paramecium brain. (Including grammar)
@willhunting1995 - You've gotta be kidding. Abrams' Trek is all production design and white-noise. I liked it in the theatre, but on DVD I actually turned it off. The action never slows for a single second to have a character scene of any depth. The film isn't ABOUT anything. Kahn, Undiscovered, First Contact are much better.
@scottishthunder47 I feel the same way about First Contact as you do about Trek 2009, I felt it was all gloss, bad script writing and an especially lousy ending.
@BondFreek Think again, First Contact is easily the most OVERRATED Trek film of all time. No wonder Insurrection and Nemesis both killed the TNG film franchise forever. Frakes isn't much of a director either.
@BondFreek You have got to be smoking crack. Frake's direction is completely awful. No wonder all he has directed other than Trek is awful kiddie films. First Contact absolutely SUCKED ASS!
@willhunting1995 "Oh. Hello. My name is willhunting. I'm a twoll out looking fow game. So be vewy vewy quiet, I'm hunting suckews who get mad. Hu hu hu hu."
@willhunting1995. Who is crying? From what I'm seeing it looks like it is you who is crying. Why is that? Maybe it is the fact that you can't stand the fact that someone does not like what you like. And that that someone has proven you wrong time and again. You are a sad little man.
@willhunting1995. There is a picture, you with a fat balding 80 year old woman. Don't get me wrong, I love my mother but such an insult just grosses me out, instead of making me angry. YYYYUUUUCK! ewe!
@danxtur Confused Matthews' negative reviews also includes Star Trek 09. Redlettermedia is also unreliable. However Confused Matthews he is wrong about First Contact. People like him count rocks when watching westerns. I look at plot and plot points. It does not matter if the ship has 32 decks or 40 decks. Those are film errors not plot holes. All movies have film errors, good movies don't have plot holes.
@danxtur Errors are there because of budget; it costs money to re-shoot. The Borg were hundreds of miles from earth. what you want them to be thousands? The Borg's small escape ship maybe round but it is not the Death Star. The Star Wars prequels were good movies. They remained consistent to the universe Lucas invented and the plots were solid. Even good movies can be hated (see public reviews of Citizen Cane). Confused Matthew is not a professional. What is wrong WITH YOU?
@BondFreek You know what? You really don't know what quality and logic in film works. But that is ok, Hollywood needs people like you to "like" every single crap they make. Matthew is not about just plots and I am very solidly sure that you are really mistaken on what he reviews and how he reviews it.
Quality and personal opinion are to different things, but hey why should I keep talking to a person from the public that has really no clue what good or bad film is. What a waist!
@danxtur I have watched Confused Matthew many times. He made good points about the Lion King and Star Trek (09). I know what he does. You are right that quality and personal opinion are to different things, there is no but. However, the problem with some people is that they confuse quality for personal taste. First Contact is a well developed movie; it has good story, great acting, NO plot-holes, and amazing camera angles. It's OK to hate good movies. That is your rite.
@danxtur. Then why are you knocking it? This movie is a must see for any Sci-fi fan. Trust me, It will entertain you and make you think. The characters are complex and the humor is spot on. It is my policy not to watch a movie more then 2 times in the theater no mater how good. Star Trek First Contact is one of the few movies I saw 5 times in the theater. You don’t need to be a Trek fan to understand this film and enjoy it.
@BondFreek This "film" those not interest me and for the other I trust Redlettermedia and Matthew, because I am a studing film I take time watching films that a more import to learn from. As I say again you need the: What, the how and why.
So I really have to ask you; what makes a film bad for in your judgement?
@danxtur. If you are studding film then you know the motto all good critics say. "Don't take my word for it. See it your self." A critic’s job is not to tell people what to watch, it is to give an educated opinion. Roger Ebert is an expert on film. Listen to what he says about why he likes a film. He will never say a plot is good when it is not. Star Trek First Contact does have the what, the How, and the Why. If a Movie has any element from "Plan 9 From Outer Space" then it is a bad film.
@BondFreek Dude, I don't watch this critic because he those not have the same taste as me. He even called "Knowing" one of the best films he has ever seen.
Yeah, you are right that you should never judge a film before seeing it. but hey, there is not much to expect from a film to day because they are not really trying to be good for some odd reason. So what is wrong with Redlettermedia? Is he to smart? ......
So what is wrong with Red letter media? Is he to smart?
@danxtur. What do you mean you don't watch him? You're watching him now. Maybe "Knowing" is a good movie. I don't know I have not seen it. Red letter media is not written by film graduates. Ebert is a film graduate. Do I like all the films he likes? No. Does that mean that those films are bad? No. Taste has nothing to do with whether a film is good or bad.
So what is wrong with Red letter media? Is he to smart?
@BondFreek Right, because this piece of shit Trek film deserves the Academy Award for Best Director over the fucking English Patient, which swept the awards that year. Keep dreaming.
@banglefaar. Oooo! Somebody takes film way to personally. OH That's ME! SHUT YOUR FOWEL MOUTH! The English Patient would have looked the same if it was directed by monkeys! Just because the Hollywood snob noses liked it does not make it a good film. Frakes was amazing with this film, he shot it like he was painting a canvas. I have seen thousands of movies in my life; to this day I can only say that only 12 movies were true master pieces of imagery. Star Trek First Contact is number 10.
@mjmanning123 What do you mean "WHAT!?"? It's the best Star Trek movie. It has the best plot, the most action, the best story, the best acting, no noticeable plot holes, and the best eye popping special effects. Plus the morals are universal for all adults.
@BondFreek Best Story? The fact that the borg need a queen is ridiculous. It undermines the entire point of the Borg. The fact that they can whimsically go back in time is retarded. They spend all their time shooting at them on the ship when the focus of the story (First Contact) is much more engaging. When Picard goes nuts on the holoeck is over the top and out of character for Picard, as is the "Jean-Luc, bl,ow up the damn ship!" 'NNNNOOOOO' scene is gratuitous. The list goes on.
@mjmanning123 The Borg opened the "time tunnel" and it was explained how it could be created. Also did you see the episode "A Matter of Time"? If a man from the 22nd century can figure out how to use a time ship why can't Data figure out how the Borg opened the "time tunnel" and recreate it? If I removed your Pentium processor what would happen to your computer? The same would apply to the Borg. It makes perfect sense if you know how machines operate.
@BondFreek Dude, the fact that they travel though time is ASININE. Looks like someone made my point for me already, but this film is full of some of the worst writing I've seen in ANY movie. There is no POINT to the film. There are no universal themes like in say Undiscovered Country, hell, even Nemesis has better themes than this trite nonsense. The fact that the Borg have been set up as bionic zombies was UNDERMINED by the Queen. She doesn't even DO anything. She just stands there.
Then I guess you haven't seen enough bad movies to see that the writing in this movie is nowhere near as bad as some of the worst movies that have ever been made. Nemesis was just a bad film that might have had a good idea to it but it wasn't executed as well as it could have been. In fact by the time that movie finished I didn't know what point it was trying to make. But with First Contact I can see that Picard learns not to let his hatred for the Borg affect him and his crew like it does.
@BondFreek FC is entertaining and looks good, but the massive plotholes and the fact that Picard is completely out of character in comparison to the series is kind of offputting to me. Also the idea of a Borg Queen kind of sabotages the whole idea behind the Borg. For me it ranks way behind ST2, which was just compelling and well written and ST6, which to me had also a good script, good performances and a strong message. FC isn't as craptacular as 5,7 or 9 but not much better than 3,4 or 10.
@FlowinEnno Name one plot hole. Do you even know what a plot hole is? I felt that the Borg queen answered a few dozen questions from the series. Every brain needs a central processing unit what was the Borg’s? ... Regarding Picard's personality did you even watch the episodes "Family" “Hue”? Picard has deep hatred for the Borg and he has been in denial about his feelings the whole time. As for the focus of the story what more could they have done?
@BondFreek I can't spell out all plotholes in less than 500 characters, but the biggest of them all: If the Borg have access to time travel, why only use it once? Why not use it a few lightyears away from the federation fleet and travel to earth in the past where no such thing exists and just assimilate everything? Why this convoluted First Contact Scheme instead of killing a few cavemen? Just not a well thought out use of time travel.
@FlowinEnno The Borg do not just assimilate species, they also assimilate technology. The only reason they used it on earth is that the earth people defeated them twice. Picard has had lots of action in the series; He even battled an invisible monster. In "I Borg" he was going to use Hue for genocide, and latter he regretted not following through. In the series the Borg’s motives seem to change as well, this can be explained as not knowing enough about them.
@BondFreek What made the borg so intimidating in the first place was that they didn't need a central processing unit. They were just this faceless, almost invincible race of machine like beings who wouldn't negotiate, just assimilate. They threw that all in the trash for the sake of having a classic cartoony villain that could interact with the protagonists. This is imo the start for the badass decay the borg would suffer in Voyager, were they went from "oh crap" to not that threatening anymore.
@FlowinEnno Ignore Voyager when watching it. Voyager did not exist yet. First contacts Moral points are stated in the film. See "The True meaning of Star Trek" video here on YouTube. Time Travel is possible not "ASININE" Einstein proved it. I asked you to list the plot holes and you complained that there was not enough space, yet you made postings that have nothing to do with the movie it's self. It's a Great movie you just don't like the added ideas for the Borg's organization.
@kd84afc I stand corrected, but the Borg still was not part of that show for years after this movie was out. Frakes did an amazing job with this film and Insurrection. This is the best of all the Trek films and all the real experts agree on that subject. The only reason the new one got an Oscar was because it was the first time that Lens flares were used throughout the whole movie, & Jar Jar Abrams is popular right now. If Frakes was as popular, I have no doubt he would have gotten the Oscar.
@BondFreek In the Episode Blood they were first introduce to Voyager they find a borg corpse on the planet at the end of the episode, 1997 so not long after first contact was released and the next episode, They fully introduce the borg the episode "Unity", about 4 months after First contact was released
@kd84afc You really should do your research before you write a respond or a post. Star Trek: First Contact is the eighth feature film in the Star Trek science fiction franchise, released in November 1996. Star Trek Voyager: Blood Fever Episode: VOY 157 Season 3 Ep. 16. Air Date: 02/05/1997. Try again.
@BondFreek well thats what I said? Didnt I say that episode shown in 1997, And First contact was released in 1996,which you say november, SO therefore the borg were introduce in voyager not long after first contact was released so 4 months after
@mlee2001 the episode you're thinking of is Q Who from the second season and it's a tie in to the episode The Neutral Zone from the first season. First Contact was made way before they decided to introduce the Borg on Voyager.
@BondFreek Bullfunk! I have pointed out the Elefant in The Room plothole. And if you start to refer to other Youtubers i can only refer to SFDebris (he's fair), Redlettermedia (he's funny) and Confused Matthew (he hates this films guts). They'd gladly nitpick this movie apart for you. But I don't want to start any kind of internet beef. As you might remember, I didn't say this movie was bad, just that there are better films in the series, and it sure as shit doesn't deserve any Oscars.
@FlowinEnno “Elefant in The Room pothole” What is an “Elefant”, what would it be doing in a room, and what has it got anything to do with plot holes? You did not point out any plot hole in the film let alone one that could allow an elephant into a room. This movie is not that “craptastic” Star Trek (XI).“it sure as shit doesn't deserve any Oscars” Did you study film? No? Then you would not know what would qualify a movie for an Oscar. Frakes dose deserves an Oscar for his brilliant directing.
@BondFreek If the Borg can time travel, why use this just once? And in such a stupid manner. And Frakes did nothing that would warrant winning an Oscar here. Especially since SciFi and Action movies don't tend to get them anyway, but thats neither here nor there.
@FlowinEnno Let me put it this way... What do the Borg always say right before they assimilate a ship or a planet? Here is a hint it's not just "resistance is futile". "We Will add your biological and" here is the big one!, “Technological distinctiveness to our own." "The Borg do not evolve" Data. They steal technology. What good is it to go back to when people are mindless apes, or whatever the planet evolved from, when they can improve their technology also by assimilating them at their peak?
@FlowinEnno PS. James Cameron got best Director for Terminator 2, Spielberg for Jurassic Park and a bunch of other Directors also got it for Directing Action or Sci-Fi. Frakes has done plenty to not only warrant an Oscar but earn one as well. And saying He doesn’t deserve one because "Sci-Fi and Action movies don't tend to get them anyway" is just plain stupid.
@FlowinEnno. Yes he did “pull off something big" he made the whole movie epic. The scope of the canvas, using the whole screen to show his scenes not just peoples backs, the vastness of space was shown, action in every corner of the screen in the space battles, and the dark yet worm glow of the picture reflecting the whole plot of the movie. Very few directors can do that.
@BondFreek I don't think "epicness" is exactly a factor that an oscar jury pays much attention to. Look at the nominees that year. I don't think Frakes fits in there at all. I mean don't get me wrong, FC is one of the better Trek movies, but just not good enough to be this epic masterpiece that you make it out to be.
@FlowinEnno One last thing Laurence of Arabia, Best Director, photography, and Script. The scene they loved the most the vast empty desert sands EPIC; Jurassic Park the favorite scene that gave them the Oscar The introduction to the Brontosaurs EPC; 2001 scene that got them the Oscar flying through the alien artifact EPIC need I go on?
@BondFreek Did you just compare FC to Lawrence of Arabia? Also all of these movies you mentioned have the advantage of having stories that you don't have to switch off your brain for to enjoy them.
@FlowinEnno Wow! You are obsessed aren’t you? he asked you to quit and you just keep jabbing at him. You’re cruel. Oh and all Star Trek movies require your brain to be on. Well may be not the 09 one. A Valid argument? I thought you were discussing First Contact, Not life. I think you really should respect his wishes and drop the whole thing.
@Trekfreek Well if you look back (a few pages now probably) it was him who started the whole argument. I just responded that FC is the best TNG Movie, but not the best ST Movie. He wanted me to expand on that, i did. If he gets pissy about that, too bad for him.
@FlowinEnno. I have read all of it. Bondfreek wanted an intelligent conversation, but you just kept avoiding the questions and you got more belligerent as time went by. True he should have stopped when he realized that you were unwilling to give a real logical reason why you don't like the film or Frakes but he did have the valid points and you had nothing but contempt for the movie and Frakes for no reason that he could see.
@Trekfreek At no point have I said that I didn't like the film of Frakes. I more than once stated that it is one of the better ST films. I ranked it even as the 3rd best. Saying that the film is flawed or that Frakes did nothing here that would warrant him getting an Oscar is a very different thing than hating something. Why am I even arguing with your other troll account?
@FlowinEnno You did say that Frakes never disserved an Oscar. What would you think if someone said that about Spielberg or Hitchcock? Name one of Spielberg’s and Hitchcock’s movies that aren’t flawed. “Raiders of the Lost Ark” was riddled with flaws, same with “Avatar” and they won lots of Oscars. Just because you personally don't like a director does not give you the right to burst a stranger's hero's image. You first said it was the one of the worst of the Trek movies. You picked the fight.
@Trekfreek Thanks for this selfdefeating post by a) naming films that didn't get a direction Oscar b) pointing out how biased you are about the subject and c) blatantly lying about my previous posts. Have a nice life. I got nothing more to say to you.
@FlowinEnno. I think it is best if you stop now. You are now grasping at straws and it shows how little you know about movies and how the computer mind works. First Contact, is the most logical choice, it unified humanity (also in the movie) Humans going into space as individual corporations would be easy to assimilate. End of line BY BY!
@BondFreek Grasping at straws? Then it should be easy to refute, shouldn't it? All you have shown is that you have no idea how to have a civilized discussion. Little hint, it's by having arguments and counterarguments. But no, at the first sign of valid arguments to devalidate you point you quit with a putdown. Very mature.
@FlowinEnno. "Then it should be easy to refute, shouldn't it" from what I could see he did refute every "straw" you chose. It looks to me that you just wont accepted that you lost this argument and should move on.
@FlowinEnno. "Then it should be easy to refute, shouldn't it" from what I could see he did refute every "straw" you chose. It looks to me that you just wont accepted that you lost this argument and should move on.
Really, Roger? You're really ranking this piece of shit above Wrath of Khan, Voyage Home and Undiscovered Country?!!

I remember reading Eberts Sun Times review when the movie was released and could tell he really enjoyed it. I enjoyed reading it and didnt come across a video review until today. Thanks for sharing! Ive made several First Contact clips for my channel. Please check it out and leave feedback.

Best Star Trek Film Ever Period. Loved this film back when I saw in theatres as a kid still love it now.
woollybully100 11 months ago 6
As far as I'm concerned, the Borg are the most horrifying villain they ever came up with in Star Trek, prob worse than Palpatine in Star Wars. I wish they had talked about that. The first time I saw that Borg cube, I was like fuck that - don't want to live there.
TheRealCritique 1 year ago 4
@TheRealCritique People never talk about how Star Trek has made the Borg the most malevolent enemy universal to all life in the galaxy. I rather face 20 Darth Vaders than the Borg. At least I might be able to talk Vader into sparing my life and teaching me the art of lightsabering. If not, just get sliced by a lightsaber and not get assimilated and be a slave to the queen.

I always laugh when these guys comment on the special effects of these films not being as great as ILM when, in fact, ILM has done effects for 7 of the 11 Star Trek films.
amusedmaj 1 year ago 15
@amusedmaj
Yes.
Aside from the Picard eyeball zoom-out scene, just about all the special FX for this movie were done by ILM.
The motion control technology ILM and Lucas developed for Star Wars saw use in Star Trek II for smooth, realistic starship photography, as well as all the subsequent movies and TV shows (not Enterprise, that was CGI).
mohawk5010 1 year ago
@amusedmaj I think its also bc they didn't spend as much as Lucas would have, and in 1996, I remember everybody thinking 'how great' the new CGI was. Which this film didn't too heavily rely on.
Looking back at it now, I think it holds up MUCH better then the CGI laden stuff they had then.
at1212b 1 year ago
@amusedmaj I think they were mostly thinking of Star Trek V; not that the script or the acting was much better in that Shatner-helmed train wreck of a travesty.
icemachine79 1 year ago
@amusedmaj To be fair though, whenever a Trek film doesn't hire ILM, the Trek film seems to suck for some reason. 5, 9, and 10 were just out and out bad; 1 was created before ILM, so I might give that film a pass :)
Cyke101 1 year ago
@amusedmaj True, but its the stage-set design I think they're referring to also, the way the film comes across.. and yea, special effects.
The series did skimp out on them in some of the films for budgetary purposes for sure.
The movie before this one (Generations) felt too much like the TV series which I think added to the cheesiness of it.

@Bartman954 Actually, the best Trek film is the Star Trek film from last year by JJ Abrams!
willhunting1995 1 year ago
@willhunting1995
You read my comment wrong. I said that ST: FC is the best TNG film...ie: The best film from The Next Generation, not overall. I think FC, STII: The Wrath of Khan and Star Trek (JJ Abrams) have equal footing
Bartman954 1 year ago
@Bartman954 Actually, I have always felt that the TNG films were always lacking. To me First Contact is nothing more than a remake of The Best of Both Worlds, and I found the ending to be especially disappointing. I loved the TNG show, but I was never that excited in any of the four TNG features so far.
willhunting1995 1 year ago
@Bartman954 And I feel that all of the TNG films were highly overrated. Especially First Contact. I found FC's ending to be completely ridiculous in that Data kills all the borg by destroying the plasma coolants in Engineering despite them taken over half of the ship. That was one of the biggest cop out endings of any movie I have ever seen. They should have destroyed the Enterprise E.
willhunting1995 1 year ago
@Bartman954 Actually, First Contact is easily the most overrated Trek film of all time!

Frakes hasn't done anything good since this & Insurrection. He did awful kiddie movies like The Librarian, Clockstoppers & Thunderbirds!!!!

Kahn, Undiscovered, First Contact are much better.
scottishthunder47 1 year ago
@scottishthunder47 Actually, I'm not kidding at all, At least Abram's Trek had a lot of excitement, whereas, First Contact felt like a remake of Best of Both Worlds combined with a very weak subplot about a drunken Zephram Cochran. I really disliked the weak ending where Data destroys all the borg by destroying the plasma coolants, and despite the borg taking over half of the ship. To say that First Contact's ending was a major letdown is an understatement.
willhunting1995 1 year ago
@willhunting1995 At least First Contact doesn't have Tyler Fucking Perry in it. Barf.
Abrams' Star Trek was alright in my opinion, but points in the plot were fucking insulting, like how they explained xenolinguistics and the alternate reality. You know why they do that? Because they think you're too dumb to get it.
Also, LENS FLARES

@Firebert No, it's got Alfre FUCKING Woodard in it, easily one of the most annoying actresses out there (Who always shouts out her lines because she really can't act!) @willhunting1995. Did Crusher see him go "nuts"? No. Did she have a medical exam for proof that Picard had lost it? No. So why would she? Data missed the Phoenix deliberately. Were you not watching? People like him count rocks when watching westerns. I look at plot and plot points. It does not matter if the ship has 32 decks or 40 decks. Those are film errors not plot holes. All movies have film errors, good movies don't have plot holes.

danxtur 1 year ago
@danxtur Errors are there because of budget; it costs money to re-shoot. The Borg were hundreds of miles from earth. what you want them to be thousands? The Borg's small escape ship maybe round but it is not the Death Star. The Star Wars prequels were good movies. They remained consistent to the universe Lucas invented and the plots were solid. Even good movies can be hated (see public reviews of Citizen Cane). Confused Matthew is not a professional. What is wrong WITH YOU?
BondFreek 1 year ago
@BondFreek You know what? You really don't know what quality and logic in film works. But that is ok, Hollywood needs people like you to "like" every single crap they make. Matthew is not about just plots and I am very solidly sure that you are really mistaken on what he reviews and how he reviews it.
Quality and personal opinion are to different things, but hey why should I keep talking to a person from the public that has really no clue what good or bad film is. What a waist!
danxtur 1 year ago
@danxtur I have watched Confused Matthew many times. He made good points about the Lion King and Star Trek (09). I know what he does. You are right that quality and personal opinion are to different things, there is no but. However, the problem with some people is that they confuse quality for personal taste. First Contact is a well developed movie; it has good story, great acting, NO plot-holes, and amazing camera angles. It's OK to hate good movies. That is your rite.
BondFreek 1 year ago
@BondFreek yes, you can hate a good movie. But for a very bad reason for my part I have not seen this film.
danxtur 1 year ago
BondFreek 1 year ago
@BondFreek This "film" those not interest me and for the other I trust Redlettermedia and Matthew, because I am a studing film I take time watching films that a more import to learn from. As I say again you need the: What, the how and why.
So I really have to ask you; what makes a film bad for in your judgement?
danxtur 1 year ago
If a Movie has any element from "Plan 9 From Outer Space" then it is a bad film.

mjmanning123 1 year ago
@mjmanning123 What do you mean "WHAT!?"? It's the best Star Trek movie. It has the best plot, the most action, the best story, the best acting, no noticeable plot holes, and the best eye popping special effects. Plus the morals are universal for all adults.
BondFreek 1 year ago
@BondFreek Best Story? The fact that the borg need a queen is ridiculous. It undermines the entire point of the Borg. The fact that they can whimsically go back in time is retarded. They spend all their time shooting at them on the ship when the focus of the story (First Contact) is much more engaging. When Picard goes nuts on the holoeck is over the top and out of character for Picard, as is the "Jean-Luc, bl,ow up the damn ship!" 'NNNNOOOOO' scene is gratuitous. The list goes on.
mjmanning123 1 year ago
@mjmanning123 The Borg opened the "time tunnel" and it was explained how it could be created. Also did you see the episode "A Matter of Time"? If a man from the 22nd century can figure out how to use a time ship why can't Data figure out how the Borg opened the "time tunnel" and recreate it? If I removed your Pentium processor what would happen to your computer? The same would apply to the Borg. It makes perfect sense if you know how machines operate.
BondFreek 1 year ago
@BondFreek Dude, the fact that they travel though time is ASININE. Looks like someone made my point for me already, but this film is full of some of the worst writing I've seen in ANY movie. There is no POINT to the film. There are no universal themes like in say Undiscovered Country, hell, even Nemesis has better themes than this trite nonsense. The fact that the Borg have been set up as bionic zombies was UNDERMINED by the Queen. She doesn't even DO anything. She just stands there.
mjmanning123 1 year ago
Then I guess you haven't seen enough bad movies to see that the writing in this movie is nowhere near as bad as some of the worst movies that have ever been made. Nemesis was just a bad film that might have had a good idea to it but it wasn't executed as well as it could have been. In fact by the time that movie finished I didn't know what point it was trying to make. But with First Contact I can see that Picard learns not to let his hatred for the Borg affect him and his crew like it does.

@BondFreek Best NextGen movie? Sure. Best Trek Movie? Hell no!
FlowinEnno 1 year ago
@FlowinEnno Could you expand on that? Or are you just trying to pick a fight?
BondFreek 1 year ago
@BondFreek FC is entertaining and looks good, but the massive plotholes and the fact that Picard is completely out of character in comparison to the series is kind of offputting to me. Also the idea of a Borg Queen kind of sabotages the whole idea behind the Borg. For me it ranks way behind ST2, which was just compelling and well written and ST6, which to me had also a good script, good performances and a strong message. FC isn't as craptacular as 5,7 or 9 but not much better than 3,4 or 10.
FlowinEnno 1 year ago
@FlowinEnno Name one plot hole. Do you even know what a plot hole is? I felt that the Borg queen answered a few dozen questions from the series. Every brain needs a central processing unit what was the Borg’s? ... Regarding Picard's personality did you even watch the episodes "Family" “Hue”? Picard has deep hatred for the Borg and he has been in denial about his feelings the whole time. As for the focus of the story what more could they have done?
BondFreek 1 year ago 2
@BondFreek I can't spell out all plotholes in less than 500 characters, but the biggest of them all: If the Borg have access to time travel, why only use it once? Why not use it a few lightyears away from the federation fleet and travel to earth in the past where no such thing exists and just assimilate everything? Why this convoluted First Contact Scheme instead of killing a few cavemen? Just not a well thought out use of time travel.
FlowinEnno 1 year ago
@FlowinEnno The Borg do not just assimilate species, they also assimilate technology. The only reason they used it on earth is that the earth people defeated them twice. Picard has had lots of action in the series; He even battled an invisible monster. In "I Borg" he was going to use Hue for genocide, and latter he regretted not following through. In the series the Borg’s motives seem to change as well, this can be explained as not knowing enough about them.
BondFreek 1 year ago
@BondFreek What made the borg so intimidating in the first place was that they didn't need a central processing unit. They were just this faceless, almost invincible race of machine like beings who wouldn't negotiate, just assimilate. They threw that all in the trash for the sake of having a classic cartoony villain that could interact with the protagonists. This is imo the start for the badass decay the borg would suffer in Voyager, were they went from "oh crap" to not that threatening anymore.
FlowinEnno 1 year ago

@BondFreek to my knowledge the Borg were introduced on TNG in a Q epsiode (not sure which one) but that should predate Voyager at any rate
mlee2001 9 months ago 2

FlowinEnno 1 year ago
@FlowinEnno “Elefant in The Room pothole” What is an “Elefant”, what would it be doing in a room, and what has it got anything to do with plot holes? You did not point out any plot hole in the film let alone one that could allow an elephant into a room. This movie is not that “craptastic” Star Trek (XI).“it sure as shit doesn't deserve any Oscars” Did you study film? No? Then you would not know what would qualify a movie for an Oscar. Frakes dose deserves an Oscar for his brilliant directing.
BondFreek 1 year ago
@BondFreek If the Borg can time travel, why use this just once? And in such a stupid manner. And Frakes did nothing that would warrant winning an Oscar here. Especially since SciFi and Action movies don't tend to get them anyway, but thats neither here nor there.
FlowinEnno 1 year ago
@FlowinEnno Let me put it this way... What do the Borg always say right before they assimilate a ship or a planet? Here is a hint it's not just "resistance is futile". "We Will add your biological and" here is the big one!, “Technological distinctiveness to our own." "The Borg do not evolve" Data. They steal technology. What good is it to go back to when people are mindless apes, or whatever the planet evolved from, when they can improve their technology also by assimilating them at their peak?
BondFreek 1 year ago
@FlowinEnno PS. James Cameron got best Director for Terminator 2, Spielberg for Jurassic Park and a bunch of other Directors also got it for Directing Action or Sci-Fi. Frakes has done plenty to not only warrant an Oscar but earn one as well. And saying He doesn’t deserve one because "Sci-Fi and Action movies don't tend to get them anyway" is just plain stupid.
BondFreek 1 year ago
@BondFreek I didn't say that that was the reason. What i meant that an action director has to pull off something big, which Frakes didn't.
FlowinEnno 1 year ago
@FlowinEnno. Yes he did “pull off something big" he made the whole movie epic. The scope of the canvas, using the whole screen to show his scenes not just peoples backs, the vastness of space was shown, action in every corner of the screen in the space battles, and the dark yet worm glow of the picture reflecting the whole plot of the movie. Very few directors can do that.
BondFreek 1 year ago
@BondFreek I don't think "epicness" is exactly a factor that an oscar jury pays much attention to. Look at the nominees that year. I don't think Frakes fits in there at all. I mean don't get me wrong, FC is one of the better Trek movies, but just not good enough to be this epic masterpiece that you make it out to be.
FlowinEnno 1 year ago
@FlowinEnno One last thing Laurence of Arabia, Best Director, photography, and Script. The scene they loved the most the vast empty desert sands EPIC; Jurassic Park the favorite scene that gave them the Oscar The introduction to the Brontosaurs EPC; 2001 scene that got them the Oscar flying through the alien artifact EPIC need I go on?
BondFreek 1 year ago
@BondFreek Did you just compare FC to Lawrence of Arabia? Also all of these movies you mentioned have the advantage of having stories that you don't have to switch off your brain for to enjoy them.
FlowinEnno 1 year ago
@FlowinEnno Wow! You are obsessed aren’t you? he asked you to quit and you just keep jabbing at him. You’re cruel. Oh and all Star Trek movies require your brain to be on. Well may be not the 09 one. A Valid argument? I thought you were discussing First Contact, Not life. I think you really should respect his wishes and drop the whole thing.
Trekfreek 1 year ago
@Trekfreek Well if you look back (a few pages now probably) it was him who started the whole argument. I just responded that FC is the best TNG Movie, but not the best ST Movie. He wanted me to expand on that, i did. If he gets pissy about that, too bad for him.
FlowinEnno 1 year ago
@FlowinEnno.
Trekfreek 1 year ago
@Trekfreek At no point have I said that I didn't like the film of Frakes. I more than once stated that it is one of the better ST films. I ranked it even as the 3rd best. Saying that the film is flawed or that Frakes did nothing here that would warrant him getting an Oscar is a very different thing than hating something. Why am I even arguing with your other troll account?
FlowinEnno 1 year ago
@FlowinEnno You did say that Frakes never disserved an Oscar. What would you think if someone said that about Spielberg or Hitchcock? Name one of Spielberg’s and Hitchcock’s movies that aren’t flawed. “Raiders of the Lost Ark” was riddled with flaws, same with “Avatar” and they won lots of Oscars. Just because you personally don't like a director does not give you the right to burst a stranger's hero's image. You first said it was the one of the worst of the Trek movies. You picked the fight.
Trekfreek 1 year ago
@Trekfreek Thanks for this selfdefeating post by a) naming films that didn't get a direction Oscar b) pointing out how biased you are about the subject and c) blatantly lying about my previous posts. Have a nice life. I got nothing more to say to you.
FlowinEnno 1 year ago
@FlowinEnno. I think it is best if you stop now. You are now grasping at straws and it shows how little you know about movies and how the computer mind works. First Contact, is the most logical choice, it unified humanity (also in the movie) Humans going into space as individual corporations would be easy to assimilate. End of line BY BY!
BondFreek 1 year ago
@BondFreek Grasping at straws? Then it should be easy to refute, shouldn't it? All you have shown is that you have no idea how to have a civilized discussion. Little hint, it's by having arguments and counterarguments. But no, at the first sign of valid arguments to devalidate you point you quit with a putdown. Very mature.
FlowinEnno 1 year ago
@FlowinEnno. "Then it should be easy to refute, shouldn't it" from what I could see he did refute every "straw" you chose. It looks to me that you just wont accepted that you lost this argument and should move on.
