starting out, its better to get use to layers, as you go further, you'll automatically start to realize what to keep in and what to leave out.

that experience will later translate into enough knowledge about painting that you wont need to use as many layers, maybe, not even more than one.

but in art, just go as it feels best for you, from there, you'll improve so long as you are engaged and paying attention to your artwork and work flow. :D
