All I can say is I cannot believe that I even found this song!! I remembered it from juke box in a bar called "Dirty Dans" in Brandon, Riverview, Fl area, but all the same...great song. One of those timeless love songs ya know.....
this is available on CD as Barry Scott's 'Lost 45's Vol 2'....we were not a one hit wonder, but a two hit wonder....i have posted here a needle-drop video of the second single. 'Holding On'.....
I use to do sound work along with a former associate for the Road Apples all around the New England area. I believe that was the year 1977.They were all good guys. The managers name was Gordon. I do remember the bass player had a regular job working for Raytheon.
Great song! Vocal on side A, instrumental on side B. Wish there had been an album. Stupid record company. The song lives on. I think the stupid record company is kaput. Pushed the wrong records I guess.
I'm from Boston I know that this song did very well in the Boston market,,, Floped in the rest of the country,,,I liked it....They sound like Dr. Hook and the medicin Show...I didn't know they were from Boston at the time it was on the charts...............Pauli
'pushed from Cambridge'? #1 on WBZ-FM, #2 on both major AM outlets (stuck behind 'Convoy, which is perhaps what @richyrollins was listening to.) With ZERO 'push' from stupid Polydor.
Hey I guess everyone is entitled to their opinion...I grew up in Cambridge and Finn is a friend of mine.....Come to Cambridge anytime and I'll put this song on for ya !
these guys sucked 35 years ago. and i lived in Boston when wrko and wmex am radio tried to push these fucking bums from Cambridge! the lead singer voice sucks! i say fuck the hippies and fuck cambridge as well get a job and take a bath you fucking bums!
Wow...I sure am glad you posted this. I was really surprised to find it since Itunes doesn't seem to know about it. Brings back lots of memories from that era. Don't know what made me think about it, but the band name popped into my head the other day and I just couldn't quite remember the tune. But thanks to Google, YouTube, and Chuck I can relive some good memories. Thanks Chuck. I can still remember laughing my ass off when I found out what road apples were.
hey @yurhosed -- we may have sucked, but we never 'ate shit'...Would you like to get together and 'discuss' this? Funny how we ate shit, and yet the only two songs we ever released went national #36 and #77, and a Miller commercial. Do you have any music you've written you can play for me? Also, 'great screename!'...
Funny you say that, loser. When they opened for the band Boston at the Garden, the crowd actually called them back for an encore. No accounting for taste, I guess! Also strange that you tracked them down on YouTube and admittedly saw them play a few times. Wonder why you insult them after all these years. Jealousy, perhaps?
Wow, I cant believe I found this. Road Apples with Duke and the Drivers performed at Leary Field, Waltham sometime around 1976 or 77? Where can I get a download of this?
*NOT* a 1-Hit Wonder!!! We were a 2-Hit Wonder!!!......as in, the only two singles we ever released went Billboard Top 100...I've posted the followup song 'Holding On', which went #76 a few months later.....you can still get these 45's on Ebay, if you're interested...ChuckE
thanks for listening...i am currently working on a video for the song.....not just a single image...but something to go along with the song...which, by the way...is quite a memory maker for me....and my family.....
Thanks for posting this Albert!. I recongnized my shot of the sheet music! I have a mint copy now, so I will send you that & some great stills of the band. If you haven't found you way there yet, check out the needle-drop video of the second single, just search UTube 'Holding2'...
@chuckeisenhardt Hey Chuck, just trying to figure out how to reply, sorry. I'm Dave's brother Brian. You guys actually played at my school in Portsmouth, RI back in 76! Your hit was #1 in RI for SIX WEEKS!!! I came to your shows as soon as I turned 18 (the drinking age back then) until you broke up. Wish you never did! Hope you're doing well!!!! Dave isn't online yet, believe it or not!
Hey Brian! I miss being in touch with him, He's quite the hermit. Tell him to call me back sometime, OK? Tell him we need to get the band back together and record 'Love Shark"!
That darn song gave me chills, and still does, when I think of it.
I can't say I remember that one, Chuck, but I'll let him know you'd love to hear from him. Hey, thanks to you, I got to hear Holding On for the first time in decades!
Man !!!!!!! I cut many classes in college to hang out in the lounge listening to a JUKE BOX of all things and one of the songs played the most was Let's Live Together. A memory renewed forever. Thanks for posting this one !
Thanks for posting. I played in Road Apples. The image is of the sheet music. The guy on the right with the SG is Dave (Finn) Finnerty, writer and lead singer. I'm next to Finn, then Jean-do Sifantus (drums) Bard Richmond (bass) and Flip Morse (lead guitar) There was a 2nd single ('Holding On') that also charted nationally (#36 and #77) and we still couldn't get an album deal. To this day I cannot believe it! You can get the 45 on Ebay still, and it's on Barry Scott's 'Lost 45's Volume 2' CD.
Hi, Great tune, I have the 45, is it true that one of you guy's were originally from the Boston area? also heard you guy's went to New Jersey and changed the band name to the "Assholes" (not makin' fun, I actually heard this??) this is one of my all time feel good fav's, wasn't it covered for a Miller beer comercial in the 80's?? (I wan't to say the Smithereens??)
Well, that's just insulting! Why would ANYONE change their name to 'The Assholes' and move to NEW JERSEY???. Band was mostly Boston area, Jean-Do was conservatory trained in France. First emerged as 'Finnery, Morse, and Richmond' and rather folksy, and were a fixture around Jack's in Cambridge, where their pictures was on the wall next to Bonnie Raitt. I was invited in when Flip broke his leg quite seriously, just to play out the bookings, but then ended up sticking for a couple of years.
These guys played at the prom at my high school in 1976

Years later, Finn formed power band called 'The Jones' and
covered his own song. It was that version that Miller picked up on. This album is still out there, if youre patient.
