If any war buffs have not seen the movie: "The Fog of War: Eleven Lessons from the Life of Robert S. McNamara"

Seek it out! Although (Re: WW II) it deals with mostly the war in the Pacific and especially the firebombing of Japan; the movie (which is basically a long interview/statement by Robert S McNamara, who was JFM & LBJ's Secretary of Defense. He looks at how decisions are made in wartime and many other valuable insights.

He is a very smart man who made some poor choices and learned.

as a military historian, yes i have seen the fog of war which was narrated by robert mcnamara and he was the secretary of defense under john f kennedy's and lyndon b johnson's administrations ( JFK & LBJ ). he was one of the whiz kids brought into government in the early 1960's and he was a veteran in the pacific war and became a lieutenant colonel in the army air corps while serving under general curtis lemay. he was instrumental in the bombing campaign of japan and tokyo.

Besides Maliuvic, the reason why we used the Atomic bomb was because invading the whole island of Japan would have been more worse then the dropping of the bomb themselves. We would have lost tens of thousands of troops as the whole of Japan even it's civilians would have taken up arms. We had to take the quick route out in order to end the war faster.

He certainly was. He had Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania whose independance was sacrificed by Roosevelt and Churchill for Stalin's support. He had eastern europe. He would have declared war against his allies, moved his western forces as far as France and also taken south east asia and the islands of Japan. Quite the conquering despot he was.

the soviets did declare war on japan in 1945 and invaded and occupied manchuoko or manchuria and helped with the establishment of the communists in north korea. they also seized a couple of disputed islands of the kuriles in the soviet far east of the north western pacific rim.

Now as for Korea, America would have won the "forgotten war" if it wasn't for McArthur's disobedience and bringing China into the conflict when they promised that they wouldn't get involved if America simply stayed out of it's territory. McArthur is the reason why N.K. became and still remains a communist state.

Rouge Generals have a way of causing messes. Gen Curtis LeMay did his best to provoke as nuclear war with the USSR during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. After Kennedy told the cabinet that we had won the stand-off, LeMay said we should go in and bomb Cuba and invade. General LeMay told the President that it was "the greatest defeat in our history" and that the U.S. should invade immediately.

you are in error here. no American history books written lay blame for north korea being communist upon General MacArthur. Douglas MacArthur did not bring the communist chinese into the conflict. the chinese communist simply lied and the politicians ( harry s truman ) believed them. besides we did not invade china, we crossed the 38th parallel of the korean peninsula up to the yalu river and the chinese assisted a communist ally just as the soviet communists did in that war.

I do know that Korea was going to be communist even if MacArthur didn't cross into Chinese terroritory (America would have "won" in a sense that an agreement would have been made within the UN and American favor). Now beside the miswording...MacArthur did bring the chinese into the conflict after Truman told him not too, hence why truman dismissed him afterwards.

MacArthur did not bring the chinese communists into the korean conflict. the chinese came into the conflict to aid the north korean communists who were militarily defeated and driven out of the korean peninsula. Truman fired MacArthur due to his supposed 'insubordination' by threatening to attack the chinese mainland AFTER the chinese had crossed the yalu river into the korean peninsula. as for an American victory or western victory in the un that is speculative.

no not a history troll at all, just a military historian who searches for the truth and sticks to the facts of what has happened. the chinese communists under mao tse tung felt threatened by the un and the American forces driving the north korean communists to the yalu river and certainly did not want a democratically governed unified korean peninsula on their border. additionally, the chinese were allied with the soviet empire and as fellow travelers were obligated to expand communism.

I'm not sure where you read that - How was Japan "almost winning" when we dropped the two nukes? The firebombing of Japanese cities wrecked more death and destruction than the atomic bombs; Japan had already been brought to its knees in late 1944 by the US Navy, sinking some 5 million tons of shipping and 214 warships. At wars end, only 12% of Japans merchant fleet remained before the bombing campaign began in 45 the atomic bombs were dropped to avoid a bloody invasion. Japan had no supplies...
