MarloweDK, do you use an audio compressor on your amp/pre-amp to make the hammer-ons more clear? I don't have an effects box connected to my bass amp, and my hammer-ons sound very soft compared to slap. Do you think that I need compression (or something like that) or do I just need to hammer-on harder with my fingers?
marlowe i like this vid an the way you show it . i have only two questions . do you only hit with you thumb (ok sometime you plug the string, but mainwhile with your thumb, right?) on the last frets? and the next thing is why it sounds not so funky when i play it greetings from germany and i hope you'll answer ;)
i really dont get slapbass..ive been trying for aages and i cant get the technique, whenever i try to pop with my thumb it just sounds like the strings hitting the metal between 2 frets
Thanks for all the great work you do...I'm sure you always hear it, but you seriously provide a great service to many bass players. We should get yours and Ed Friedland's faces etched into Mt. Rushmore!!
@Zh0rik the travolta on his shirt looks so strange of a color, he almost looks like some kind of undead travolta. and what's better, is while he's playing, it looks like a dancing undead travolta.
when you play 7th fret of the A string, do you hammer that on as if to tap it with your left hand? also, it looks like at one point in the riff you make a muted slap sound by hitting the strings on the fretboard with your left hand, is that what your actually doing? coz i cant see to make the sound when i hit the fretboard with my left hand
Do enjoy your videos, very good indeed ive been playing 30 years and never quite mastered the funk slap style, there is more to it than meets the eye! What is that pink jazz bass? i notice it has a weird bridge, zero fret and a chunky nut and a great looking fretboard what wood is it? sound great through those chunky jazz pick ups too :)
Do enjoy your videos, very good indeed ive been playing 30 years and never quite matered the funk slap style, there is more to it than meets the eye! hey marlowe, this is a BIG "thank you" for all your posts. i bought a bass for my 12 year old daughter but your videos made me curious and i start exploring it as well. your teaching techniques are phenomenal. cheers and thanks again.
Ok...so pink bass guitar, a poster that says "BLOW" and t-shirt that look like black and white dudes marriage....in just sayin! but this guy is really good
It's easier for me to play this using the G on the D string instead of the open G string for two reasons. 1, I seem to have more power hammering down on the E when use the G on the D string. 2, I guess I just have fat fingers and can't get a solid tone on the open G while trying to hammer to the E. My index finger always grazes the G string just enough to actually create a harmonic. I guess thing just comes with practice though.
I play a 4-string and I can only seem to slap on the E string, on all the others strings I just end up hitting another string, and for some reason I get a very muted noise on anything I play past the 7th or so fret.
Thanks so much for all your videos MarloweDK! I used to play using my index to pinky over 2 frets because I like how you can still have a relaxed hand, although my old bass teacher encouraged me to always use one finger per fret. I'm thinking of switching back, at least for stuff like octave patterns and whatnot. I was just wondering what your thoughts were on that and the approach you use on your left hand technique?
@tianolp Most of the time we play bassline patterns in the octave postion below 5th fret. No need for a finger per fret unless playing scale patterns IMO. I use the double bass fingering mostly in lower postions where ring and pinky are "glued" together as one finger
If this is going to be a standalone DVD (standalone from youtube), some talking would definitely be appreciated for many students for explanation of (for example) the left hand slapping techniques. Plus, what would your videos be like without a little nice Danish English! I'm definitely going to buy the DVD! Keep it up.
I'm sure the multinational community that loves your videos would die for a chance to translate. You could probably recruit your adoring fans to do a little translation for you. You can have a simple application thingy; or heck get someone to run it for you b/c I'm sure you're busy
I'd be glad to translate or help out anyway you can. You've given so much to the music community and you're an inspiration to bassists everywhere, regardless of language
If you don't want to speak on the video, then you could just write all your comments, if any, for the differents sections, have them translated to a bunch of languages then, and include them on the DVD as a PDF's. I personally think you could speak the slap techniques.
Also, if you use Guitar Pro or similar software, it would be so much greater if you included the tabs in this format on the disc along with the text ones as well!
Looking forward, and make Intermed. & Advanced DVD's! :)
I'd really like to know how you record your vidoes? what camera are you using?
the sound quality is good, is it the mic that is on the camera? or are you using a seperate mic? If I want to do video my camera the mic isn't that good. Easy enough to record sound well but on video as well makes it tricky, maybe if theres some info on Marlowes site about this?
Cool vid, man. I look forward to being able to get my hands on this DVD. One question, though. Will the DVD have an explanation and demonstration of how to set up a bass for slap?
On a slightly unrelated note, I'm glad you got rid of a lot of the clanky acoustic noise from the strings. Your first preview had a biitttt too much of it!
awesome, clean shots Marlow, so nice it's not in a horrible studio setting and the inserts concerntrating on the left hand are just perfect. Maybe you can include more content on the DVD if you forget some of the right hand shots :øD
@stoob1969 Thx, but it seems that people are divided regarding to which hand should be emphasized. And yes some of the licks wont have the close ups at all
I agree with @YklausK! What advice or link can you lead me to to getting a good tone? I know it is a broad topic since we have a lot of factors to consider but if you could lead us to a good path, it would be highly appreciated! Thank you
Are those active PUPs on that bass? Your tone sounds way too punchy to be passive. Would you also recommend using active PUPs over passive ones for slap? I find tonal quality better with passive, but it doesnt punch through as well as actives do.
