I wish that the popular music of today was still swing! Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Bruno Mars, Kanye West, The Black Eyed Peas, and all those other "popular" musicians don't have a thing on the Swing Era big bands! Their music don't mean a thing, because it ain't got that swing! ;)
Without a doubt this is the premier rendition of "Swing, Swing, Swing" and personifies swing jazz better than any other song. This is an example of true and pure musical art, where all played in support of each other and the musical score. Krupa needed no backing down, he supplemented and complimented this song better than any other drummer.
This is by far the best rendition of that great classic Sing, Sing, Sing. Nothing even comes close. It has stood the ravages of time and we are to thank that one unknown person who had the initiative to place a single microphone over that orchestra to capture one of the greatest moments in jazz history. It is best played in subdude lighting and as loud as your HI Fi will allow, or with headphones, so you don't upset the heavy metal and punk jerks who believe they know music!!
I had this version on a cassette tape many years ago and unfortunately lost it. Knew only this version back then and it's the best I have ever heard. A classic and masterful music.
By the way. There is film of this concert in existance, albeit a selection of of clips taken by a news reel company ( it was a big news event after all)The clips are silent as I recall and include the jam session and Sing Sing Sing. They are easily identifiable.Damn shame it was'nt filmed in its entirety. There's a whole education in the art of Swing music right there.
Today is the 74th Anniversary of this milestone in Jazz.Gene never played better than he did on this famous occasion. The whole band is faultless through out.Oh for a time machine!!!
Man, I have just died and gone to Jazz heaven. I have heard this for the first time and I have goose bumps all over. Thank you so much for posting. I had to buy the whole concert on CD, the Jasmine release too. A great restoration if you ask me.
Absolutely fantastic! Those guys were defintely cookin' that night; wish it was filmed. Were there at least photos?.....didn't find anything in Google images.
Btw, Krupa laid down some new territory in this Sing Sing Sing chart. He almost sounded at times like the first rock drummer.....lol
This was the performance that brought swing jazz to the mainstream and it made Gene Krupa a star in his own right. It also sealed Benny Goodman's place as the King of Swing. Thanks for finding and posting it. It has to be my all time favorite version.
I just saw Woody Allen's "Midnight in Paris" and this was one of the tunes on the sound track but, alas, not this version which is the best and the one I'm most familiar with which is on the original 1938 Concert at Carnegie Hall with the Benny Goodman Orchestra album. Thanks DarwingFlash for posting this best version.
Gene Krupa turned the drums into an instrument. He didn't just beat the drums he "Played" the drums. This tune turned me on to big band when I happened to catch by accident Don Kennedy's "Big Band Jump". I have been a big fan since. It was not the music of my youth but it is now my favorite.
@rocktillipop Yeah, this stuff was a little before my time...by like 60 years :P But I do love it so and the Carnegie Hall concert is an absolutely breathtaking album. It's so amazing that it was recorded, because it wasn't supposed to be and then it got lost and found and overall has a pretty amazing history which allows us to hear it today!
Jess Stacys solo is like a life. Starting slowly, happiness through childhood, then as an adult a bit mellow, a pick me up when grand children arrive, and then the slow passing!
Thanks for posting this! This is one of my favorite performances of all time and it could be found in pieces on Youtube before your upload. This performance is seriously one of the most powerful things I've ever heard.
@TheyCallMeLackey No problem! Youtube extending the runtime for vids helped a lot! Unfortunately, a piece like Honeysuckle Rose can't be posted as it's basically 20 minutes of them improving and my youtube account has a 15 minute limit to it :/
This is the definitive swing band performance. So much talent on one stage, in one band; it's incredible. People will be dancing in their seats a cetury from now, as this music will never die.
@johnpauljones69 If memory serves, it wasn't planned either. Benny just points to him and tells him to do a solo. It's in the booklet that came with the CD, but it just shows how much talent and skill these guys had

Everybody was GREAT. But Jess Stacy? He's the only one could make Gene Krupa back down. Maybe the best live performance of anything anywhere.

No one yet has mentioned Jess Stacey's piano solo toward the end of the piece. Brings tears to your eyes.
