  • One of the interesting things that I learned about bat echo location is that if we could hear them they would be absolutely deafenning to us because their chirps are so loud.

  • @artyfarty2 I read that in 'The Blind Watchmaker'. I consider us pretty lucky that we can't hear them :).

  • How adorable! ^-^ The bat's pretty cute too ;)

  • Bats are cool

  • Thats so cute, ha ha.

  • The sound of a bat echo is a chirp: it sounds just like a bird chirp if you slow it down enough. I know because I tried it once - slowed down a bat chirp using an audio tool on my PC. I think the bat detector is producing a click for each "chirp" it hears.

  • (now I understand)

The sounds we hear just after Dawkins has turned on the box may be... I dunno!

Perhaps a ringing interference due to some electronic device nearby.

  • Maybe the sounds are made up by the box when it detects the start of an ultrasound stream from the bat; but I don't think they have nothing to do with the real waveform of the bat's sounds.

  • I think you'll find they are modulated into our hearing range.

  • Am i not supposed to hear the sound that comes when dawkins turns on the machine? Im not talking about the echo sound made for human ears but the high frequent low bat-sound

  • Doesn't it depend on they species of bat? There are various echo location methods employed by bats.
