Great song.but on the fugees side is also a great song..just brought together as one from two kinda of great artist....

"one time, one time" simply noting to any open minded music lover that its one time song verse etc..its uh hip hop funk thing..

I agree with you totally. The (Re) Fugees DID destroy this great song. Roberta Flack's version is fairly good.

But NO versions can top Lori Lieberman's extraordinary original and this great follow up by Perry Como.

And you're right Lauryn Hill (of the Fugees) left out the entire third verse.

apparently this was written by lori lieberman who say don mclean and wrote a poem about him,and the rest is history.

@clone63742 Correct, Lori Lieberman is the original singer of this wonderful song.

She wrote a poem after seeing Don McLean. Norman Gimble and Charles Fox, set her poem to music, and you're right, the rest is history.

This version, by Perry Como, has a very similar arrangement to Lori's original.

In fact even this version may have also been recorded before Roberta Flack's but wasn't released until afterwards.

What a superb rendition!  Perry Como must have been about seventy years old when he recorded this one. Beautiful artist.

You're ahead by a decade, he was sixty-one when he did this. But, no matter, he STILL could sing! More often than not, sadly, when a singer, male or female begins to age their voices decline. But not Mr. C! He Obviously took care of his voice,and sounded just as good as he did some 30 years before. but you're right,too, this IS a superb rendition!

Actually Perry Como was the SECOND singer of this song, the first was folk singer/songwriter Lori Lieberman. I hope you get a chance to listen to Lieberman's original. Her original and this version by Perry Como are almost identical in arrangement. Lori wrote a poem which was the basis for the song after having seen a then unknown Don Mclean singing "Empty Chairs"

Great! And, by all means let me know when you do,so you can see, or rather hear where it all began! Be sure it's original 1971 version. She has redone the song twice since, in 1996, and 2009. The original 1971(or is it '72?) recording is the one you want.

I think both these early versions are better than Roberta's, though I like her's as well.
