Jim Jones wanted nothing to do with the government, this is why he created jonestown in another country. A secluded , and as far off area he could hide. he did use mind control on his followers. he played on their weakness and fears. He offered them hope and a sense of belonging. ultimately ,when one was commited, they were in fear of leaving.publicly humiliated or beaten if thought to go against his words. People wanted out, and he shut the thing down before the government would have. scary!
