My Olive Rainbow does this too. I have video of him on here on his back, eyes closed & holding onto a plastic lid, sound asleep. It's a very vulnerable position so it show just how much they trust us :)
There was a young greek-cheek conure at the store I used to volunteer at that loved sleeping on his back. That poor bird was woken up by concerned customers all the time, never got a full nap in.
I think they are called Raindbow Lorikeets! They do have special diet needs, including lots of access to fresh sweet fruit, I believe. They like/need the nectar and it is a diet consideration. You can "google" it for more information. I am no expert and Ozbirds could probably tell you more.
@ozbirds it helps if you have a garden to plant bottle brush shrubs and gravillea not only are the shrubs water saving aussie natives the birds appreciate a flower or 2 to have as part of their diet I know Skittles thinks all his christmases have come at once when I get some of the flowers
@mumandtwins Yes....mine get bottle brush and gum tree flowers from time to time. The streets here are lined with both. They love them.:) I wander the neighbourhood with a pair of scissors and pilfer the flowers hahah.
This is so adorable! Are you sure Squirt is alright, though? Did you have an Avian vet check her out? I never heard of a bird on it's back all by itself while it was still living until now......
She is fine...thanks for caring enough to ask...she often sleeps this way...in fact she reclines this way a lot too. She is one very relaxed little lorikeet. Scruff does lay prostrate too.. but on his tummy. It's a lorikeet thing I think.
Thumbs Up If That Was Cute <3 <3 <3

That is crazy! If I had this kind of bird, the first time she did this I'd be scared to death she was dead! What a funny bird!

I have been caught out by my 'sleeping lorikeets', but honestly, if you had a build in feather pillow and blanket, wouldn't you do the same thing?

They're so cute! I've always thought that a lory would be cool to have (I'm an avid bird lover), but their diet needs are too complex for me.
