I think that , in many respects , Tony Banks was the ' beating heart ' in Genesis - he wrote this superb track , co-wrote all the other tracks on this album , wrote One for the Vine on Wind and Wuthering ( best track on that album , in my opinion ) , and there's all that great hammond (and mellotron and synth) on various parts of Supper's Ready - and on Fountains of Salamcis - and the instrumental bit on Cinema Show etc etc
@hevanibelheim It's funny you should say that as it reminded me of my dad liking it. Me and my brother were Genesis fans and were playing Trick of the Tail in the 1970s when my dad walked in. Mad Man Moon was the song on at the time. He was usually skeptical of all modern groups but he sat down and listened to this without a word. When it finished he told us he thought it was extremely good, which made me happy. I've got lots of good memories of my dad and I'm glad he liked some of my music
This is probably THE song most fans would have liked to see or at least hear performed live. Definitely a peak in Tony Banks’ songwriting career and in the band’s catalogue overall. And it never made it to any anthology or archive box set... which goes to show this is NOT a perfect world. lol

Part of the reason I love this song is because it mentions my hometown (Newcastle).
