Peralta didn't invent the documentary, but he did an unbelievable job with 'Dogtown'. What he also did was tap into an appetite for this period to be thoroughly revisited through documentaries , especially while the players are still around.
Probably a good story but we've seen it all with Freeride. Same footage, same story. Of course now those guys have aged and we can have a historical perspective which might be the difference... The only thing that bothers me about this movie is how some of those guys still want to glorify themselves and take credit for pro surfing..
Um, they don't really need to glorify themselves...they are legends. Take another listen , you pretty much hear every authority in surfing giving them credit for changing the direction of surfing culture.
Well, I just think like all documentaries, it needed a story, and a way to elevate a bunch of guys to the level of legends... Movies and magazines create legends, people are not legends by themselves. There was a time Tom Curren was the ultimate surfer, the God of surfing... As soon as he drifted in alcoholism and the Slater area had begun, very little was said about him. You could very well say Peter Cole and those guys were legends. No need to glorify one generation more than another.
Thats not the point, Curren was a legend , these guys preceeded him by ten years though. There is nothing wrong with celebrating these surfers. It was a definite regime change. Why on earth be negative about it. Simon Anderson came along with the thruster in 81' and it was the end for these guys too, It's just a look back, Mark Richards was the Slater of his time and helped lift the whole level of surfing. I haven't seen the film yet, but these guys were my heroes when i was a kid.
Yeah I also admired the way Mark Richards surf, he was fluid and stylish, could ride any size wave and look good. I would compare him to Joel Parkinson. The reason I find this whole busting down the door business a bit ridiculous, is because we've heard it all in Freeride and I dont like their claim they created pro surfing. They are just a continuation of what was already happening, and without that past, they would not be there either.

I admit that the whole premise of the film is to give a bunch of old fart surfers a trip down memory lane , but I'm sure it will be a better looking document than Freeride. Seriously organized , highly sponsored , highly visible surfing contests were born in this period, and the surfers were becoming celebrities. For the first time they were being backed with money, and not just considered reprobates.

I saw it early-mid 70s, in a little surfer, burger joint at Cape Hatteras, probably on 8mm.
It had some great tube rides & kickouts, cut PERFECTLY, to Santana's "Black Magic Woman/Gypsy Queen".
I've been looking for it ever since.

yea the track at the end is cool when I saw the trailer of bustin down the door on tv the end track jus caught me and I ran to the pc looked the trailer up on youtube hoping to find out what the name of the song is Lol.......
