We were just village kids who initially saw Numpton as some great Metropolis,as were some of the other musicians such as Social Disease and The Sydromes. We were amazed initially that people we didn't know came to the shows and actually liked us! Happy days! Is there anymore of this stuff out there?
Who can forget In The Mood With The NMC Big Band Sound, or The Alternative Lady Di Evening which included such demented acts as Loaf Of Bread,Sylvo And Desmond and Wolfgang Dietrich Dorff? The crazy thing was that you could put on events in the week and people would still turn up.We were dead young, initially just a garage band influenced by 77 punk, Joy Division, The Stooges and Hawkwind among others, yet still I think quite fresh, but back then it was still possible to be original.
Gigs at the Lion around this time were great -there was still very much a punk DIY attitude-you could literally get up and do it! One practice, hey we're aband let's do a gig! The NMC really did kickstart a scene in Numpton and in those early days there were some great bands I particularly liked Bullets For Silver and White Furry Rabbits. You used to get insane jam session(usually involving members of The Workshop although most members were also in other bands) and truly anarchic events. Great!
The title on the CD re-issue shows the same title error. It should read ;- Funk in B Major - Check out Northampton under Glass CD re-issue available through Spiral Archive Records Northampton for some great bands!!
The Black Lion pub was amazing in its support for all sorts of new and experimental acts - there was a real spirit of adventure, belonging and carving out your own space. happy days!
I used to crash a bunch of unlikely news stories together to make the lyrics of songs I was 'writing'. In this case it was something to do with 'the Ayatollah', Pandas being lent from China to London Zoo but not mating, and a nasty road accident involving a lorry. The 'why don't you call?' bit was probably something to with unrequited love. we were only 17 or 18 after all!
The title is not quite right. It was called 'Funk in B Major' for reasons which elude me 30 years or so on. Steve on lead guitar, my bro Rik on vocals, Alex on Bass, Rob on drums, me on guitar.
