Reflective and whimsical, Ian Hunter reminiscing in his insouciant way. Their last UK hit, only reaching number 41, but a belter nevertheless. Still have this on vinyl .....great post of a vastly underrated song. Thanks!
Bender actually did the basic guitar track for "Saturday Gigs" just as Mick Ralphs did for "Roll Away The Stone" - Ronno played over him just as he played over Ralphs. Weird how Hunter did things.
Bender was the man - great in Spooky, Stealers Wheel, Mott and later Widowmaker.
Cut my teeth on Mott the Hoople in 73', unforgettable. Uriah Heap was to be the back up band, they canceled and BloodRock took their place. Always nice to know Mott is still appreciated. "Spread the Love"
Thanks nonoman290...this takes me back. Mott were as honest rock n roll as you could get..kinda Ray Davies-ish this one. Can't wait to see Mr. Hunter on Oct 3rd in Glasgow ! Thanks again mate.
Brilliant!! I have absolutely nothing original to say here only that I agree with shelly10538 about Mott not being recognised according to their worth, this is also my own favourite song, I love the line "...its all a game, a grown up game". Dingin' as we say where I come from.
@DAVIDDOWNEY23 You may not know they got album of the year in 73 or so. So, they did get good play in the US, but I agree. Remeber, they split and became Ian Hunter and Mick Ronson, and Bad Company. So, that said, they got more air play under different names. Shows the talent doesnt it?
@DAVWAVE Thanks for the info. I noticed your msg to shelly10538. My favourite band is/was Queen, so there does seem to be a pattern in the taste in music of most of the commentators. As far as i know the male member of Roxette is a big Mott fan , but whether you choose to see that as a compliment i don't know...

Queen backed MTH in the mid 70s were all good friends. Brain May, freddie and Roger taylor all featured on Ian Hunters solo album All American Alien Boy. Listen to the track "You nearly did me in".

@rocktenniscat Yup, I saw them many times, once as headliners with Queen as the opening act. By then Grosvenor was playing lead. They could have taken over the world. I'm sure Ralphs was a spark for May's wonderful style.
@gguitarlizard - oops, replies just stopped showing up in my email inbox from Youtube - just all of a sudden. So, replying 3 months later. I am so happy for you that you got to see them. 'Wish I'd been able to catch Mott in the UK recently. Cheers from Canada
The last single, Ronson clearly heard on this. 'Was really the start of the Hunter/Ronson era. I saw them several times.(not Mott) Not really a Mott The Hoople recording, as we knew them, but a great record.SSSSsssssssssssss
Wonderful, I was at some of the Saturday gigs, Hunter is a great songwriter obviously, Ralphs is one of the nicest blokes you'll ever meet, Ronson was a waay stylish player (check out the ''Ian Hunter'' solo album - brilliant). Always played the coolest guitars too. A real English Rock 'n' Roll band - Hunter's legendary biography paints a perfect picture of the era & the egos, up's & down's of the band. Iceout is a pathetic rude, ignorant tosser who obviously wasn't there back in the day.
Sucks that these guys never achieved the fame they deserve. I think they're right up there with Queen, T. Rex, and Slade. Although I have to say, Slade are just about on their very own level. If you check out how long they were together and how much output of great songs and tv and film performances. Literally nobody knew who Mott the Hoople was in the USA in the mid 1980s. I only discovered them because I researched them after seeing All the young dudes on a K-tel type compilation album.
They should be bigger than they are by far. I don't understand it. They are so underrated it makes me feel alienated from the masses because I am completely dumbfounded that I can think their music is so perfect and special, yet, so many just seem to not care about them at all. It's the same way I've always felt about ELO.

nonoman is a fucking queef bag he takes it up the ass because hes a faggot and what the fuck is this??? this is so terrible, i couldnt begin to tell you how terrible this music is...are you smoking crack and then popping acid to make this sound somewhat decent?? fuck this queef bag.
@shelly10538 Well, my friend, and I say that because your list of bands would make you my instant friend! I loved T-Rex, Queen, and Mott, in close to that order. Saw them all, which was a feat considering I lived in Kansas. Slade, I liked, but they did not become a fav of mine, but loved some of there stuff at the time. And honestly, they do have some unreal big hits.

i became very nostalgic for 73 when this song came out in 74. musically and fashionwise, 74 in essense was a nondescript year compared with 73.
