  • Ariel Bender and Mick Ronson were both great, Mott was always a really good band

  • going back to the 1960s and 1970s every jethro tull east coast USA appearance first contained bon bons by mott the hoople... two-fer-one bonus. felt like we were all in a great conspiracy of great music... and we were

  • Reflective and whimsical, Ian Hunter reminiscing in his insouciant way. Their last UK hit, only reaching number 41, but a belter nevertheless. Still have this on vinyl .....great post of a vastly underrated song. Thanks!

  • one of their songs, very special!!!!!

  • Bender actually did the basic guitar track for "Saturday Gigs" just as Mick Ralphs did for "Roll Away The Stone" - Ronno played over him just as he played over Ralphs. Weird how Hunter did things.

Bender was the man - great in Spooky, Stealers Wheel, Mott and later Widowmaker.

  • I love this song !

"And then we went to Croydon" - one of my favourite rock'n'roll lines of all time.

  • @DOGDICE01 You needed to be at the Greyhound mate ;)

  • Cut my teeth on Mott the Hoople in 73', unforgettable. Uriah Heap was to be the back up band, they canceled and BloodRock took their place. Always nice to know Mott is still appreciated. "Spread the Love"

  • Majestic!

  • Thanks nonoman290...this takes me back. Mott were as honest rock n roll as you could get..kinda Ray Davies-ish this one. Can't wait to see Mr. Hunter on Oct 3rd in Glasgow ! Thanks again mate.

  • @johnmckinlay67 no problem my good friend. i hope you have a great time at Glasgow

  • Under-rated band. I discovered them when Freddy Mercury died in 90 and that was because Ian Hunter played All the young dudes

  • I love this man, such great songs and lyrics, very underated. His songs still bring tears to my eyes

  • Brilliant!! I have absolutely nothing original to say here only that I agree with shelly10538 about Mott not being recognised according to their worth, this is also my own favourite song, I love the line "...its all a game, a grown up game". Dingin' as we say where I come from.

  • @DAVIDDOWNEY23 You may not know they got album of the year in 73 or so. So, they did get good play in the US, but I agree. Remeber, they split and became Ian Hunter and Mick Ronson, and Bad Company. So, that said, they got more air play under different names. Shows the talent doesnt it?

  • @DAVWAVE Thanks for the info. I noticed your msg to shelly10538. My favourite band is/was Queen, so there does seem to be a pattern in the taste in music of most of the commentators. As far as i know the male member of Roxette is a big Mott fan , but whether you choose to see that as a compliment i don't know...

  • Hanoi Rocks "In my darkest moments" and "Dead by christmas" :)

  • Queen backed MTH in the mid 70s were all good friends. Brain May, freddie and Roger taylor all featured on Ian Hunters solo album All American Alien Boy. Listen to the track "You nearly did me in".

  • Queen baked MTH in the midey were all good friends. Brain May, freddie and Roger taylor all featured on Ian Hunters solo album All American Alien Boy. Listen to the track "You nearly did me in".

  • Thanks for a great trip !!!

  • I'm surprised such a Beatles fan got hip to Ian. Cool. Rock on!

  • i became very nostalgic for 73 when this song came out in 74. musically and fashionwise, 74 in essense was a nondescript year compared with 73.

  • Something tells me Brian May listened to Mick's playing a LOT. Both are great players....DR. Brian May now, and poor Mick, RIP.

  • Well said

  • @rocktenniscat Yup, I saw them many times, once as headliners with Queen as the opening act. By then Grosvenor was playing lead. They could have taken over the world. I'm sure Ralphs was a spark for May's wonderful style.

    See ya'

  • @gguitarlizard - oops, replies just stopped showing up in my email inbox from Youtube - just all of a sudden. So, replying 3 months later. I am so happy for you that you got to see them. 'Wish I'd been able to catch Mott in the UK recently. Cheers from Canada

  • Poor sound quality, im gonna upload a version with hopefully better sound and maybe the other version called ''Saturday Kids'' too. Great song!

  • 'and then we went to croydon !' gotta love it!

  • in my opinion this is motts finest song

was at hammersmith on the friday + when they did this ya could say i felt just a bit emotional

  • i was there on monday ... amazing gig !!

  • great song , alwayx loved it , thank you man !

  • Hammersmith Tommorrow!!!!!!!!!!!! And Saturday!

  • love this track havent heard it for years

  • tickets 12 / 6 p, cheep at half the price

  • The last single, Ronson clearly heard on this. 'Was really the start of the Hunter/Ronson era. I saw them several times.(not Mott) Not really a Mott The Hoople recording, as we knew them, but a great record.SSSSsssssssssssss

  • Wonderful, I was at some of the Saturday gigs, Hunter is a great songwriter obviously, Ralphs is one of the nicest blokes you'll ever meet, Ronson was a waay stylish player (check out the ''Ian Hunter'' solo album - brilliant). Always played the coolest guitars too. A real English Rock 'n' Roll band - Hunter's legendary biography paints a perfect picture of the era & the egos, up's & down's of the band. Iceout is a pathetic rude, ignorant tosser who obviously wasn't there back in the day.

  • But then we went to Croydon!

  • Ballad of Mott, one of the best!

  • Whats the song that goes

"We changed our name,in search of fame, to find the midas touch"???

    Need to find it!!!

  • Ballad of Mott the Hoople.

    Enjoy your Tuesday!

  • Thank you. Its Wednesday in New Zealand well 11.59pm

  • Sucks that these guys never achieved the fame they deserve. I think they're right up there with Queen, T. Rex, and Slade. Although I have to say, Slade are just about on their very own level. If you check out how long they were together and how much output of great songs and tv and film performances. Literally nobody knew who Mott the Hoople was in the USA in the mid 1980s. I only discovered them because I researched them after seeing All the young dudes on a K-tel type compilation album.

  • yeah i agree

  • Wait... they had UK number ones... they aren't completely obscure.

  • They should be bigger than they are by far. I don't understand it. They are so underrated it makes me feel alienated from the masses because I am completely dumbfounded that I can think their music is so perfect and special, yet, so many just seem to not care about them at all. It's the same way I've always felt about ELO.

  • We want to listen to his music, ice, not bum him

  • Absolutely.SSSSSSSSSsssssssss

  • Lighten up, Mate. I guess you don't remember, "SATURDAY GIGS", but "WE DO." What do YOU think is so bloody good, Ice?SSSSSSSsssssssssssssssssss

  • @shelly10538 You can read up quite a bit on Rex, Bowie, Mott, etc....lots of good info out there.

  • @shelly10538 Well, my friend, and I say that because your list of bands would make you my instant friend! I loved T-Rex, Queen, and Mott, in close to that order. Saw them all, which was a feat considering I lived in Kansas. Slade, I liked, but they did not become a fav of mine, but loved some of there stuff at the time. And honestly, they do have some unreal big hits.

  • Mmmmm. Sweet.

  • Ian Hunter is up there with Bowie, Bolan, and Lou Reed. Great song!

  • check out Generation X's Promises Promises - a great re-working of this track

  • The Mott finale. The finishing touch (colophon) to a great band

  • QUALITY SONG

  • sounds like david bowie, i like it

  • David wrotte some songs to them

  • RECORDED ONE (1) BOWIE TUNE, offered sufferget city they turned it down and recorded "DUDES" instead.

  • It was arranged and produced by Mick Ronson who was their guitarist at this time.

  • So sad they never got the recogniton, but Ian carried on and keppt it alive.

  • i've got my tickets for the re-union, and i can't fuckin' wait!

  • Yes ,but they have just reformed.

  • Wasn't this the last Mott single.

  • Excellent song, and Mick's on guitar, and what a pity tv performance of it (Top Of The Pops) is presumably lost/wiped...

  • Mick Ronson playing guitar!

  • thanks so very much.............mott rocks

  • Thanks for adding this...love "The Hoople" album.
