  • wye aye man this is a classic

  • Ah, being that my Dad comes from County Durham, this is a very sentimental song for me!

  • Regardless of lyrical interpretation this jam hits home, typical Knopfler obscure meaning but far from obtuse! The guitar phrasing, as always, is right there, Long Live And Run, Mark Knopfler! Keep settin' up, I'll do my best to knock "em back! Thanks to: You Tube for the space, Mark By God Knopfler, and to shindiggers everywhere: Thank You for lettin' me be myself again(Thank You Sylvester Stewart) now let us Rock On! Why haway....translates as WELL COME ON

  • Why are videos always,ALWAYS fast cut?

  • We had a similar-ish migration from Appalachia to Northern industrial towns here in the US. In Cincinnati, the joke was 'Readin', Riting', and I-75 North to Norwood Lateral.'

  • I thought the one after was a nive tribute to Pat Roach tho :)

  • *nice

  • WERAN WERAN¡¡¡¡

  • j.j. cale style:)

  • You're slightly wrong, mate. The general agreement is that a Geordie is someone who was born and raised "within spitting distance of the River Tyne". That includes Newcastle, Gateshead (as shitty as it is), North and South Tyneside.

You're right about Northumberland and further south though. They're not Geordies in the slighest.

  • tranquille,reposant ...apaisant agréable

    bref =)

  • great tune. Love the "Maggie's farm" reference.

    MAGGIE MAGGIE MAGGIE

    OUT OUT OUT

  • its alright she is a goldfish now, god at work!!

  • hiya, spruce! Transplanted Texan livng in Gateshead. Had to learn mesel Geordie in a hurry, let me tell you. LOL Married me one. You'll never meets anyone like em. Best of the English lot. Tell it like it is and don't take no shite. Couldn't've have picked a better place to settle.

  • Texan?! Wow, talk about 'Fish out of water'.

I'm only kidding, it's just I can't imagine a weirder cultural crossover. Like a New Yorker settling in Devon...

  • Times are tough in Geordieland still, pet.

  • Thank you - good stuff.

  • 1:) A Geordie is a person born/living in or around Newcastle, a city in the north of England in the county of Teeside. Geordie-land is the said area.

2:) "Why aye man" is a phrase commonly associated with the area. As I am not a Geordie, I don't know what it exactly means, but all around the north of England and Scotland, the word "Aye" is another word for "Yes".

  • Aye man!

I'm a West Coast Scot, but as far as they told us on here "why aye man" should sound like "well yes man" (think this is literal) or "definitely yes man" (the meaning).

I'd go like "Och aye man!"...

Geordies sound Scottish to most southern Englishmen, they sound definitely English to us! Aye, they actually have something in common with us up here, like Englishmen attempting to speak Scots (now they'll kill me!), their accent is an extreme version of a northern English accent.

  • why aye man means well....ermmm...its like yes..but with alot more emphasis

  • really? I thought why aye man meant like a tribal priest of the native americans, you know, like a shaman.

  • no... it means "yes of course"

  • No its means ...yes of course

  • ITS A JORDIE SONG!

  • ...yes we know...GEORDIE...

  • This song is about Scottish workers in Germany, but you don't see anything from Germany in the video. :-(

Well when I look out of my window I can see Germany. It looks a bit red today, don't know what it is ;-)

Got to listen to another Mark Knopfler song now. Byebye friends

  • Scottish workers?!? geordie workers idiot

  • Geordies are from Northern England, right? Thought they were Scottish

  • The song actually tells the story of the migrant british workers of the 1970s/80s who went across to germany to find work. It's actually the story of the geordie workers in the Tv series Auf Weidersehen Pet!

  • Fine, thanks.

It were helpful if German would be the universal language. Maybe we could write a petition to the UN? Wikipedia states that the Geordie dialect is mainly influenced by the German language. So I thought it would be a good idea to start my search for supporters for the petition with you Geordies.

  • nope northern england Lol

just got the slightest hint of scottish dialect. AYE MAN

  • Shit son, you summed me up in one. You are so amazing. Are you god or something? I am now going to go and rethink my whole life for this insightful comment.

    Ha.

    2 Things.

    Punctuation please.

Shoot yourself, soceity doesnt need you're input.

  • julianrossi! la ciutad de Newcastle es el unico sitio en Anglaterra donde hay la cosa màs cerca a un dialecto... es un aciento MUY fuerte que por la gente que no es de Newcastle o de sitios cerca es muy sy no impossible entender :)

yo soy de una ciutad a sur (una hora de coche) y me cuesta mucho entender

Why aye (man) es como decir SI oh Claro que si..y el MAN es como decir CLARO QUE SI, hombre!

  • This is a really great song in it's own right, but if your an Auf Wiedersehen, pet fan - sheer magic!

  • this song was used for auf wiedersehen series 3 theme tune awesome

  • I am from argentina and i can`t found an explanetion for the word aye?? why aye man?

en español seria porque AYE! hombre...

    i need some help!

  • "Aye" is "yes" in Scots English.

Word of a Scotsman! Don't know 'bout the Geordie translation. Geordies and Scots are far more different than what you might believe.

Remember, it's got to be pronounced like the letter "I", do not pronounce it any other way...

  • It means the same thing in Newcastle, Liverpool, Ireland and some parts of Wales, and probably a lot of other cities in Northern England besides the two I mentioned.

But Christ knows what Geordies mean when they say "why aye man". They talk funny up there.

  • julianrossi!

  • You can hear a Geordie Accent on him tho.

  • Is German beer really chemical free?

  • Absolutely. :o)

  • Makes me pround to be scottish :D

  • Proud*

  • What's that got to do with anything, this song is about north east England not Scotland.

  • Well done. i really thought that newcastle was in scotland. yeah idiot. its cos mark knopfler is scottish. thats why im proud. idiot

  • "Why aye, man", can be translated as "We are affirming it in no uncertain terms, sir", or "Yes, I definitely mean it, friend"

  • Haha :D

  • Doesn't the Geordie accent depend on what part of Tyneside a person comes from? The expression Why Aye in the song sounds alright to me and I was brought up in Walker.

  • So, are you telling me that in Newcastle means: "Oh, why man"...or what else ?

  • I don't agree there like, sorry! You can clearly hear him saying 'WHY', I have maximum respect for Mark Knopfler, but he should have spent more time up here.

  • Yeah, totally. Not that Mark Knopfler was born in Newcastle or lived most of his life in Newcastle or anything ¬_¬.

Dialect changes. While you may think that the saying is "Whey" this obviously originates from the word "Why".

  • Mark Knopfler was born in Glasgow and only lived in Newcastle from the age of 9 to his late teens.

"Whey" has nothing to do with the word "Why",

Example: "Whey whadda ya ganna de aboot it?"

Translation: "Well what are you going to do about it?"

"Whey" is a slang word for "Well", any true Geordie knows and says it on a daily basis!

  • Can I just say this? Geordies DON'T say 'Why Aye', they say 'Whey Aye' it's a slang term for saying 'Well Yes', this was a huge mistake by Mark Knopfler, but it seems to have went unnoticed, a true Geordie would know how to say it right!

  • So? It may be spelled "Why" in the title, but he's clearly saying "whey" in the song.

  • hi i`m from germany and don`t quite get what he`s singing about. Is he referring to guest workers with the "economic refugees"? Because afaik there weren`t many guest workers from the UK here, they came from sountries like Italy and Turkey.

The "German beer is chemical free" line is great though because it`s true (thank god) :)

  • It was used as the new theme tune to a tv show called 'Aufweidersen pet' which came out in the 70's about precisely that - in the 70's there were a lot of brits in germany for that exact reason

  • ok thanks. i guess they just went back when the economic situation in the UK improved again unlike the south Europeans might be that that`s why i never heard of them before.

  • quality song .theme for Auf weidersen pet too :P the newer ones obv :P

  • WHY AYE MAN!!!!!

  • when i saw mark friday this song got the crowd crazy!

  • I like the video itself - it's quite artistic =]

  • We're affirming it in no uncertain terms, sir!

  • gan on mark lad

  • the best!!!!!!!!!!!

  • What's the meaning of WHY AYE MAN????

  • It means yes man

    lol

    so just yes

    Aye = Yes,

Why Aye = Like Of course yes...

Man = just what we say lol

  • why aye man! ;)

geordie land the fucking place to be!

  • WHY AYE MAN!!!!!

  • I LOVE THIS SONG!!

The part where Tim Healy shouts 'Why Aye Man!' gives me goosebumps.
