Oh crap. It's been so many years since I heard this song that I remembered the tune but not the words -- until I heard "Should you go first ...." and they came flooding back to me ... along with the tears.
My Dad died last June, leaving my Mom (and the rest of us) behind. They'd been married over 65 years.
Excuse me, I have to go find some tissues, LOTS of tissues.
the love of my life was my grandmother. she was always there for me, each step i took, and i know that she is waiting for me 'beyond the sunset'. thank you so much for putting this on here.
I am seventy years old and just a step away from leaving this old world, But If my wife of fifty years would go first I don't know what I would do with out her. She is still my sweet heart and always will be!
God is so good to give us someone to love and be with all of our life, waiting just beyond the sunset with love. Carl Pope
My Dad died in July 31, 1966 and my Mom July 31, 2006 she played this song for 40 yrsto the day. She waited eveyday to follow him down that road. God bless you both.
I don't mean to sound like a hill billy goat but the meaning of the song follows the words not the singer. If you don't like this rap there is plenty of other rap you can listen to that dubious soul brothers use racism to complain about racism because that kind of rap appeals to racists victimized by racism. Dig?

Hank Williams created most of his songs by experience in his life or what he really felt or was like inside. He truly told his heart in his songs and many of them still are listened my all today. I wish all to share with friends and ask them to help live the King of Country's legacy.(Hiram King Williams will be in my heart longer than life will be with me, God bless you Hank.)
This man was nothing more than a racist who took songs written and perfromed by a minority knowing they wouldnt get airplay and then sanatized them inot his fundamental christian ideologies tht plague the world today
@noreexic You are VERY ill-informed, to say the least. The VAST MAJORITY of the songs Hank Williams performed were of his own creation. As common as it was in his day, and him being from the rural south, I don't doubt he was racist. But a song thief? I don't think so. I think YOU should be banned from youtube.
@midougch23 if there was no little richard there would have been no pat boone, and yes he has been noted for not only racist remarks but homophobic ones aswell right up to the present
@noreexic hey asshole, Hank had over 2,000 black people at his funeral and was not even close to a racist as many other southerners were at the time, a black man by the name of Tee-Tot taught him just about everything he needed to learn to become a performer, unlike you you rotten piece of dumb shit
Were you born a moron or is this something you developed on your own? You talk out your ass because your lying mouth knows better. Sounds like if there is a racist here, it is you.
A man really close to me passed away about a week ago. This was a his favorite song. He was a true farmer, kind hearted... He was my best friend... at 80. As for me, I'm only 15. I miss him more than anything. This song was playing at his service. The last time I saw him... he was humming along to this tune. It was painful to watch. But, I know he's happier now. I can't stop crying. <3
I was watching film about a Worlds' Fair sponsored event in Moscow in 1959 recently on the Documentary Channel. One of the gals who worked the event said the occasional Russian, after viewing exhibits of American ingenuity and progress, would claim: "Yes Yes...But Where Is Your Culture? You Have NONE in America."
Appearently, they never got the chance to hear Hank Williams.
When I was a kid I bought this album from the bargain bin at Woolworth's for $0.25 after seeing the movie, "Your Cheatin' Heart." I wore this album out. The rest of my family thought I was nuts because I needed a Hank Williams fix every day from about age 7 until 10.
if u dont mind me ask how old r u? im only 18 but i grew up with it bc my dad grew up with and yea its just passed down my dad is about 45 or 44 but its just this is a really interesting comment u made not sure why?
@fftl1827 I'm 53 yrs old. I once heard Dion in an interview on Fresh Air, and he grew up among other Italian descent families in NYC, and was also the only person he knew who listened to Hank. When he was in his early teens he could perform about 75 songs by Hank. He sang one on the show, and I've never heard anyone do a Hank song so well.
Whoever wrote this song was a fantastic songsmith. The lyrics just cut you to the quick and bring back some many memories...I bet singers in this day and age would give their right arm for a song of such quality.
This was the one song my father had played at his funeral, said it was for my mother. It is a great song by a legend but very hard for me to listen to...... I miss you father

my grandpa recently passed away from cancer and this song was played at his funeral. he loved my grandma so much and left her behind. I cry every time i hear it and i think of him and how much she misses him.
@amberl519 hi... my grandfather just passed away on the 31st of October. We also played this for his song at his wake. And i know that its going make me think of him every single time I hear it. This is a very beautiful song.
It took guts for a honky tonk singer to go about face and do these types of songs. I have read these were the types of songs Hank liked best, and the ones he would have chosen to focus on as a writer. Trouble is, they did not make much money, but they sure were beautiful.
I loved this song since I was a little girl. I'd like for this song to be played at my funeral (along with a few others). This is one of my favorite Gospel songs.
Preparing to leave my love of 54 years in the foreseeable future, this song tells it all. God Bless
