  • where is slash? O.o

  • where is slash? O.o

  • Any list that puts The Edge ahead of David Gilmour is an absolute steaming pile of bullshit.

  • @imhamish No kidding. I bet half the people that are watching this video can play better than The Edge

  • @imhamish Completely agree! David Gilmour is so much better! I think he deserves to be way higher on this list. The top 10 isn't that amazing either to be honest.. But i am satisfied with John Frusciante's position :)

  • The 2011 list has Keith Richards 4th, so I don't know what everyone is complaining about!

  • Any guitar list is subjective..... There's no truth to music, its how it makes YOU feel. Some dudes like heavy metal, some country etc. I think Rolling stone might do better to say that this is the most influential list of guitarist.

My bias is towards Duane Allman, I don't think there was anyone quite like him. But then again that's an opinion not a fact of life

  • @xXxDriftingCowboyxXx

    Nicely put. :)

  • where the hell is SRV????

  • @20stam ...number 7

  • @20stam did you even watch the video?

  • Whats the point of making such a list? The taste is divided as always. And putting Kith Richards at nr 10 at a top 100 ought to be a crime! The man is a great songwriter not a guitarist. Where is people like: Richi Blackmoore, Johnny Winter in that top 10?

  • This list is all CORRUPTED

  • Omg This list is so fucking RETARD

  • What !!!!!!!! ... Jimmy Page is the 2nd Best of the WORLD

  • Where's Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Saul Hudson(SLASH), Tom Morelo, Eric Jhonson and, John Petruccci??? Where are they???

  • i think steve vai is now my new favorite c:

  • I dont think anyone could touch Duane Allman. Not even Jimi... Duane became the greatest slide guitarist ever within 2 years after picking one up. He played with all the big name musicians at the time as well.

After listening to Jimi's record Duane said he loved Jimi's music but he could do everything that Jimi could. Duane's tone and rhythm wasn't just about mind blowing speed. There was feeling behind it. Which is why a lot of the guitarist like Vai aren't mentioned.

  • These lists are worthless. Who's to say who's better than the other? Different styles, completley different genres, blues, rock, acoustic, classical, etc.. No Vai, Satriani, but Joan Jett makes it? (not knocking Joan but hardly one I would consider one of the greats)

  • I hate SRV,stuck up his own arse.Just a rip off, a phoney.He has technique,but no SOUL

  • Slash???

  • Two words...Gary Moore.

  • @kensolar69 Leave it out,fast but not good.No SOUL

  • no slash???? jimmy at number 9????? no Joe Perry??? WTF

  • And Gilmour is WHERE?

  • lou fucking reed at 52.....all he plays is fucking shit just take a look at ''lou lou'' this is a load of shit wheres marty friedman guys like him

  • Seriously, I'm so sorry if I'll be rude, but who cares about this ridiculous in awful way magazine? For what they do all this articles and lists about who is better?

  • Clapton is so laid back, it owns.

  • They did a new list. And got it wrong again.

  • no PRINCE?

  • It's funny when they mentioned Robert Johnson on this list. During guitar lessons, the teacher was shocked of my style on the acoustic guitar. He's claims that I'm the resurrected 30s blues guitarist especially Johnson due the sliding, rhythm and the feeling of the music. Pretty odd since I never heard his music but was very fond of the true meaning of the blues. I feel like one since my life is basically "myself and the guitar against the world"

  • John Frusciante = life

  • R U FUCKING CRAZY

    4.Joe Satriani

    3.Eric Jhonson

    2.Eric Clappton

    1.EDDIE VAN HALEN

  • @MegaRock1234 lol

  • @MegaRock1234 HAHAHAHA van halen at number one... good joke dude.

  • BTW glad to see Jimmy isnt number 1 XD. But 9 is a bit harsh, I'd say he's number 3.

    1. Jeff Beck

    2. Jimi Hendrix

    3. Jimmy Page

    IMO! Dont rage!

  • Should be renamed rock guitarists :/

There a shit tonne of spanish guitarists that have incredible skill. I prefer Rock, but heres a serious shout out to all the spanish guitarists

  • And Rory Gallagher?

  • What kind of shitty list is it? Where is David Gilmour?

  • this is the same rag that had karen Carpenter ahead of John Bonham for drummers, the only useful purpose Rolling stone has is if you run out of toilet paper you have something to wipe your rear end with

  • A list like this immediately loses it's credibility when excluding John Petrucci.

  • -.- why 59 and 60...

  • Trey at 73 is bullshit listen to some 97

  • I don't know anymore. There are guitarists everywhere. I can agree with Page, Clapton, Duane, & Hendrix. Berry and Johnson were great songwriters. Keith Richards in the top ten is laughable. Where is Eddie, Al Di Meola, Paco, Eric Johnson, Steve Howe. Everyone has different tastes. The true virtuosos probably don't care anyway.

  • What a crock of shit that list is. B B King ahead of Clapton? LMAO. I see Jerry Garcia is high up on the list but Kurt Cobain is ahead of Jerry? R U Fn High on Crack-rocks? I like Kurt but Cmon now. Angus Young is @ the bottom of the list? * Takes a big shit & wipes his ass with this Rolling Stone top 10 guitar list * How did Chuck Berry make top ten???

  • Rolling stone today has no credibility they haven't for years. This was David frikks personal picks anyway.

  • Some time ago Guitar Player International placed Edward van halen and Jimi Hendrix the two most important and influential guitarist of All-time! That is most certainly correct its not even arguable.

  • You know it's a bad list when Angus Young is 96, Eddie van Halen is 70 and Slash isn't even on da list!!!! >:(((((((

  • TREY AT 73???????? WTFFFFF. AT LEAST JERRYS OK IN HIS PLACE.

  • 39. Brian May :). You missed him.

  • Chuck Berry! Finally!

  • mark knopfler should be there , his finger picking style is unique also pete townshend , johnny marr?????

  • black people used to be talented

  • Blues everywere

  • I guess you have to be dead to be the best, at least according to Rolling Stone. Lists like this

are meaningless. You have to be more specific, like 10 greatest classic rock guitar players.

And even then,it's all subjective. To me the two greatest classic rock guitar players are

Clapton and Hendrix. Not because they're better than everybody else but also because of

their contributions to classic rock guitar playing. A better list would be Favorite Top Ten Guitar Players

  • I think they made a mistake... Eddie Van Halen and Kurt Cobain should be switched around haha.

  • what a joke

  • there's no such thing as the best guitarist as long as this is not a lap race with equal parameters in mind. can't compare clapton to hendrix and page etc. such lists are non-sense to me. and most of the time players decide whos the best of all time by those who inspired them. so I say where the fuck is billy f. gibbons???

  • Such a bad list...If the list wasn't so biased the top five would be #1. Jimi Hendrix #2. Eddie Van Halen #3 Jimmy Page #4. David Gilmour #5. Dimebag But honestly that would be the least biased top five however in my opinion my list based on my favorite guitarists would be #1. John Frusciante #2. Tom Morrelo #3. Joe Satriani #4. Steve Vai #5. Jimmy Page But those are my opinion based on my tastes and style, and would never be the top ten for the rolling stones because they are idiots
  • where is TREY ANASTASIO AND JERRY GARCIA....what the friggety fuck man

  • jimi's jonny be good is one of the best live acts, the solo's are crazy , to bad issabella's the example here

  • Probably the right guitarists, just the wrong order. And that's the top 4.

  • this list is wack!

  • Johnny Marr !!

  • Where is Django Reinhart?

  • can you all tell that im all perplexed over this list ? were is gary moore ? fuck that dude can shredd lettuce with his guitar ! weres john sykes ? rebel beach ? or dave murray and adrian smith ? they have only sold 75 million albums as a duo.what about matthias jabs and rudolf schenker ? and a REAL biggie JOE SAT ? fuck that dude TEACHES great guitarist.those 8 guys alone can play crop circles around HALF the players on that list alone. im feeling the bile rising.....

  • being a rock drummer for life i cant wait too see how they fuck up the top 100 drummers of all time. who will number one be ? charlie watts ? ringo star ? i think im going to go puke now so i wont have to after that list comes out............

  • @restlessbreed10

Neil Pert would be a good medium between old schoolness and skill

  • this new list is such crap. were all these judges like "super stoned" ? were they even taking this seriously? keith richards #4 ? chuck berry #7 ? where is micheal schenker ? uli john roth ? why is lindsey buckingham 100th ? is what jimi hendrix did in a span of 6 or 7 years surpass what jimmy page accomplished in 45 years ? not a fucking chance in the depths of hell. no longer will i EVER take rolling stone as a serious publication i will replace my script for perhaps mad magazine...

  • Rolling Stone Mag is just a shadow of it's former claim to fame.Yes they got a few correct but they missed out on some real Masters of the craft that seem not to fit in their political box. Do yourself a favor and pick your own.I'll bet you can do a better job of it since your not going loose sponsors or advertisement dollars.......

  • This list is a joke...Who picked out the top 100? Maybe Joe Satriani, he's to modest to name himself?

  • At least it makes more sense than all the others i saw.

  • no buckethead?

  • jesus what a pile of pants is this the same magazine rolling stone that voted steve morse the best guitarist 6 years on the trott why isnt he in the top ten or dave gilmore

  • NO TREY?? List is bunk

  • what about randy rhoads

  • @fender2499 The list is gay. Although Rhoads is my favourite all time guitarist i don't see him getting higher than #8 but at worst he should be #20. Alas, his career was too short and his body of work not voluminous enough (oh but what work it was).

  • 11° kirk hammett????? are U kiddin' me????

where's Steve vai????? EVH shoud be in the top five.......rolling stones magazine, this top ten sucks!!!!

  • Stevie #7!!!!! What group of Dumbfucks came up with this list? Chuck Berry? Are you serious? his playing was amatuer at best. Clapton before Stevie is a Fucking Joke!!! When i hear layla i want to puke! BB king? not even in the top 100

  • "After watching him for 30 minutes I had to leave, so that I would have some sort of confidence left to play guitar" Eric Clapton after watching Stevie Ray Vaughn play live.

  • I don't know how retarded one must be to even start compiling "lists" of great musicians. Obviously as far as intelligence goes, "rock" journalists are far below the level of those dealing with jazz and classical music. I can't imagine a list of "Best classical composers" or piano players…etc. ever. Every person can make their own list according to their own taste and knowledge. But to issue "official" rankings and force them to the impressionable mind of the public....phew

  • Where the hell is Trey Anastasio???

  • @sectorQ66 nobody but Phish fans really think that much of him lolz

  • @allthingsclassicrock I respectfuly disagree. Even may who hate Phish but play guitar give props to Trey Anastasio's technical prowess. These lists are by nature, always flawed. A jazz enthusiast might ask "Where is Joe Paas?", blues enthusiast, "Why no Buddy Guy?", yet, you, and many others may have never even heard of these guys, or have heard them and disliked them. So I'm not going to try and convince you to like Trey, or Buckethead, or P. Gilbert, they all have merit.

  • @stevewatr I agree with you that the list is flawed. Keith Richards in the top 10? For Christ's sake! I just like to poke fun at Phish fans about Trey, more-or-less. It just seems to me that they have kind of cult going on where they absolutely love the guy, more than most other fanboys. So that;s really all it was; as a casual listener i don't really see what the big deal with him is like the fanboys. But, nevertheless most of these guitar players are good that's why they are pro's.

  • @stevewatr or tony emmanuel, or stanley jordan etc etc

  • @UpstairsMaid Yup, Stanley Jordan helps make my point. How do you compare a guy like him, whose 2 hand tapping technique allows him to riff solos over his own rythym, to say Eddy VH. Both pros, both 2 hand tapping experts, and yet so differant.

  • Edward Van halen is the only one who deserves to be on the list.Even hendricks as great as he was ,never had to compete with his own legend. And we can only speculate on what would have been.I will say one thing ,he was way more talented than clapton page and beck.Clapton hasnt inspired anyone in 40 yrs and he gets a free ride.page simply walked off into the sunset.richards and townshend are great song writers but dont come to my mind when I think of a virtuoso.

  • @bgandjsco1 Well, to me only John McLaughlin deserves to be on the list and I'm not sure he's on it at all. What about that? Are you so naive to not know that different people have different tastes? Hence, lists are a bad idea...but probably good enough to raise the sales of a worthless lifestyle magazine

  • Jimmy Page is so much more versatile than Jimi or Eric. Jimmy is riveting to watch, Eric is so mundane.

  • The New RS Guitarists List: 10.Pete Townshend 9.Duane Allman 8.Eddie Van Halen 7.Chuck Berry 6.B.B. King 5.Jeff Beck 4.Keith Richards 3.Jimmy Page 2.Eric Clapton 1.Jimi Hendrix Definitely less sucky
  • How in the world is Keith Richards listed over classic rock guitarists like Mark Knoffler and Rik Emmett? The latter would blow 90% of this list away.Do ur homework Rolling Stone!

  • @aitraining Cause Keith Richards is fucking Keith Richards. Go cry in a corner pal.

  • I don't agree with Rolling Stone's rankings, either, but we need to realize that these types of rankings are highly subjective and not necessarily based on sheer technique. More often than not, they're based on the legacy of the guitarists and how much of an impact they had on rock music as a whole, not just on guitarists. Plus, the writers and musicians who participate in the rankings tend to vote for sentimental favorites or their idols. At least these rankings get people talking....

  • no slash..

  • These lists really need specific guidelines and qualifications, otherwise they will always be 'wrong', 'fucked up', etc......too subjective and way too many different angles.....If you lumped in most influencial, technical skills and overall body of work for example, at least you know what the hell they were thinking....Hendrix, you could argue would be #1, yet 20 other people might have 20 diff opinions......DEFINE IT!!

  • clapton is overrated. an amazing blues player, no doubt, but he never experimented or took the guitar anywhere new.

  • @bonhambaker You should be hung for saying Clapton is overrated.

  • well, it's rolling stone isn't it? wouldn't be surprised if they had john mayer at number one...or britney spears, or bonnie raitt at number one. this is culture, and this is how we dole it out at rolling stone. the guitarist from arcade fire will be number 2 in the next list.

  • Duane Allman ahead of Clapton????

  • John McLaughlin on 49? Are they kidding? Vai, Monte Montgomery, Petrucci, Coryell, Metheny, Knopfler, and many others are out!? A joke bigger than life, this top...

  • I think this top was made after readers' votes.

  • Jimmy Page should be much higher up the list.

  • @weavermomo Rolling Stone just released its new list of greatest guitarists of all time. Jimmy Page is now ranked #2.

  • @weavermomo Oops, sorry. I meant Jimmy Page is now ranked #3, after Jimi Hendrix (#1) and Eric Clapton (#2).

  • Rolling stone mag is a FUCKIN JOKE and aleays will be, they are a bunch of arty farty arse kissers out of touch with the business, Davic Fricke will sell his granny to do an interview and get his hippy fuckface on tv

  • Rolling stone mag is a FUCKIN JOKE and aleays will be

  • i like how they have a video of keith richards playing a song that isnt his i think its freddie kings if im not mistaken could be

  • @prsplayer210 there is so many people on this list that are obviously overrated and not that good, how do you leave alex lifeson of rush out of a top 100 list gilmour should be definitely in the 15, half o these people on the list suck ill say it , kurt cobain blows dick i would kill myself if i sucked that bad dick dale in the 30's? no pat martino, somebody has shitty musical taste and hit up the crack pipe before this list

  • @prsplayer210 To call anyone on that list truly "overrated" is naive. Just because some placements are wrong and some styles aren't your personal preference doesn't take away from their individual innovations and achievements. I see people bitching about Hendrix being number one, which is ludicrous. That man was the single most innovative guitarist of his generation. He shaped modern guitar. You have to look at lists like this objectively. Besides, it's Rolling Stone, so who really gives a fuck?

  • Somebody forgot Mark Knopfler...

  • wheres george harrison?

  • where is Django???!!

  • Where the fucks steve vai?

  • Bullshit this top 10 .....

  • Might as well put my 2$ in... The list is TOTALLY useless. For starters your comparing lead and rhythm players. How do you compare SRV and Keith richards. You need a class for technical player like steve vai, tone players like larry carlton and mark knopfler, Soulful players like Gary moore, BB king. You need a list for acoustic players which might have phil keaggy, tommy emmanuel laurence juber, etc. It's like comparing women. RS editors should play more guitar and STOP comparing greatness!

  • Yeah, right, RS - Cobain at #12.. lol...

  • Although i love love Kurt Cobain no way is he in the top 100 guitarists of all time never mind top 20

  • @starofcctv94 Tell me about it.

  • Albert King?

  • where's blind robert willy lightning lemon pledge?

  • ok Sorry but this list is very naïve for an famous music magazine, and keith richards just sucks, sorry no offense but he is only on the list for the cause of nostaliga, along with jimmy page, but jimmy was still a way way better player and creative player.

  • @jamirosmajicrocks keith richards sucks?...

  • Apparently buddy guy ain't got shit on Keith Richards lol. Wow what a shitty list.

  • Wow I can't believe srv, Stephen stills, frank zappa, Neil young, Tom morello and tons of others are so high on the list. There are many more influential and great guitarists than jack white and Kurt cobain

  • a 'rolling stone list'....where's keith partridge, then?

  • 'rolling stone'...rolling otf. their critics LOVED to use the phrase: "12 bar blues"; whenever you read a critic use that term in a review, you could pretty much assume instanly, the guy didn't know what the fuck he was talking about.

  • LOL LOL - Kurt Cobain is #12?? HAHAHAHAH so funny, shouldnt even be on the list! What a joke.

  • Rightttt... Joan Jett is there but not Brian May.

  • Comment removed

  • Keith Richards? Duane Allman? My cat plays better than them...These are guitar pioneers, showmen maybe, but certainly not the best.

  • @CombatVet65 If you don't think Duane Allman is one of the best you have no appreciation for the guitar.

  • Comment removed

  • Kurt Cobain gets placed ahead of Jeff Beck. This list is irrelevant!

  • WHERE IS SLASH AND JOHN NORUM ??

  • Who thinks Craig Ross is the most underrated guitar player in the world? I saw him live two days ago and he was beast!

  • Compiling such a list is nothing short of short-sighted!!! What can the criteria be? No Carlos Santana?? or Joe Satriani or John McLaughlin??? This is not a list of the top 10 but a list of 10 of the top guitarists. Thanx for the music.

  • I think it's funny that Rolling Stone has NEVER heard of Rush before...

  • HOW THE FUCK IS TREY ANASTASIO 73!?! HE SHOULD BE NUMBER TWO RIGHT AFTER JERRY GARCIA!!!!!!

  • Pete Townshend needs to be ahead of The Edge.

  • Duane Allman's my favourite. Such a gifted player. Technically, Buckethead is leagues ahead of any guitarist around. It's criminal that he's so disregarded/ignored!

  • To be honest ever one of them should not be on the top list. I'd say if you put them all on stage Stevie and Jimi

    Would blow everyone else away.

  • LOL... Mark knopfler 27..serious???

    and Joe Satriani?

    Top guitarist?..Hahaahahahaaaa

  • this ranking sucks, Duane should be n1

  • I think the only reason they give Keith Richards such high marks is that he invented alot of wierd notes and riffs in the early days

  • @roka1961 That's a good point.

  • WHERE IS JOE BONAMASSA IN THIS?! he should be in the top 5

  • Buddy guy hould be in the top ten. BB king and chuck berry are good guitarist but shouldnt bein thetop ten

  • Makes me sad to see Peter Green only make it to the 38th place, sure his time was short in the spot light of the 70's but when he was in that light he gave everything he had and then some! ever hear of a song "As My Guitar Gently Weeps"? yeah that should have been his theme song

  • @clikityclak - my top 10 - Jimi Hendrix !!!!!!!!!!! Carlos Santana , Adrien Belew, Peter Green , John Cippolina, Jerry Garcia ( most of the time) Charlie Sexton , Danny Kirwin , Eric Clapton ( esp 1966-1975) Duane Allman .

  • @clikityclak Wasn't that Clapton and Harrison?

  • @bibhuna

No it was Randy Rhodes and Ted Nugent :P

  • RS's top 100 list is so pathetic I can't even mask my contempt. Nobody is going to 100% agree on all but really? Kurt f----ng cobain is better than Jeff Beck? Am I supposed to accept that? Joni Mitchell is better than Trey Anastasio? Frank Zappa is almost at the 50 mark? Dumb. Neil Young not in top 50? It's all so absurd.

  • Frank Zappa at No 45, Just shows, That Rolling stone readers, No nothing about Great Guitar players.

  • hey just because you can play a thousand notes per second doesnt mean youre a good guitar player, johnny ramone and ed obrien and kurt cobain ar as good any other guitar players

  • 96 - Angus Young

    86 - Tony Iommi

    82 - David Gilmour

70 - Eddie Van Halen and still

    16 - Johnny Ramone

    12 - Kurt Cobain

  • Eddie Van Halen number 70 my ass

  • I love nirvana but Kurt cobain shouldnt have been in the top twenty,

he was influential, but not a great guitarist, he was a great simplist and was great at timing for shifting from loud to quiet, but thats about it.

Also why the fuck does john frusciante always get omited from these lists, he's fucking awesome.

  • @asasas121212Q john frunsciante was number 16

  • This is pathetic as a list of the most influential guitarists. Too many great ones are missing, and entire genres left out. You could possibly call it a list of influential guitar-playing musicians . People like Keith Richards and Curt Cobain have obviously been an inspiration to many, but aren't really brilliant guitarists.

  • @phel21 Keith was a brilliant Rhythm guitarist.

  • @phel21 it is a list of guitar playing musicians is not about the one whos best playing the instrument

  • This Rolling Stone list is the subject of much controversy. It seems almost no one likes it or agrees with it. Keith Richards at #10? Give me a break. Hell he wasn't even the best guitarist for the Rolling Stones let alone in the top 10 of all guitarists. This is one of the worst lists EVER but I'm not surprised as it comes from Rolling Stone, one of the worst magazines of any type ever. Rolling Stone makes it to #1 on the worst magazine list.

  • No Johnny Marr????? I've been playing for 25 yrs and I'm here to say that's bullshit.

  • @wungabunga true dat, even Radiohead are on there. Just saying Marr inspired Knives out...Bullshit.

  • top 10 are all blues guitarists.........nice :)

  • May i ask Where hell is Ritchie Blackmore ``??

This list really sucks evyritng is mess...

  • EVH!!!!!!?????

  • @jackoliverw1 He’s a phoney.

  • What a sick, pathetic joke. No Django? No Parkening? No Greenwood? Oh right a bunch of faggots (and no, I don't mean gay people) made this list. A bunch of faggots who don't understand music. Rolling Stone you are the epitome of lame. Remember when you used to be in touch with what was cool in the world of music? You do? Because I can't.......

  • @JonnyCashmore Greenwood AND O'Brien can be found at #59 AND #60 on the list, respectively.

  • @superclaydude I also mentioned Parkening and Reinhardt......?????? They should be in the top five......BOTH of them. Parkenings' Chaconne from 62 or 63? (can't quite remember) is easily the definitive piece of classical guitar music ever recorded. After recording it (at 18 years old!!!?????!!!!) Segovia (his teacher) declared him the best classical guitarist of all time.......AT AGE 18...19? Ridiculous. Can't remember how old he was, but it was young. Check out the recording.

  • This list is for musically uneducated faggots (no not gay people, faggots!) and should be ignored completely. Any best guitarists list that doesn't contain Django, Chris Parkening or Jonny Greenwood is a pathetic joke. But of course this list comes from Rolling Stone.....What would they know about music?

  • aaaah, your missing Prince

  • 3 out of 10 , well that's much better than ALL the other "10 best guitarist" UT vids. Still moronic.
