After listening to Jimi's record Duane said he loved Jimi's music but he could do everything that Jimi could. Duane's tone and rhythm wasn't just about mind blowing speed. There was feeling behind it. Which is why a lot of the guitarist like Vai aren't mentioned.
These lists are worthless. Who's to say who's better than the other? Different styles, completley different genres, blues, rock, acoustic, classical, etc.. No Vai, Satriani, but Joan Jett makes it? (not knocking Joan but hardly one I would consider one of the greats)

He's claims that I'm the resurrected 30s blues guitarist especially Johnson due the sliding, rhythm and the feeling of the music. I don't agree with Rolling Stone's rankings, either, but we need to realize that these types of rankings are highly subjective and not necessarily based on sheer technique. More often than not, they're based on the legacy of the guitarists and how much of an impact they had on rock music as a whole, not just on guitarists. Plus, the writers and musicians who participate in the rankings tend to vote for sentimental favorites or their idols. At least these rankings get people talking....
These lists really need specific guidelines and qualifications, otherwise they will always be 'wrong', 'fucked up', etc......too subjective and way too many different angles.....If you lumped in most influencial, technical skills and overall body of work for example, at least you know what the hell they were thinking....Hendrix, you could argue would be #1, yet 20 other people might have 20 diff opinions......DEFINE IT!!

I don't know how retarded one must be to even start compiling "lists" of great musicians. Obviously as far as intelligence goes, "rock" journalists are far below the level of those dealing with jazz and classical music. I can't imagine a list of "Best classical composers" or piano players…etc. ever. Every person can make their own list according to their own taste and knowledge. But to issue "official" rankings and force them to the impressionable mind of the public....phew

@allthingsclassicrock I respectfuly disagree. Even may who hate Phish but play guitar give props to Trey Anastasio's technical prowess. These lists are by nature, always flawed. A jazz enthusiast might ask "Where is Joe Paas?", blues enthusiast, "Why no Buddy Guy?", yet, you, and many others may have never even heard of these guys, or have heard them and disliked them. So I'm not going to try and convince you to like Trey, or Buckethead, or P. Gilbert, they all have merit.

@stevewatr I agree with you that the list is flawed. Keith Richards in the top 10? For Christ's sake! I just like to poke fun at Phish fans about Trey, more-or-less. It just seems to me that they have kind of cult going on where they absolutely love the guy, more than most other fanboys. So that;s really all it was; as a casual listener i don't really see what the big deal with him is like the fanboys. But, nevertheless most of these guitar players are good that's why they are pro's.

Edward Van halen is the only one who deserves to be on the list.Even hendricks as great as he was ,never had to compete with his own legend.And we can only speculate on what would have been.I will say one thing ,he was way more talented than clapton page and beck.Clapton hasnt inspired anyone in 40 yrs and he gets a free ride.page simply walked off into the sunset.richards and townshend are great song writers but dont come to my mind when I think of a virtuoso.

I don't agree with Rolling Stone's rankings, either, but we need to realize that these types of rankings are highly subjective and not necessarily based on sheer technique. More often than not, they're based on the legacy of the guitarists and how much of an impact they had on rock music as a whole, not just on guitarists. Plus, the writers and musicians who participate in the rankings tend to vote for sentimental favorites or their idols. At least these rankings get people talking....

These lists really need specific guidelines and qualifications, otherwise they will always be 'wrong', 'fucked up', etc......too subjective and way too many different angles.....If you lumped in most influencial, technical skills and overall body of work for example, at least you know what the hell they were thinking....Hendrix, you could argue would be #1, yet 20 other people might have 20 diff opinions......DEFINE IT!!

Just because some placements are wrong and some styles aren't your personal preference doesn't take away from their individual innovations and achievements. I see people bitching about Hendrix being number one, which is ludicrous. That man was the single most innovative guitarist of his generation. He shaped modern guitar. Might as well put my 2$ in... The list is TOTALLY useless. For starters your comparing lead and rhythm players. How do you compare SRV and Keith richards. You need a class for technical player like steve vai, tone players like larry carlton and mark knopfler, Soulful players like Gary moore, BB king. You need a list for acoustic players which might have phil keaggy, tommy emmanuel laurence juber, etc. It's like comparing women. RS editors should play more guitar and STOP comparing greatness!

Hell he wasn't even the best guitarist for the Rolling Stones let alone in the top 10 of all guitarists. (can't quite remember) is easily the definitive piece of classical guitar music ever recorded. After recording it (at 18 years old!!!?????!!!!) Segovia (his teacher) declared him the best classical guitarist of all time.......AT AGE 18...19? Ridiculous. Can't remember how old he was, but it was young. Check out the recording.
