Think of the C64 games we got that ran in that 64K - how many would never have seen the light of day if the C64 had had 16K like other computers of the day? It would have been easy for Jack Tamriel to leave out the extra memory and make a bit more profit, but he didn't, and because of it we got titles like Alter Ego, Little Computer People, Sentinel, Portal, Gunship and Ultima 1!!!
@Billbill80s hmm judging how much RAM was there back then the commodore 64 had about 64 kB of RAM. and the IBM PC had 16kB so each "Elephant" adds 16kb of RAM so its 16*4=64. :) god im so bored to figure that out.
$600 in today's money is equivalent to $1300. (Google's inflation calculator)
Not exactly cheap. No wonder my parents only bought one piece at a time - One christmas I got the C64. Next christmas I got the 1541 drive. Next christmas I got a printer. Plus a few Atari games.
Technically speaking lower letter k is for kilo (1000), so 64 kB = 64000, and by convention 64 KB=65536, although both had been used as 65536 with computers. Anyway, this distinction wasn't possible for mega and larger so they proposed Ki, Mi etc. which is good imo.
The best are hard drive manufacturers which have been declaring the sizes of disks in MB and GB, not in MiB or GiB, just so it would seem that their drives are somewhat larger.
The Commodore CEO dropped the C64's price rapidly, in order to put Apple, Atari, IBM out of business. It eventually dropped to just $150 in 1985, and it forced Coleco, Texas Instruments, and Radio Shack to give up.
IBM survived thanks to big business.
Apple survived thanks to schools.
Atari survived thanks to its profitable gaming business.

I didn't know you could get a PC with 16k of ram, unless they weren't talking about the 5150 (the original pc) and just some other IBM computer.

@computerfreaq17 If we take 4 gigabytes to be the 'standard' for today it's 268,435,456 elephants. :D

So, the commodore 64 was elephants in it? :o
TheDutchGame 1 year ago
I don't get it. The IBM-PC is 1 depressed-looking blue elephant, and the C64 is 4 depressed-looking blue elephants?
saintaureus 1 year ago 15
@saintaureus the elephant is an animal known for its good everlasting memory.
So the comercial wants to say that the commodore had 4 times the memory capacity of an IBM for less money

I don't want to say something about the memory, the pixel, etc.
I just want to say you that
64 KB = 64000 Bytes
or exactly
64 KB = 65536 Bytes (1024*64)
nicolunacba 2 years ago
actually
64KB = 64000 Bytes
and
64KiB = 65536 Bytes

I got one of these with tape drive for my graduation in 83. Didn't cost anywhere near $600!
I hear they're a collectors item now. Almost bought one from a junk store for $20 a while back just to say I had one.
