Oh: I'm sorry to have to report that our last remaining grandmother dies in San Dimas yesterday. She and Grandpa were the best, weren't they? Strong and always correct, they always knew what should be done about something and gave good advice. I don't know if there will be a service but Pam couldn't find a telephone number for me but I expect that if there is a service I'll find out about it.
Bummer; she must have been near 100 years old. I found some of our Cherokee relatives in Oklahoma: sisters and kin to that Grandmother. Mother's brother Jim is still alive, last I heard. That grandmother had a homestead cabin in the Mojave, where we went to a great many years ago and rode the T-----r's minibikes, got food poisoning, and vomited Tang all night. Ah, fond memories.
@Kargoneth ; "You have native American blood in you?"
Yes; most Americans do. If one's ancestors have been in North America for the past 150+ years, the odds are better than 50% that one has an American Indian ancestor.
It's ironic in some ways that your life has so far turned out to be something that many, many people would love to have done if only they had the GUTS, courage, will power, and money to do. I think that luck plays a big hand but you were ready to do a lot of this when the opportunity came up. You learned more outside of school than in and when opportunities came up, you took them. Most people are too afraid to leap off in to the unknown void.
You know, everytime I watch DPs' videos I go into philosophical mode, I contemplate my life and wonder how or if I can change things.
To RedTortoise: "You come home and do it again tomorrow" - the most depressing thought that runs through my mind every day.
I hate being a drone, marching to the beat of the drum. I love to have the balls to stick a finger up to society but without it I fear I'd fall apart.
As always DP you have what many a man dream of... I doth my cap to you sir.
"You know, everytime I watch DPs' videos I go into philosophical mode, I contemplate my life and wonder how or if I can change things."
cbp, you can go visit your local U. S. Forest Service district office and tell the person there that you want to start volunteering in the forest, do what I do. The USFS needs people who want to break out of the choking city rut, even if only on week ends. Exercise, hard work, great satisfaction, you work with a team of professionals, too.
Very nice. I was born in 1961, so the general appearance of those photos through the years looks very familiar. Thanks for putting all this together in a single video.
"I was with Stephen when he drew it up and sent it for printing. WOW never expected to see that in a vid!"
Way cool! I got the shirt at the land fund booth, many years ago. I do not recall seeing the shirt around here for years: I suppose it wore out and got holes in it. I have Dragonfest shirts going back to 1989.
Do you still attend? I try to get out there every year regardless. Last year we went and abandoned our vehicle outside of Frisco since it died. We just let the tow company take it and we took 5 days getting back to California.
An absolutely beautiful song, accompanied by a perfect photo essay. You've outdone yourself, DP. This makes one sit back and think. Where does it go? Who knows? But it's been worth every second of living it.
I could have gone without the beatings, the shooting, the stabbing, the starvation.... :-) I am convinced that people do not choose the lives they lead: I think people's lives just happen to them.
"This makes one sit back and think. Where does it go? Who knows?"
As we get older we start to realize that so much time has skipped past in what seems like an eyeblink. When I realized that I got the fuck off my chair, stopped watching television, started protesting, making noise, and volunteering to make a difference and get exercise.
Very nice vid, Desertphile. You certainly have gotten around to lots of places over the years. ~ Nice song, too. Or, as the Steve Miller Band (I think) said, "Time keeps on slipping, slipping, slipping into the future."
"It was nice to see the Rice boys when you guys were kids."
I have kept no photographs, no letters, no momentos whatsoever of myself. The only regrets that I have is I threw out all the photographs I took of my travels around the world on business -- Japan, Holland, France, Germany, India, Malasia, Canada, Mexico, so many places that I went to on orders from our government or some fascist Corporate crook, and I never kept a single photograph.
All that brought you to today...be thankful..love the life you had and the life you have now...because it is about the here and now.....this is one of your best vidio's.....thx...made me THINK......Crusaderrabbit..........
Outstanding work, DP. Is this your annual "Who Knows Where.." video? The one you did last your was excellent too. Makes me wonder if it's your birthday?
"And to me-you seem more normal than the normal people."
That's the problem: to fit into society, one must be a bit crazy because society is a bit crazy. The sanest people I've known were those who lived far from other people.
That is currently correct,,, this culture is in its devolutionary stage... you are not however, more than a few others are not, yourself and these are evolving,,,, and thats a joy regardless the occasional damage,,, the price of admission.
"Alas, if given the chance I would roll back the years and live a conventional life."
You mean in the city, in what passes for civilization, the horror of modern life? I think you probably slowly forgot just how shitty life is here. You work and work and for what? You come home to do it again tomorrow. Those unmarried suffer from loneliness, the married suffer from marriage, children, divorce, alimony, child support.... Owning things? You nailed it in "Happiness and the tyranny of things."
"Those unmarried suffer from loneliness, the married suffer from marriage, children, divorce, alimony, child support.... Owning things?"
Yes indeed: you are wise, my friend. :-) In life one must choose the lesser of injuries, and then strive to heal oneself. There doesn't seem to be a "no injury" life one may choose from.
"You work and work and for what? You come home to do it again tomorrow."
I used to do that, not any more. That's the way to die slowly without even noticing it. DP has done things and seen things that a great many people wish they could at least once in their lives, and those same people feel that it's too late for them to do likewise. I volunteer in the forest on most week ends and I want to do more. When I stop working, I'll be in the first 24r hours a day all year around. }:-}

Hi! Yes, the heat shield is there. It's been there for many years, and the black stain is on the heat shield. It appears to be made of "miracle board," like concrete and fiberglass. Maybe it needs another layer. :-)
Hi! The batch of wine was ruined by carelessness on my part: I did not know what I was doing, so I trashed it when I tried to "fine" it (make it clear). It was very annoying.
You mean you would recant some of the philosophy in Going Feral 5? Have you changed your perspective on wilderness living vs the horror of living in modern society, or is it something else that is bothering you?
To me all that you said so far on that makes perfect sense and I despise what passes for civilization and society. I admit I don't have quite the balls you do to take immediate action but I am slowly preparing and saving for it and one day I definitely will live the way you do now.
"You mean you would recant some of the philosophy in Going Feral 5?"
Yes and no; I lament being alone most of my life; I lament being poor; I am distressed at all of the physical damage my body has accumulated due to hard living, and my inability to pay for medical care that I need.
I still insist that what passes for "civilization" is evil and that human beings are much better off "going feral." It's just that I would rather have taken a different path to the freedom I have.
