Chappers i first saw you demo the Marshall class 5 at Marshall head office and have followed your stuff on and off, this demo and your playing is excellent mate i know you sometimes get crap from people but your playing and humor works. On the back of this demo i am going to purchase the HT5R head tomorrow from Andertons Top Job boys, play hard have fun ;0)
@GREGCAROLAN That all depends on what you need personally.
To be honest, with amps like this, I prefer a head. I run a 5 watt Marshall Class 5 head through a Blackstar 2X12 and that keeps me up to paces with my drummer and small gigs.
If you read this and own a Blackstar I AM SORRY! Egnater shits all over this and is by far the best buy for the money.....You know only if you care about tone.....Seriously the tone difference is night and day and it takes pedal like a REAL Marshall. I barely use Effects loops and its is OK not the best but the amp is insane. Get one change the tubes and thank me. Celesiton Heritage G12H30 in the cab.....AMAZING SOUNDS. The clean/grit KILLS THIS! WAAAY KILLS WAAAAAAAYY. Words can't explain.
@noizereduction Egnater Tweaker 15, It was the original tweaker and was so badass they came out with a two channel version in 40 and 88 watts. The 15 watt original is the ORIGINAL Tweaker and known as the tweaker the others are the tweaker 40 and tweaker 88.
@willeng84 Guys like you are the reason why I never bought a tube guitar amp. I check 5W bedroom models for $200 something, then I read amp X is way better for $100 more, then I read amp Y is way better for $200 more. Now I was fixed on the blackstar for $450, even tho it has fixed watt output, at least it's just 5w. And now I'm checking out the Egnaters which are much more expensive, and minimum 15w, which is too much for the bedroom. Close browser, I give up trying to find a nice amp. Again.
@willeng84 If you aren't paid by amp companies, "thank you" I guess. Egnater is a great brand, I'm not saying it isn't. The way you talk insistently and repeating posts saying the same thing does make one think you could be biased. Usually people who aren't biased towards one amp don't keep insisting in one thread that their choice is the BEST, with CAPS! lol
@noizereduction Look, I haven't repeatidly said anything, you asked about my 1 post, I answered and you went off saying I am a dick and people like me cause you to not make up your mind. The reason I feel so sincere is because I read nothing but good reviews, noone said the cleans were sterile and terrible, or that the gain was fizzy, I have alot of equipment, vintage and new. I bought my dad the blackstar for xmas and was so unimpressed I HAD to say something, anything, let people know.
@willeng84 I was expressing my frustration, and your childish, bully reaction really does wonders to make you sound more respectable and knowledgeable about amps /s. The Blackstar might not be the best thing, but at least it seems to sound a little better than the fender super champ XD. Sure, they're completely different price ranges, it's about $200 more than the super champ - and the Egnater would end up being about $100 more than the blackstar. So egnater = more than twice the price of SCXD
@noizereduction I have a lot that I want to buy, like a focusrite saffire, a new acoustic guitar ,etc - but If I do end up getting an amp, I'll go with the fender super champ XD probably, because it's cheap but still has great tone, all tube and dual-ended power with line out and fx loop. The Egnater is more overkill for 2011 when this type of products should be a lot cheaper. Maybe later if I get super picky about my guitar tone.
@noizereduction Thats cool, my reply I didn't feel was childish, I answered your question and you BLAME me for shit......Really how was your reaction not childish??? Im over it as I'm sure you are, just trying to help. Check e-bay for everything. Man I save so much money buying stuff they're its crazy, I wouldn't have been able to afford half the equipment I have. Vintage Fender bassmans, Marshall plexi's, 65' ampeg gemini 1, egnaters and blackstar. Egnater and Fender are VALUE.
@smkonwater23 Really, I bought one for my dad and I myself am an audiofile and a tone freak/fanatic. I own the Egnater Tweaker and got it about 1 month before the HT5R. The HT5 sucks ass. Terrible worst tube amp in that price range FOR SURE. I heard someone say this VHT>Blackstar, Egnater>all of them. And its true and I heard they're Rebel 20 is EVEN MORE EPIC. I changed the tubes in the Tweaker and its just amazing. Not buzzy or fizzy at all. Try it out brother
For about a year now I had plans to buy a Blackstar HT-5...I got rushed into buying a Fender Mustang III (good amp) but...I had to get it refunded because it simply did not have that sound I was looking for.
Chappers you've inspired me to get back in to guitar.. Cant believe ive never heard of economy picking untll now.. Thanks! Currently rockin a 100w jcm 900 which angers my neighbors... Torn between Marshall class 5 and blackstar ht5... Which one do you like better?
@TheSmithr1 HT-5 definitely. The class 5 doesn't have a gain knob, so you still need to crank it to get distortion, and that will probably still anger your neighbours.
Wow, thanks for this amazing review! This amp could really be the perfect amp for my purpose. I have one question though concerning the footswitch. Is it possible to turn the reverb on and off via footswitch?
I like to play alot of blues and such but I like stuff with abit of reverb and abit of o/d when I want it but not like dimebag level :L I've seen on andertons the Blackstar HT5r, and the price is right and it sounds goood on here would you recommend it?? and I like the tube sound :D ps (this is for bedroom and small practice sessions with my singer not for band stuff cos I already have a line 6 spider iv 150 watt ((yes I want a blackstar xD) thanks :D
@mani3k76 Blackstar = tube, cube = best solidstate practice amps you can get.. depends on your goals.. the higher the volume though.. the better the tubes will sound..
I have a bunch of pedals , Boss TU3 , CS3 , BD2 , CE5 and a MXR Carbon Copy Delay . Will the HT-5R have enough headroom & power to handle the pedals WELL ? ..... Jerry
When the HT5C will come out at andertons? The HT5C (according to the blackstar's website) is the same as this HT5R but without reverb (fx loop, 12" speaker ...) \o/
i think i prefer the mic, emulated sounds kinda choked if that makes sense, the mic gives it a lot more roundness, maybe due to the room ambience getting picked up as well?

Lol, it's freaky that I just thought about how epic a blackstar ht-5r would be, and then this video (by one of my favorite guitar players) was uploaded :)
really good style of demo with this one. I think this is your best one yet. you play a variety of tones, with all styles of guitars (strat, tele, paul, etc), and ended with chappers playing a full song using the amp. I'll be honest I watch these demos for just chappers to play and seeing cool new gear, I've honestly never wanted to buy anything you've demoed until this one, and now I really, REALLY WANT ONE!!! Top Quality Demo guys! Seriously, best one yet!
@RobChappers curiozity because i i felt like the chapmann guitars subject was thrown in a storage room. any way keep up the good work king of guitar monkeys. hope that wasn't rude or something.
@RobChappers OY Chappers whats up...i was curious...is this amp good for metal and pinch harmonics? Thanks if you can get back to me on this...its basically the only thing thats keeping me from buying it today lol
Hi, great post. I know the HT-5 fairly well and enjoy the backed off bluesy tones but from what I have gathered elsewhere and here there is more gain on this version of the amp and so I'm wondering whether it's lost some of it's bluesy tones in place of a heavier classic rock feel on the low end of the gain ... What do you think? Many thanks in advance.
@georgebonney Having tried both, I think the HT5R has all the bluesy tones of the HT5 - just with a bit more bass end & reverb. Have a look at about 10 minutes into the video for some nice blues stuff... Cheers, Lee
@AndertonsMusic Thanks, good point. It's quite a dirty blues - I think you can hear the increase in gain (I could be wrong!) but it sounds great either way :-)
Other than watts, how does this stack up to the studio 20?

If the D.I. actually sounds good, that feature with the speaker options is really cool!

MrTomRichy 11 months ago
Hi, great post. I know the HT-5 fairly well and enjoy the backed off bluesy tones but from what I have gathered elsewhere and here there is more gain on this version of the amp and so I'm wondering whether it's lost some of it's bluesy tones in place of a heavier classic rock feel on the low end of the gain ... What do you think? Many thanks in advance.
georgebonney 11 months ago
@georgebonney Having tried both, I think the HT5R has all the bluesy tones of the HT5 - just with a bit more bass end & reverb. Have a look at about 10 minutes into the video for some nice blues stuff... Cheers, Lee
AndertonsMusic 11 months ago
@AndertonsMusic Thanks, good point. It's quite a dirty blues - I think you can hear the increase in gain (I could be wrong!) but it sounds great either way :-)

Anyway, great vid and amp! I watched almost every single video of yours 'cause you are so funny and your playing is amazing!
