Oh jesus christ it amazes me how serious people get over such silly things! >.< a full on debate about the damn program, really?? Go make something pretty on your terragen program, and stop bitching at each other about it -___-
My sister have askin me continously why the sky is blue. I have tryied to explain her it in many ways but she realy understood this after she had seen this video. :)
Well, this hasnt been done with Terragen as this was made in 2005. Also, its quite easy to see the difference. Terragen 2 is way way way more powerful. =)
yeah but Terragen 2 doesn't have the power of creation for the terrain like terragen. But terragen 2 has more power with its shaders. I just wish it rendered wire frames.
@pegleg1992 what year are you living in? Even a houseold PC could render each frame in just a few minutes; a dedicated workstation could do it much quicker.
@LennyRhys You have obviously never used Terragen, please get your facts straight. The typical home computer, based on 2-4gb DDR2 RAM, and an Intel Core 2 Duo E7xxx will probably take a good hour or two per frame. I don't know where I got 5-6 hours from as that is drastically incorrect. However, the rendering will not take simply a few minutes.
@pegleg1992 it depends on the resolution/level of data in each frame. There is one particular terragen animation on youtube and the creator cites 80 frames per hour on his office workstation; terragen is also used as a CPU benchmark in numerous reviews and it takes just 6 minutes to render a very highly detailed 640x480 frame using a quad core CPU, which many people have nowadays.
@LennyRhys I once found the original video of this, resolution was somewhere near 720p if I remember correctly. The standard home computer uses a dual core, not a quad core. Also, I'm not saying that this particular video was rendered on a home PC, as you mentioned it was most likely rendered on a dedicated workstation or maybe even a renderfarm, in which case the render times would be cut down immensely to between 30 seconds and a minute.
Holy shit... i played around with this program years ago making Mars landscapes with green suns etc. It was free back then and now it is even more impressive. I gotta take closer a look at it! I'm glad this program evolved and improved. Brings back memories.
The average terragen 2 render at high quality, for a SINGLE FRAME, can take around 5-10 days on a "Gaming Computer" for home use. Of course, most companies use render farms, so.
I've read several accounts of (Truly photorealistic) T2 Images taking up to a week, but that was several months ago. Maybe they've finally optimized :P
Yeah, I've heard that there were some patches, plus the program is being updated constantly, considering Planetside is currently paying all of their attention to Terragen 2's production right now. So, they keep on building upon the beta and release the updated versions for free.
I've rendered images at 2048x1536 and it took 27 hours. However, that was before optimizations and such... so... probably a lot better. Besides, I'd never make a video at that resolution anyways. 720p HD would probably only take me about 30-45 minutes a frame, if that.
You'll want to purchase the Terragen 2 Deep + Animation package. This will unlock the animation capabilities as well as a free upgrade to the full animation module when it's released. If you're currently using the free version it will also remove all those limitations to your render size and quality.
@clay82es MY first Terragen project I posted here took 2 weeks to render out 700 frames. It's probably the most horrible rendering times of any 3D program I've ever used. The animation isn't matured like other 3D programs.
This program is just unbelievable! A friend of mine told me about it and i downloaded the unregistered version and within 15minutes i can create an astonishing scenery with this very simple terragenn tool. I don't know when the said "terragen2" will be out, free or not, but i sure as hell would like to know more.
This vid and the one with the f-35 and some LOTR compilations are just marvelous.
even though terragen is slow, it has created images many times more impressive than anything Ive seen in Vue and its only in its preview stage. I know vue can create awesome animations and has the solid growth plants it just doesnt compare with the realism yet. Ive only seen a couple of vue images that can compare with terragen
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Terragen 2 sucks, by the time the have the slow rendering problems solved we're probably already using E-on Vue version 9 with ten times better results.

Great video. I waited with such anticipation for TG2, and when it was released, i was amazed at how different the user interface was. I thought, ok, i learned tg1, i can learn this. Since the release of TG2 i have not been able to get a single thing to work. I relize others have been successful, so i guess its a matter of skill, but that is little comfort. I feel like i lost a great tool. very sad.
Full version? I thought thats what i have on the computer, the full version. O, so i have a tech preview that is so crippled that i can not preview any feature of this new technology. Picture me shaking my head in disgust right now. "Free", is too expensive a price for that heaping, steaming pile of crap. - Thats my technology preview, review.

I downloaded it form the Planetside website. My friend and I waited fro months, counting down to the day the website said we could download. And alas, the day came upon us. We eagerly raced to our computers to install the proggi. Oh the times we had. A month of sweaty, bloody, urine soaked, hard work later, and i said screw it. Let me know if they ever get it to work. with that resolution, and only shaders, i guess 10-15 min max pr frame.
Add objects, and rendertime will increse dramaticly.
If the details and aa is tuned well, you might get it down to 4-5 min pr frame on a quick pc.
