Bought it for around $800 and then sold it for $1600. Then bought another one for $1600. See my video list for 64bit mame cab and that's what I'm playing on now.
GPX is ok but nothing beats playing with real joystick and buttons, standing in front of the real deal. hearing that bass rumble the floor underneath you, whippin your friend next to you in Street fighter II
Whether or not the GP2X is more efficient and portable than an arcade doesn't really matter. There is simply nothing better than building, customizing, and finally playing your own arcade cabinet.
Omit the term "building" from your sentence, seeing as how nearly everyone buys a pre-built cabinet (for most, the pre-built cabinet will include everything but the system).
P.S. I find it funny how people, knowing about emulation, still buy systems that are 100% emulated. Sure, you can always use a cliche reason -- "It's my favorite system!" -- but that doesn't justify the amount you spent.
In the end, I'm a proud owner of a NAOMI with all the fighters. Best part? Got it all for under $200.
dude this is an awesome video and has pushed me to buy a gp2x - can you link to me a site that has forums/downloads and info on running mame through the gp2x? (l'm a linux noob)

I agree. The only places that still have large collections of arcade games for money are pizza and bar type places like Chucky Cheeses and Dave n Busters where both make money off of pizza and drinks using the games to attract.
The only exception to the above in the US are small niche arcades that cater to japanese or fighting games but then they typically go out of business after a year or so.
I think Japan is the only place where you can open an arcade up making money off of the games.

I have an arcade cabinet running MAME as well. What is the software interface you're using to select the emulators and providing the backdrop and previews of each game in the menu?
There are several FE's / front-end's available. The one I'm using is called "MALA". Other popular ones are (and you'll see them on youtube) Maximus Arcade, Hyperspin, Mamewah, and AtomicFE.
Hey mind posting a link to the music playing? I've forgot if it's mentioned in the credits or anything, seeing as it's 4 weeks ago since last I saw this movie.
I'd like to use it as the booting music for my mame arcade machine, cause it'd be awesome. :P
The whole point of a cabinet is to have a large screen and a ton of controls. You're kind of comparing apples and oranges.
And if you want quick boot time on a cabinet, make use of the hibernate function in whatever underlying OS is running the cabinet, probably Linux or DOS.
it doesnt take 50 seconds for mame to load a game and the arcade quality is a bonus, but im pretty sure the gp2x cant play games like killer instinct or marvel vs capcom.
I wouldn't compare both, I would own both! the GP2X to take it somewhere and be able to play arcade perfect version of MvC at full speed on the go while the arcade cabinet to play at home with bigger screen and greater sound, these videos also attract a lot of trolls like scott6725 and gamemaster14neo who are making stupid comparisons. Of course a laptop is better, but if you want to play just games on the go or whatever, what do you prefer? a laptop or a PSP? and on the case of the cabinet?...
Your video is wrong about 1 thing, Cabinet is based on a pc which can emulate alot more systems than a gp2x ever could. Power flexability? Really?
I personally think any laptop beats a gp2x since the mame emulating is just so limited on the system its not worth the time or expense if thats all you are getting it for.
Well, you gotta think about this two. The gp2x has like what ? a 3x4 inch screen and crappy sound? in my mame arcade cabinet I have a 32 inch tv, plus a sweet ass stereo system. Theres no way you can compare the two anyways. The gp2x is for travel the cabinet is for show off. Its like comparing a pile of vomit with a peice of shit.
cool device but i think not a draw, it could be said that its equal to play mame on a normal pc or laptop, or watch baseball, soccer on tv rather then go to a game i'd have gotten a ds or psp if i had a mame cabinet, no offence

no offense but why would you buy this it cost about the same as a psp but the psp can play mame and more i mean it still is cool but just think about it
You're right, they're pretty comparable but the gp2x community is great and the thing uses cheap SD cards which i share w/ my other devices. Plus, there are no firmware changes and the screen doesn't have as much motion blur as the PSP's. On top of that, it uses regular cheap AA's.
i think gp2x sux in compared to a cab, it's like virtually driving a car, cool features and stuff but somethin is just missing, teh arcade feeling i just made one and compared to por devices it sux
I think it's so freakin awesome that you downloaded and are using the Bootskin that I created, to boot up your M.A.M.E. ! I use to create Bootskins for WinCustomize under the name "Skinned Alive". Thank You SO Much for using it! I've never gotten to see one of my Skins used in action by someone else before.
Are you serious? This is one of the more popular skins I've seen online!!!! Tons of people use it. That's why it's used in this cabinet (which I no longer own) and in the current cab.
Yeah bro. I haven't made any Skins since March of last year. I actually had created an alternate version of that skin with a different background, and had changed the Font style underneath MAME name and around the Progress Bar to more of an Arcade style Font. It looks kind of like the old Pole Position style font from the old Upright. I have it lying around somewhere on a Back-Up Disc. Thank You SO Much for the Great Comment!
Nice tune. :D Might I be able to get the name of it?
Yes, it looks like I'll buy a GP2xF200 to play around with. :D I don't know why, I guess seeing that the arcade titles work at decent speed made me become intrigued.
thanks for the video, nice mame cab, i have always liked the metal japanese sit down arcade machines the gamepark looks like an ok machine, but i am going to wait until the price comes down, maybe there should be a video showing the differences between the GP2x and the GP32
I no longer own this metal "candy" cab. But man, it was a b!tch and a half to move it upstairs where you see it in the video. I managed to sell it during a house move and had the house movers move it to another house.
GP2x is effectively illegal to sell and distribute because of the GPL violations. People have been complaining about the non availability of the linux kernel, the MPlayer source and other GPL programs used by GP2x.
yeah, it's a shame GPH has decided to take that route. Although nothing is happening because GPH's got little money / market share to go after and everyone's gearing up to the GP2X successor (not the touch screen version).
I had to watch this because it seemed a kind of odd comparison. It started off somewhat serious but got funnnier by the minute. It hooked me, I couldn't stop watching.
Congratulations! Yes, humor was the intent. It should be obvious that I enjoy retro gaming and emulation on various platforms. I wouldn't want to be without either.
Lol, if I could, I would. I suppose you can get in touch with someone on youtube, and collaberate a video together - you make the gp2x video - and the other user makes a PSP video. If you both use the same format to film, i.e the boot screen, the same emus, the same games on those emus.
So then you can compare the two videos, as a video response :)
You should DEFINATELY put up a PSP emu vs GP2X emu video - not many of those on here thats up to date, and especially with the new GP2X coming out - you will get loads of views :)
Whats all this about "bought in the shops".. Since when can you purchase a MAME arcade in a shop?!?!
Mame, emulation, Gp2x, emulation - birthed and grows on the internet. Not in shops. Why would you want to get inflated cost in the shops anyways?
BTW - You can't compare an arcade to a handheld, I can see someone hooking up a gp2x INTO a cabinet, onto the dock, tv-out, custom controls in the EXT - very handy.
But you should really compare psp vs gp2x emulation :)
Actually here in town, you can buy one at Fry's and many of the pool table / game room type stores. ...and they're even more expensive than places on the net.
BTW, in the next video, I'll be comparing the gp2x to an open faced rueben. I'm not sure what the point will be but it'll sure be delicious!
Hmm, a large screen, full joystick and button layout + multiple players... or a handheld 4 inch screen version that probably cant run CHDs or CPS3 grade emulation.
It is a silly comparison. But I'm not sure it's that far off. The gp2x can connect via TV-Out to a "large screen". The gp2x can connect via USB to full joysticks and with multiple players. It can't run CPS3 games but it is less than $200, considerably easier to setup than a real mame cabinet, and portable. yes. portable.
The front end used in this video is MALA v1.0 RC7. You should check out this more recent video of a newer cabinet running MALA v1.04 but this time with moving video previews. Click on my name and/or search for a video titled:
"Arcade MAME front end: MALA and video snaps from Emumovies"
PLEASE DO NOT READ THIS!I'M REALLY SORRY. THIS IS THE STUPIDEST THING EVER!!! BUT I LOVE MY MOM AND DON'T WANT TO TAKE ANY CHANCES! If you do not copy and paste this onto 10 videos your mom will die in 4 hours
hahaha... give in to your lust! Play retro forever. Having a gp2x and a mame cabinet is a must. I've recently purchased someone's modified 4 player cabinet and will hopefully post a video soon... as soon as i get broadband back.
In my oppinion, this vs reviews is something like "my pennis is larger than yours"... it´s obvious that an arcade cabinet is much better for playing arcade games. Anyway, Gp2x is a wonderfull machine.
The whole point of the arcade cab was missed. You cant get the flavour of real arcade on a handheld. Standing up till your feet ache and knocking and kicking the machine to hell. Try that with a GP and see who wins. Id like to know the boot bios bit too! Built an arcade cab, but normally put it into hibernate, one press and a few seconds later mame is up.
Holmes.... that's not just any pac-man. It's the early prototype version where the ghosts were video taped sock puppets superimposed on a vector map through a green screen. Try emulating this setup on any other handheld.

The GP2X Wiz is the fastest handheld portable gaming system that exists today, it runs more than 3 times the speed of a PSP.
But it costs $10 more than a PSP.
Of course, this is the first generation GP2X. I think it tops out at 200 Mhz, although you can overclock it to an extent.

There are mountains written about emulators for the gp2x. go to the gp2x wiki and you'll have more to read than you want to.
emulators are not built-in. authors write them, post them, and you copy it to your SD card.

19Bigfoot85 4 years ago
Nice tune. :D Might I be able to get the name of it?
Yes, it looks like I'll buy a GP2xF200 to play around with. :D I don't know why, I guess seeing that the arcade titles work at decent speed made me become intrigued.
tjmixmasta 4 years ago
one thing to add, the gp2x can be configured to output at a higher resolution to a tv through a backround app that works with all programs.
kipchak 4 years ago
thanks for the video, nice mame cab, i have always liked the metal japanese sit down arcade machines the gamepark looks like an ok machine, but i am going to wait until the price comes down, maybe there should be a video showing the differences between the GP2x and the GP32
Jshaw71 4 years ago
I no longer own this metal "candy" cab. But man, it was a b!tch and a half to move it upstairs where you see it in the video. I managed to sell it during a house move and had the house movers move it to another house.
amiga2000 4 years ago
how much did you sell it for? I would keep the thing on the 'ground' floor, but hey whatever
Jshaw71 4 years ago
GP2x is effectively illegal to sell and distribute because of the GPL violations. People have been complaining about the non availability of the linux kernel, the MPlayer source and other GPL programs used by GP2x.
TheNumber4q 4 years ago
yeah, it's a shame GPH has decided to take that route. Although nothing is happening because GPH's got little money / market share to go after and everyone's gearing up to the GP2X successor (not the touch screen version).
amiga2000 4 years ago
I had to watch this because it seemed a kind of odd comparison. It started off somewhat serious but got funnnier by the minute. It hooked me, I couldn't stop watching.
Simple humour but really funny. Nice job!
OziX90 4 years ago
Congratulations! Yes, humor was the intent. It should be obvious that I enjoy retro gaming and emulation on various platforms. I wouldn't want to be without either.
amiga2000 4 years ago
Now you're getting it! :-D
amiga2000 4 years ago
I own and love my GP2x, but seriously, what is the point of this? It's like comparing a skateboard and a Ferarri.
Yes, one costs less and you can take it places with you, but it certainly won't do everything the other can do.
Everything has its' place, and this video doesn't come up with anything new that isn't already just plain common sense.
superjamiedotnet 4 years ago
Lol, if I could, I would. I suppose you can get in touch with someone on youtube, and collaberate a video together - you make the gp2x video - and the other user makes a PSP video. If you both use the same format to film, i.e the boot screen, the same emus, the same games on those emus.
So then you can compare the two videos, as a video response :)
FloweryBee 4 years ago
You should DEFINATELY put up a PSP emu vs GP2X emu video - not many of those on here thats up to date, and especially with the new GP2X coming out - you will get loads of views :)
FloweryBee 4 years ago
I would love to do that. Now I just need a PSP... can you send me one? lol
amiga2000 4 years ago
Whats all this about "bought in the shops".. Since when can you purchase a MAME arcade in a shop?!?!
Mame, emulation, Gp2x, emulation - birthed and grows on the internet. Not in shops. Why would you want to get inflated cost in the shops anyways?
BTW - You can't compare an arcade to a handheld, I can see someone hooking up a gp2x INTO a cabinet, onto the dock, tv-out, custom controls in the EXT - very handy.
But you should really compare psp vs gp2x emulation :)
FloweryBee 4 years ago
Actually here in town, you can buy one at Fry's and many of the pool table / game room type stores. ...and they're even more expensive than places on the net.
BTW, in the next video, I'll be comparing the gp2x to an open faced rueben. I'm not sure what the point will be but it'll sure be delicious!
lol
amiga2000 4 years ago
GP2X sux ass!
TheNumber4q 4 years ago
This is a ridiculous comparison
Hmm, a large screen, full joystick and button layout + multiple players... or a handheld 4 inch screen version that probably cant run CHDs or CPS3 grade emulation.
ZetaGouki 4 years ago
It is a silly comparison. But I'm not sure it's that far off. The gp2x can connect via TV-Out to a "large screen". The gp2x can connect via USB to full joysticks and with multiple players. It can't run CPS3 games but it is less than $200, considerably easier to setup than a real mame cabinet, and portable. yes. portable.
amiga2000 4 years ago
I'm not disputing the fact that it's cool (I ordered one today) but to compare and declaring a winner on either side is just silly to me.
ZetaGouki 4 years ago
:-) that's why there was no winner.
amiga2000 4 years ago
good video. i'm off to research whether you can use more controllers when you tv-out for multi-player
kickanaut 4 years ago
what PC mame front end are you using?
chadballew 4 years ago
The front end used in this video is MALA v1.0 RC7. You should check out this more recent video of a newer cabinet running MALA v1.04 but this time with moving video previews. Click on my name and/or search for a video titled:
"Arcade MAME front end: MALA and video snaps from Emumovies"

iozam 4 years ago
y él no es poop!!! jajajajaj

Great Response.
I enyoyed this video and realized that both are great machines. I purchased the f200 w touchscreen.
erikin2k7 4 years ago
I dont see how GP2X having alot of emulators and the mame cabinet having ALL emulators is a draw.
Gamemaster14XIV 4 years ago
The gp2x is portable, tons cheaper to own and operate.

startup screen for mala? do you mean the street fighter wallpaper or the mame logon on windows boot?
amiga2000 4 years ago
LOL, you can't put coins in your GP2X!XD

Ahaha, this video got more and more hilarious as time went on. And now I'm lusting again over getting a GP2X and building an arcade cabinet.
Aotommo 4 years ago
hahaha... give in to your lust! Play retro forever. Having a gp2x and a mame cabinet is a must. I've recently purchased someone's modified 4 player cabinet and will hopefully post a video soon... as soon as i get broadband back.

shaunmugen 4 years ago
In my oppinion, this vs reviews is something like "my pennis is larger than yours"... it´s obvious that an arcade cabinet is much better for playing arcade games. Anyway, Gp2x is a wonderfull machine.
Macarro 4 years ago
The whole point of the arcade cab was missed. You cant get the flavour of real arcade on a handheld. Standing up till your feet ache and knocking and kicking the machine to hell. Try that with a GP and see who wins. Id like to know the boot bios bit too! Built an arcade cab, but normally put it into hibernate, one press and a few seconds later mame is up.
corbinretro 4 years ago
Wow!! It can run pac-man? That is incredible.
Canckeraep 4 years ago
Holmes.... that's not just any pac-man. It's the early prototype version where the ghosts were video taped sock puppets superimposed on a vector map through a green screen. Try emulating this setup on any other handheld.
amiga2000 4 years ago
Informative video, but that music is AWFUL. I had never even heard of the GP2X before.
delboyplonker 4 years ago
you're prolly one of those "Dell computer" buyers lol

yea...that GPX2 thing really emulates the feel of an arcade (sarcasm)... who cares.
beauh69 4 years ago
yeah it totally sucks ass, who wants to live in yesteryear
