I wouldn't say she's the most debated dancer, I wouldn't call her a DANCER. To say she's a dancer entails calling this a performance, and I refuse to do so. This is merely a student recital, a final exam maybe. People examine/observe/evaluate her instead of enjoying her. I can appreciate her effort but it is not anywhere near the standard this choreography asks for.

These are awful fouettes, BUT truth be told her fouettes have improved greatly since then. You really can't compare 2007 Alina to present day Alina, there's a night and day difference. She's a much better artist now.

Just because she is tall, with long and legs does not make her a Balanchine "ballerina". She doesn't dance close to any of Balanchine muses! Go watch Suzanne Ferrell or Heather Watts... And then tell me if she even dances close to that style!

I think.. You either love Alina, or you hate her. Most people anyway. Me, I prefer more orthodox ballerinas. Especially since, her extreme flexibility makes her dancing toooooo lose and often awkward. I feel like she couldn't stop her leg if it wanted to do a 360 around her.

she is not the ultimate Balanchine ballerina and it is apparent in her lack of musicality. this role was created on Violette Verdy, the French muse of Mr. B because she was the most musical dancer her ever knew! Alina is so far from the musicality required in this piece that it inhibits her performance instead of augmenting it. the accent is always on the downbeat (the 1) never the "and" and that's why she looks awkward and unpolished. to dance Balanchine you have to know MUSIC!!!!!

@celmaifierce21 i agree. She has amazing limbs and great flexibility but her dancing is completely off key! Also she looks like she is rushing, which this variation shouldn't look like, ever. I know many adore Somova but I really think she lacks control.

Fouette remain Alina’s Achilles’’ heel. As far as everything else she is *the* ultimate Balanchine Ballerina. Balanchine favored daring off-centre movements, open hips, separated fingers and positively unrounded arms and foremost ORIGINALITY.
