It's the same principle as dry shampoo for a human; the dust traps excess oils and keeps the fur lofty. Many species do this.

Huh, my domestic bunny throws himself around like that too. I wonder why. Almost looks like he's trying to lie on his back.

we got 4 of'm 2 dwarfbun's and 2 lope ears...
the reason why they do the ''drop dead'' is when they feelin comfortble/relax .
the same goes for the what we call ''rodeo-ride'' running aroud amke the weirdest hops/bounce/jumps and head shakes.

I think it might be a sandbath of sorts in this case. Various animals (especially birds) do this to absorb excess oiliness in the fur or feathers.
