@cinqueottavi : ever been to the Philippines? I have and people carry knives all the time. Trust me, this stuff is still being used and is alive today.
@cinqueottavi you have to actually train in FMA or kali to understand the concept.....the sticks represent a sword, a knife or empty hands....for practical / real-life application...your innocent pen, umbrella, cane, flashlight...etc can become a deadly weapon
Where I live alot of people a knife and since a stick is only a small diameter cylindrical object or edged weapon I'm sure you can find something (as said an umbrella, cane, tree branch, pipe, baseball bat, hard ruler). For a knife you can substitute a pen, cell phone, etc. So by that I'm saying a master of this martial art could become extremely deadly with a pen and a ruler which I'm sure are pretty commonplace in backpacks etc. You need to understand the art to utilize it...
@kenseisato1989 it is all kali (or arnis/eskrima) but we have sarong techniques as well like silat and if your implying the drill thats similar to wing chun's chi-sao it's hubud which is the kali version but it is has knives as well as sticks involved. and i dunno a lot of filipino practitioners tend to look, move and seem younger than their age.
Guro Dan, has so much knowledge, so much heart,. and so much dedication to martial arts. I am so honored to be a part of that family and lineage. Plus... he's just so so darn good.
Had the privilege of attending Guro Dan's seminars... it's all about love!
