Truly one of my favourite cars, with proper off-road ability but based on a proper car chassis (Impreza). My favourite however is the 2005 model, looks a bit more in character than 2006- and was still quite light still then with better torque low down. New one has adapted the big boxy SUV syndrome.

4wd and awd is the same. 4x4 is different

wrong, 4wd means 50/50 transfer back and front. In other words there is no differential in the middle of the car so the front diff spins the same as the rear. This is what old Subaru's have. AWD means it has a centre differential. This allows slip between front and rear, which is needed for on road due to the rear diff not needing to turn as many times around a corner as the front does.

Escape is a small suv aimed at a feminine clientele... 85000km tranny blowouts are current and to top it off, Forester wins agility (climbing, turning, hill descent) year after year compared to everything out there. I used to have a Justy 2x4 and my Bro's 4runner never went where I couldn't follow. Including wood trails and river crossings in Upper Québec.

And BTW, this is not a Station Wagon, it is a Crossover vehicle. The Forester's frame are mounted on the Impreza chassis for your information.

The Escape is a fine small SUV, but the Forester is a better vehicle. Any comparison test I've seen, whether on-road or off-road, has put the Forester ahead of the Escape, for its superior road manners, superior construction and stellar AWD system. I would have to see an Escape doing some pretty serious stuff before I'd believe it would "own" a Forester.

In passing--the 2009 Forester has 8.9 inches of ground clearance, claimed to be the most of any small SUV.
