just because you mention that you smoke weed on the internet doesnt make you cool - this is about music and vibes and if u need that to feel them then theres something wrong with you
@greendreamism Although its a totally awesome album, for my money Scott does provide a few lesser moments with his hard man, screamed vocals. He's fantastic on this one tho, all understated yet still that fire that burns and simmers beneath. Wish he had sang the rest of the record in this way. As for the LP cover it's had its naysayers but im with you on this one its totally cool. It visually conjures up the whole concept that bind the members.
Does Al sing 'Deliverance' instead "The non returner soars" the second time? Give me a hell yeah. And if anyone wonders where Tenan is it stand for mother or portective stone.
@mrsir4 Yeah, genres are just usefull tools to judge music and the arts right away. E.g. -Not all country is honky hoedown gospels, there's old school folk bluesy country (which was the basis for rock and roll). The arts are really complex since they cannot just be measured in sound alone.
If you're searching for something else, slow and heavy, like the godfather of stoner Wino taught us...try Enchanting Odyssey from Ivy Garden Of The Desert!
i get naked and build shrines in the forest whenever possible.it sunny outside.im gonna get so stoned i can fly and land in the woods buck naked.there i will raise skulls and bones and rail my woman till she cries out in agony.im bringin my laptop so i can play this while im doing all that.what a hypocrite.
@cavs608 Pretty much the same here. What i love about all of Al's work is that there is real substance there. It isnt superficial or tacked on meaning, it runs deep and is central to the bands at their core. I think that his interest in spirituality and meditation inexplicably finds its way into and contributes also. As a listener that density of creation rubs off. The songs are not showy, technical exercises but tonal poems that resonate somewhere within us more so than a simple song. Al rules!
i know this is pretty much stoner metal but why do more and more people only listen to music while stoned...? can't you people understand music on your own? you need some sort of hallucinogen to explain the feeling you need to get while listening to a fine tune? weaklings...
@eggfleece see this is exactly what i mean. Why do people think that 'coolness' and 'open mindness' and even the understanding of some music can come only after smoking pot. i cannot tell you how 'fun' i am to hang out with because you don't know me and it would just stupid to tell you that i am a fun person. Anyway, what i actually want to say is that you can understand music even if you're not high. you just have to look in the right places of a song. peace dude
@eggfleece whatever man... i'm not going to force my opinions on anybody. you should go and smoke some weed if you like it. i'm not blaming anybody for doing it. it's just that i've been studying music for 12 years and i got to feel it with no artificial stimulant just my soul...this sounded kind of fruity. anyway :)) think i'm just gonna go and fuck my brain cells and liver with a pint of beer
@lorand133 I can totally feel their music without being under ANY influence. I have studied music for OVER 12 years, and YES.. I CAN feel it.. with ALL of my Soul ;D On a side note.. if I WERE going to listen to them under any influence, I would certainly much rather do so on the herb, rather than rotting my gut and liver on alcohol. You don't see people dying from rotten livers from smoking the herb, yet you see it with alcohol every day. You've rotted cells, liver & all that studying
interesting to see the paths that the guys from Sleep have taken. Cisneros with this epic album playing off of the kind of thing he was doing in Om (great rhythm band). Matt Pike is doing his heavy shred thing with High On Fire... quite different from the simple heavy stoner riffs of Sleep.
Pyramid Of The Moon is absolutely amazing stuff from these four musical gods. Even after playing this album to death for over a year i still think it's an awesome, AWESOME record. Cannot wait for more!
I need a huge, size o' my screen, green weedian button. Just so nobody can ever MAKE A FUCKING MISS THE LIKE BUTTON JOKE AGAIN. And because no other button would be sufficient for this music. Wino is king.
@ifiwerethesonofgod i think that there should be an "epic piece of shit" button. these assholes repeat their guitar riffs as much as a shit rap song, and it is very monotone.
@pastulioxx1 is obviously an idiot troll with no purpose in life other than to critique those that are following their own dreams.. im sorry i havent heard yr album or single song... dont be mad cause you spend yr life eeking out a living while yr boss gets rich off yr work... if you dont like.. go away..
@dogthruhoopbullshit cry me a river. I'm sorry, but this is talent-less music. Any 5 yr old play the same damn chords over and over. The only good thing about this song are the vocals; at least they can harmonize.
@pastulioxx1 Riffs don't have to be technical and hard to be good. Most important thing is that they make you feel something. This makes me feel calm and high. I like also technical music (Meshuggah, Gojira etc.) and they are good on what they do and i love the complex riffs and all. IMO it's pointless to say that "5 year old could play this" ..maybe the 5 year old kid could play this, but it doesn't make the riffs and the whole song bad. This song takes me carried away every time.
@pastulioxx1 do you play a guitar? if you did you would notice many different melodies, rythms,CHORDS and even tempo changes. you know NOTHING about what your talking about. you simply don't get it, and you need to feel good about yourself, because we DO get it
I read somewhere in an interview with Scott Kelly that Al and Scott totally improvised the chants at around 3:43. He said they had never done that in rehearsals up until that point in the studio. Also, this album was recorded in less than 3 days. Amazing group.
What the heck do NWOBHM have to do with what bands like Shrinebuilder are doing? Yeah, they are both metal but they offer such different moods and dynamics.
A supergroup.....yes, but these people make music for pure atmosphere, not 'hits'. I think this is the only way a 'supergroup' works properly. Plus, hearing Al Cisneros and Scott Kelly's vocals on one track is ridiculously epic. Plus, I'm drunk.
@GodlikeGuitar Heck no bud! They rule! They're not selling themselves out, they're still loyal to their roots (Metallica didn't, actually, in the early 90s, and the last Iron Maiden song, "El Dorado", has a little modern rock'n'roll inspiration in the vein of Nashville Pussy, at least in my opinion: it's not as cool as "Run To The Hills" or "Flight Of Icarus", but it's listenable: obviously sludge is far cooler than "El Dorado", ONLY than "Dorado":Iron Maiden just had a lack of inspiration
Shrinebuilder's sound and wholeness is completely crap compared to old Om. They have went commercial and classical. A huge step back from what they were so lucky to start with.
My problem with a lot of stoner metal type bands is the vocals. I know its not supposed to be death metal or grind vocals, but to me they are often too soft. This dudes voice fits the style much better.
ok so i listen to some of the fastest blastbeat metal out there(tbdm, malevolent creation, anata, the faceless, necrophagist, etc) but i absolutly love doom/stoner metal...ive been in love with it since i heard sabbath and deep purple way back when i was a wee lad...so slow and heavy. oh and bands like sleep and electric wizard are amazing too, try cough if anyones intersted, almost black metal vocals over heavy ass riffs and drums...badass shit
It's mostly Wino, but Al's voice cuts straight through the rest when he does sing; impossible to miss. Scott's voice is there, but only to harmonize, he's not significant in that aspect.
Thank you youtube for sending me this in my recommends.

Just Gorgeous!!
in my OPINION, it sounds like what Nirvana hoped to sound like. (sanz the ending)
It would make no sense if this wasnt a super group.
Thanks for the post

that's like comparing Joseph Conrad to Oscar Wilde... completely different, but equally good.

The whole record is beautifully crafted, I had high hopes for this and still got totally blown away.Essential to any doom collection!

This is some of the best doom I've heard in years.
Quick question though:
Can anybody tell me who's singing where?
I used to think Wino did most of the vocals, then I found out Scott Kelly is singing, and now I hear Al is too.
If anybody can clear this up, that would be great.
Again, awesome stuff.
Thanks, all.

It's mostly Wino, but Al's voice cuts straight through the rest when he does sing; impossible to miss. Scott's voice is there, but only to harmonize, he's not significant in that aspect.

Scott does add a fair bit on the record. On this song he sings until Al comes in at 5:30. As for the rest its like this:
Solar Benediction - mostly Wino with a few Scott moments inbetween
Blind For All To See - only Scott
The Architect - starts with Wino until the middle where Scott takes over and you can hear Dale adding backing vocals underneath
Science Of Anger - equal part Wino & Scott with a long jam outro where Al once again handles sole vocal duties for yet more mantra magic!
