  • They sound truly amazing. But I would really like to hear this collaboration now, when they have developed so much with their perfected tone... and finally I am glad on Scofield's ways, that he changed his looks. He looks cool now, and he looked.... well it was ok. cause he played that good... :P (just kidding, you can look whatever you like, but dude - he's not pretty with that look) and finally x 2: SHEIT I LOVE TO SEE THOSE TWO PLAY TOGETHER!! TRULY MASTERS!

  • The Great Eastern! ^__^

  • Where did this come from? This is an exceptional line up!

  • Scofield's Ibanez sounds very thin in comparison to Frisell's SG...

  • what happend to mojo highway? ha i cant remember the name of it but it was a sweet song , it was the only one that got removed though

  • Sco's tone kinda sux here. It's too flutey.

  • I love frissell's style....like no one else

  • John Mayer with big glasses!

  • fantastique et mémorable!

  • Marc Johnson's Bass Desires are my introduction to modern jazz in the eighties. This music will become classics later on,doesn't loose any of its power and originallity.Really great stuff.

  • i dig some of sco's playin but his tone is horrible here.. frisell always sounds good!

  • ヘーイ I wanted to hear Dr. Erskine's solo also...hey

    thanks anyway for uploading.

  • I love that Scofield visibly tells Frisell to turn down during Scof's solo. They are like oli and water musically (Scofield sensitive, Frisell bold), but it works. Amazing stuff. Erskine really grooves.

  • nice ! 侍ヒーホウ.

  • That Fender would have been smokin' the Roland amp also...

  • As far as volume and tone, Bill's Boogie Mark II would have been smoking Sco's Roland Jazz Chours also....

  • @montycraig1

Bill's anything would smoke Sco's anything.

  • this group is so awesome, i just got second sight and i love it. i love bill's playing i would almost describe it as surf jazz.

  • I love, love, love, love this music. For me one of the best cd's of John Scofield. The others are equaly fantastic. The mix of Scofield and Frisell is amazing, magic, fabulous. Erskine superb. Marc Johnson sounds so sweet and nice... The whole cd sounds just with a very very good sound. Thanks Marc Johnson ;.-) I listen to it since 1989 ;-)

  • tone is overrated in my humble joe-schmoe opinion(in comparison to what/how the actual lines are saying/articulated), but I guess it's an equally essential element to some people- however I dare too say that tone is ultimately a matter of subjective/personal taste. Peace to all of you Bass Desire/Johnson/Erskine/Frizz/Sco fans

  • 5:02 Crank it Bill!!!!!!!!

  • At 2:30 he CLEARLY motions Bill to stop trying to comp. He is too loud, and with the two playing in their very different styles, but both out of intonation it doesn't gell at all. I love Sco and like Bill, but he killed Sco there

  • Notice too, Sco does absolutely nothing behind Bill's solo.

  • yeah it looked like bill was trying to turn down his amp too

  • I think you're right, man..

  • what's Sco doing at 2:04?

  • Genious solo buy scofield, they should turned dowm frisells guitar a bit during his solo though

  • Always a pleasure to hear this fine tune...

  • What a f**ck does this Scofield show to Bill? He takes too much of the space in this track!!!!! Frisell is a greatest master ever lived!

  • Great stuff !! my heros !!

  • I heard the abercrombie version this though is cool 2 heavy hitters scofield and bill frisell

  • Bene, finale discriminatorio, proprio mentre inizia il solo di peter...

  • e da un tedesco che ti aspettavi

  • I love these modal jams....

  • why don't you just listen to the art that's being created and not make any stupid comments about the manner in which it is created....asshole

  • it's not that i don't like the fact they are reading music. It's just that it shows. The jam isn't very intense, and one way they could bring it to that level is through making actual eye contact.

  • Last time I checked you listen with your ears, not your eyes.

  • People who can ready music and have to deal with something a little more complicated than some simple ass rock vamp, I guess.

  • I'd like to see you play better.

  • Professional musicians, that's who. They write this stuff down in their dreams. Talent is good, but training makes talent really shine. These guys are disciplined and focused. Look at how they play... with ease and grace. Their minds and bodies are merged. Zen Kabbalah meditation. That's what Jazz is all about.

  • Sco is too low in the mix...you can't really hear Sco's full tone...even if it''s that tone from his 80's chorus days, that everyone (with the exception from me) seems to dislike so much...was he motioning to Bill to turn down?

  • i love sco on the chorus.

  • when John schofields playing

  • bill frisell IS to loud

  • Bill's clean volume sounds about right to me, compared with the rhythm section. Sco's horrible '80's digital fizz-tone has no guts, and therein lieth the problem. Plus he's a cranky old bastard. I once watched him scowl and sulk his way through a 2 hour set. Perhaps he hates his job..

  • It's funny to see people marking this down - because actually, that's also the impression I got, and I happen to *like* Sco's playing. I guess it's a part of that bizzare "be positive, ALWAYS" policy some people live by...

  • Check out the album wayfarer by Jan Garbarek. Frisell plays on it and it was recorded during this high intensity period of Frisell's playing.

  • How dare you tell Frisell what to do... Bad Scofield! Bad!

  • CCCCCCCC COOL!

  • Is this version available on CD anywhere? Or is this video anywhere to be purchased? The version on the Bass Desires disc is good, but Bill's solo on this video is ferocious, the other one doesn't compare!

  • There is a live CD that is fantastic, Erskine's solo is mind blowing.

    I don't listen to guitar solos! :o)

  • How do you... not listen.. to... whadda you, some kinda music snob that blocks out every other instrument? The song is only complete with every element, and you're gonna say you 'don't listen' to the guitar solo? You seem awful proud of that fact. Gimme a fuckin' break, that's truly ridiculous.

  • Only a "ROCK" drummer would make a statement like that.

Maybe you should start you listening career right here, right now.

    Good luck.

  • fris' sole at the end is MONSTEROUS!!!

  • bill frisell is too loud

  • no he's not, scofield isn't loud enough ;) ok maybe frisell's a little loud when he engages distortion.. anyway, it's the soundman's fault that they're unbalanced

  • Peter looks like the Cheap Trick guitarist.

  • er, I mean Cheap Trick drummer.

  • The electric guitar is a very oriental sounding instrument!

  • anybody out there got marc johnson current affairs on video, love to see some of that.

  • Great stuff! Saw these guys January '87 at long-gone Fat Tuesday's on 2nd & 17th in NYC, a tiny room that they just kicked apart. There was confetti and plastic hats on the floor from New Year's Eve the night before. Frisell and Scofield went on to their huge careers, but this period is what launched them. Always thank the rhythm section. Amazing band -- thanks for posting.

  • grande bill!!!!

  • Thanx for posting! Still one of my favorites, especially Erskine's solo on the record, amazing! And sir Frisell... goddammned!

  • This is great!!! The Bass desires cd's are still among my favourites. I had this concert on video2000 once, but the recorder went broke about 20 years ago. I'm so happy to see a few parts again. Hope there is more where this came from....

  • Great composition!!!! Seen it on German TV way back... How about uploading the WHOLE song??? with Erskine solo and all, it was really something if I remember...

  • Ahh, the 80s. Mullets and hair! great playing!!

  • This is definitely one of my favorite marc johnson compositions

  • Scofield gesturing to Frisell to turn down made me laugh. I've heard Frisell a bunch and particularly in the late 80s and early 90s he could play REALLY loud at times which I dug, but it looked like his stuff was pointed at Scofield and Scofield was probably hearing it louder than Frisell. Thanks for this post. I love this tune and used to play it in a band. They look so young here. Frisell's playing that SG I first heard him play in maybe 82/3 with Jan Garbarek. Haven't seen that in years.

  • gotta point out that Sco is gesturing to the monitor engineer offstage right to turn Bill down in his wedge, apparently it was CRANKED.

(I heard this from one of the musicians onstage.)

  • Looks more like a Dungeons and Dragons game should have broken out, not one the most intense jams I've heard in some time. Wow! Gotta love Erskine's bow tie and a deep gratitude to Bill Evans for seeing something so special in Marc Johnson many years ago.

  • Marc's upright sounds AMAZING on this.

  • Bill's solo is weird and somehow traditional and the same time. Hat's off to Bill.

  • Thanks a lot! Frisell is da man!

One question: Is there any place I can get a complete video of this? I searched the usual places, but since it has no chance of appearing on dime (frisell is not allowed there), I don't know where else to look.

  • The feedback at 5:26 during Frisell's solo cracks me up for some reason. What a great band.

  • wonderful stuff.good to see `sweet soul` live

  • what an asshole sco is!! if anyone ever did that to me on the bandstand they'd get a guitar neck up their ass

  • Buncha the soulfulest dorks I ever saw. Holy crap this is good music, thought and felt at the deepest levels.

  • WOW ...never thought I'd 'see' this played - great jam. What's up, bowtie?!?

  • LMFAO!!!! "That waiter sure can play the drums"...Thanks 'promisefailed', you just made my day!!

  • Bills's playing in Supermarionation. And that waiter sure can play the drums...

  • hah what?? Supermarionation?

  • Gerry Anderson filmed Thunderbirds in Supermarionation - and Bill looks like 'Brains'!

Seriously, this band was and is such a great meld of musicians - they don't just play like a list of great names, they play awesome and powerful music. I really enjoyed the clips of them 20 years apart. Bill's solo here is killer!

  • No, sco is concerned those glasses are going to EAT Bills face.

The reason no one responded to Bills solo is because

all their heads exploded. Too much input, for them.

I loved it. Sco and Friz.

Sco is a hard, angular funky player extrodinaire

Like rubbing your face against asphalt he is.

Bill is like the water to sooth the abrasion. You still feel the pain but water washes it away.

    He's truly mezmorizzzing.

That's why the audience didn't respond, they were mezmerizzzed.

  • you're absolutely right!

"I like pleasure spiked with pain and music is my aeroplane..."

  • looks like scofield is trying to gesture to frisell to turn down at two points. wonderful music though.

  • Marcs mullet and Peters bowtie just have to be saved as relics from the 80´s!

  • One of my favorite groups ever!

  • Lovely tune!

  • I had no idea this footage existed.... THANKS so much for posting this.

  • frisell is cool :) yeah, sco, too :) lol, dumb audience, no applause for frisell's solo ;)

  • True that! Bill's lead there is just insane. Very very cool!

  • haha, I didn't notice that weird looking guy was scofield until he started playing... he looks like Sgt. Slaughter from GI Joe or something...thanks for posting this, it's great!

  • God Bless You!!!!
