I heard the Muzak version of this song in a department store the other day. I think it's the first time I'd heard Steely Dan on Muzak. Kind of a shock! Love the video, though.
I've been looking for this video forever, but I couldn't for the life of me remember the artist or the title. First I thought it was "Snow Day" and that got me nowhere. I was 19 when I first saw it. Crap. Apparently I'm now old.
its raining in Iraq today and this fits the mood...... Crazy enough, Mr. Fagen's tunes speak to my soul..... his music is True Magic...... There is no one like him ..... God Bless him....
I was a junior in high school at the time. I was into Jamiroquai and hiphop groups like the Fugees and The Roots. My Mom was caring for my ill grandmother and it was winter in Columbus Ohio. After I saw this video I literally watched VH1 everyday to catch it again so I could record it on VHS. Gives me wonderful memories of the last months of my grandmother's life.
Absolutely amazing song. I spent an entire summer on the beach listening to this album and it will forever remind me of that time and still to this day takes me back. I also spent a lot of time that summer learning all the drum tracks to it. On The Dunes was quite challenging. Any aspiring jazz musician who takes a stab it at learning this album will more than likely improve their skills. Thank you Donald Fagen!
I love this video I was in the 11th grade when it came out. Its so funny to me because they capture the every day John and Jane Doe. We all get up and head to work and sometimes were so tired until we might drift off to sleep and we hope and pray that our bosses dont catch us. And how many times did all of us wanted to throw our boss over the ledge
my late Ex.. Hated Steely Dan...Every Core of him hated Fagan...But I loved it all baby!..SnowBound came out.. and honey I played it non-stop! We Divorced a short time later...nuf-said....
...In the last song, "Teahouse On The Tracks," the narrator lands in dismal Flytown where he must decide whether to bail out or to rally and continue moving into the unknown."
... In the first song, "Trans-Island Skyway," the narrator tells us he is about to embark on a journey in his new dream-car, a custom-tooled Kamakiri. It's built for the new century: steam-driven, with a self-contained vegetable garden and a radio link with the Tripstar routing satellite. The next six songs describe his adventures along the way.
The CD had a storyline in it, if you'll take the time to listen/read. The "Kamakiriad" is a futuristic car in the storyline of the album(cd). The vid fits perfectly with the lyrics. The B-3fills really get me on this one. The way he's got the drawbars set with the percussion button on is perfect for the song. It's also a great tune with several tricky modulations with the coolest one coming out of the bridge back into the last chorus, and has an instant classic kind of feel.
It took me over 13 years to find this song, I know one sentence and one hour online and I found it, that was two years ago, finding the video today was just plain random luck thanks for putting this up
Have to say the video has no relationship to the music. Was that the intention? Or is this an April Fool thing? (in which case ya got me!) Part of the appeal of Steely Dan is the irony, and if this is a Steely Dan video then the irony is lost on me. Unless of course the non-relation of the video to the music was intended. But there you go again ... that old irony thing, he he. Bastards. Stop that now!
This is not a Steely Dan video, it's a Donald Fagen Video. And it think he was just experimenting with the media, see what he could make of it. It's interesting, and kinda invoked my interest in DF, and later Steely Dan.
What a fucking brilliant song, what afucking lousy video. Man, Donald, who the hell sold you that crap? What a shame! I would like to do a new video version of this song. Directed by Charlie Tokio
I saw this the 1st time on a beavis/butthead cartoon & I think I wore out the tape playing it over & over. This is a good song 2 play when you're soaking in a warm bathtub (especially 4 the winter)
The Great Steely Dan strikes again Donald Fagen is a musical and visual genius keeps his sound true to those good ole Disco days and nights of my WEST COASTAL Youth!
Fagan and Becker's brilliance is unparalleled. Melegorm's spectacular montage work on all the other videos is beyond perfection. The marriage of both is an audio-visual experience of supremacy!
I was always hip to Steely Dan,but the first time I seen this video was back in 1996 on Bevis & Butthead & thet were talin shyt over it,I was wishing the would shut the hell up so I could hear the damm song
Where is Bevis And Butthead now....? Forgotten.... Where in Mr. Fagen ? In The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame.... And still rockin over 30 Years later...... All Haters Better Recognize.....Fagen is a Legend....
I have to say the video doesn't really do it for me. Fagen is an amazing talent, though. A trilogy of albums, over 20 years is hardly prodigious, but what albums! Morph the Cat is as good as anything he has done. A musician with great integrity.
You're so right! My four-year-old granddaughter boogies when I put on the Dan. It just seemed so crass to tell the guy "you're obviously not INTELLIGENT enough to get it"!
The only issue I have with this video? It cuts the song short by almost 3 minutes! The guitar solo in the middle is botched and the fantastic tag is completely removed at the end. Walter Becker's guitar solos are hit-or-miss, but his job on both the bass and lead guitar on this song are incredible.
It's not as good as Nightfly or any of the other Dan records, with the possible exception of Can't buy a Thrill, but I'll still listen to it instead of the tripe out there today.
thats a good point...fagen/becker are one of the vbest musicians of our time.all jazz-musicians hate them and all the others don't know what to do with that stuff, its a miracle of "steely dan" that they are "between the seats"

I can't believe this trash was made by the same guy who made great albums like "The Royal Scam" and "Countdown to Ecstacy." He should've quit after releasing Aja as that was his last good album. This is just boring adult-contemporary garbage.
Face it, Steely Dan was better as a jazz-influenced rock band than the adult-contemporary snobs they became. Stick with the first 6 albums and you're all set.
you're wrong, wrong, wrong!perhaps "kamakiriad" is donalds best work ever!of course it needs a little time to get into into it.its one of the best producing-work ever, its timeless, wonderful lyrics, best walter on bass and leadguitar!listen again!!
I'm not trynig to knock this or anything (since the whole bloody thing's so inventive!) but something about this video makes me feel kinda drowsy, like I'm being hypnotized. I think this is just too mellow for my blood, since I'm more of a classic ro....zzzzzzz....
The video is spectacular, but it doesn't fit the song AT ALL. "Snowbound" is a beautiful poem about human beings in a sort of apocalypse. It's full of melancholy and irony. Michel Gondry has turned the story into some grotesque parade of clowns. He has missed a great opportunity. I can't believe that Fagen permitted this..!
I have known and dug this number for years...and am ashamed I never had seen the vid. You know, you always interpret a Fagen song in your own way, even visually... this is hip... a top notch work of art. So cool that it has stayed in the underground.
