Thanks for responding so quickly. Somewhere I have this really great documentary about the various incarnations of guitar [acoustic and electric, various body styles from dread to flats of all kinds] and there are all kinds of GREAT players on that. I'll find it and send it to you - I think you'd dig it. For real, it made me dig out vinyl, listen to everybody, then play for hours and adapt. Your style is interesting. Best luck in all your endeavors. -d
@dorio329699 yeah , i met him and talked to him for about 3 hours. He's definitely a genius and his playing is un-paralleled but .. even he would agree .. 2 hand acoustic flat tapping is completely different from what he's does. Jeff's right hand lead works are just amazing .. i watch him every chance i get just for the lead chops.
i just started playin really five months ago. i had a lyon by washburn acoustic then my parents saw me practicin close to every day and i started gettin a lot better quick. So, then they gave me this electric acous. takamine g series (one of the higher end ones) and the action is great. I am goin to get the neck adjusted bc some of the notes will come off sour, but i heard that using like toothpicks or somethin like that at the top of the neck beneath the strings can help and be a quick fix
@bryfrytheguy study arpeggio's / chord theory ( just the basics is all you need to start ) Use the left hand mostly for "rooting" yourself in the chord and the right hand for color and melody. Also, position the guitar so the neck doesn't pop up and down. most of the weight to the neck side. Hope that helps .. good luck .. Jeff
@capo420420 Thanks for your note on Lap Tapping. I find it very unique. In fact my 9 year old daughter who plays both piano and guitar can do that but she is just fooling around. I never knew this is a serious form of guitar playing. Your music is definitely out of this world.
Hey good song. Are you really tuned Half-way between notes? I find that I only need to tune ever so slightly below the given note for the intonation to sound right higher up the fretboard. Could just be my guitar is different though. Also, try checking out some older out of production guitars. It seems a lot of the 50's-70's acoustics are amazing for tapping.
try a Martin DX1RGT,it might help, its the best intonated, playing guitar Ive ever played and its got a huge tone.Of course I wouldnt be able to recomend it for your type of music, considering Im no where near your skill level.Awesome job,and good luck finding a nice acoustic, peace.
well i want to learn other peoples music but , i start out learning the tune & in the middle i have a great idea for a NEW tune. Of the 2 choices its better for me, you & everyone if i complete the NEW tune. i have a goal to learn cover tunes of T-cophony. I've learned "When Fall Asleep" & i'd like to learn all of his tunes. realistically i know that may never happen. I'll still try but My greatest responsibility is to the NEW ideas / tunes
your confidence in me is a great compliment . thanks
I've just been awarded a Regional Artist Project Grant by the Artist & Science Council .. purchasing some new video equipment and shooting a DVD & companion CD :)
Hi, just a quick comment, I used to have the same problem but now I buy bone bridges and shape them myself. Of course I waste one or two now and then but for the most part once seeing the current bridge and intonation, I assign each one an "out of intonation" value between 1-10 10 being too far out to fix likely and one being a slight adjustment. Anyways on a side note, Im positive you could find a guy in your town who does acoustic intonation and get one of your favorite guitars done. Nice Vid

hi Jeff! your guitar skills are amazing, thanks for subscribing for my videos, Im sorry for the late reaction I was tied up, but keep em coming, your vids a awesome!
Great work, Jeff. A lot of creativity with the exceptionally difficult "laptop" style. You're gaining on it in leaps and bounds.
But, from your comments, I think you need a guitar...
I have much to say about the intonation problem, but it'd fill 20 of these stupid comment boxes. I'll send a separate message. Briefly, it's not a problem with acoustical guitars in general, it's a problem with yours.
excellent! the points you make about the intonation on acoustic guitars is really interesting - i've been wondering about that for ages because i have always had that problem with my guitar sounding out of tune when i go further up the fret board! now i know why, thank you!! :D
/clap my friend. I tried the whole face up tapping thing and i suck at it. all the dicks out there who say it's nothing, they're idiots. Well done that's fantastic.
Nice playing man! On the intonation thing if you take your guitar to a competent repairman/luthier he (or she) can fairly easily do some work on the bridge saddle to even out the tuning problems you're having. Intonation is down to the saddle and its positioning not the truss rod (which determines neck relief). Good luck dude!
I didnt check to see if any one emtioned but every guitar I have encountered has a trus rod in the neck, ere go, a socket to adjust it. take the instrument to a guitar maintainance guy and he or she may be able to help ya out. Cheers. check out erik mongrain.
I linked you all over the place, man! I'm a former <lame> guitar player. Gave my old NMI acoustic to my son. He goofs around with Bassist4Sale and The Killing Moon <used to be Animal Suit Driveby> in Maine. I bought an Ud on a recent trip to Turkey. The Ud is an 11 string acoustic with a neck about a foot long. I haven't tuned it yet. Can totally relate to your description of tuning issues.
Excellent work man! If you wouldn't mind me asking a couple question? I'm new to the guitar and am curious. Can all acoustic guitars use amps? And, is tapping only possible on an acoustic with an amp?
if the acoustic has a plug in, then yea. If not, you'll need to get it added, which isnt a too complex process. Also, tapping is possible on any guitar, amp or not.
Have you ever thought of contacting anyone else who plays in this style, like Eric Mongrain and trying to put something together? Two or more people playing in this style would be amzing!
..here's to one of the most optimistic wild cats i have ever had the chance to see! ..shiet jeff keep slammmin it down bro. I'll be shootin down some major "airtap flutterplucker" originals very shortly. care and be cool to one another. mike
I thought I already commented on this video but when I read through the comments I can't see it. I'll write my comment out again! Another great video! Tuning can be a real pain sometimes but you still sounded as great as ever even with your intonation and fret problems! 5 stars!
hey capo nice tune man! keep up the great work bro and come by and check out my lastest hank and cash covers...merry xmas and happy new years to you and yours!
capo420420. Your playing is as awesome as always, Jeff. I am totally in awe of what you manage to achieve with the guitar across your lap. Happy Holidays, my Friend.
AWESOME !! 5 STAR as usual :) Nice story here in the comments about how you came up with the Name for this :) thanks for sharing that .. Happy Holidays Pootertoes :) PS did you mention somewhere about posting another song soon? in the bulliten ?
Wizardly is the word! I've been trying to experiment with the technique my self since I began veiwing your vids, and still haven't layed down a good riff. Play on Jeff!

zkreegs70 11 months ago
@zkreegs70 the neck adjustment is probably your best choice.
If you use open tunings , you'll have to re-adjust the neck for lower string tension.
IF your going to "shim" a string at the nut , use a small piece of guitar string.
I've done that and it does work if the nut has been cut too low.
Probably lasts longer than a toothpick too ;)
congrats on your "guitar upgrade" in honor of your hard work and perseverance
keep up the great work ..

What is this style of playing call? What kind of tuning it needs?
musicfamily 1 year ago
Hi 2 Hong Kong :)
This style is most commonly called "Lap Tapping" .
It is a very new style so it's also referred to by other names such as: flat tapping, piano style or air tapping.
I'm glad you enjoyed it ..
I enjoyed your video of Taylor Swift "Teardrops on My Guitar" .. keep up the great work ..

Indeed it does. :) One more question: how expensive, generally, is a good amp like that?
scameter 5 years ago
call John Hargiss in Omaha, Nebraska. He can fix ANYTHING acoustic. Or tell you how. Hargiss Stringed Instruments.

And, is tapping only possible on an acoustic with an amp?
scameter 5 years ago
if the acoustic has a plug in, then yea. If not, you'll need to get it added, which isnt a too complex process. Also, tapping is possible on any guitar, amp or not.
Hope that helps!

Have you ever thought of contacting anyone else who plays in this style, like Eric Mongrain and trying to put something together? Two or more people playing in this style would be amzing!

I thought I already commented on this video but when I read through the comments I can't see it. I'll write my comment out again! Another great video! Tuning can be a real pain sometimes but you still sounded as great as ever even with your intonation and fret problems! 5 stars!
