He's got balls, thats for sure. Even if the route isn't that hard (I dont know the rating of the climb) the sheer intensity of free solo-ing a climb that high takes some mental strength and a sense of confidence that many of us dont have

The Diving Board is one of the most exposed pitches in Eldo, offwidth too. I think I pulled on gear to get through it. The Naked Edge is much easier for most people.

I soloed Bastille Crack on sight, it's secure the whole way and the only 5.8 moves are at the bottom. Most of it is a 5.5 scramble as shown in the video.

my best advise is to go to a gym and learn the basic's then head outside. Another advantage of gyms is you will meets lot's of climbers with different skill levels. Useing the gym as a starting point you can get of to a safe start. Take advantage of the knowledge the staff at the gym provide.

not all do, some crazy bastards "onsight" free solo which means they know nothing about the route before they try it ... but i would be will to say that 90 % of climbers who free solo harder than 5.7 reherse the route on a rope first. Maybe im wrong and im just a pansy... i dont know.

I've onsight soloed up to 5.9 when I was onsighting 11d trad, 12d sport. Including the bastille, although when I was first starting out I climbed it with a rope. When I soloed it instead of going to the top I did the first pitch (crux) then downclimbed it.

Did you ever hear the story about the climber (forgot his name)that got into a fight with his girlfriend got pissed off ran from Boulder to Eldo then soloed the Diving Board in his running shoes? It's in one of John Long's books. I climbed the Naked Edge (roped) and fell off the last pitch because of the weird angle that traverses above the last pitch of the Diving Board. Never been so scared in my whole entire life! That dude had balls of steel.
