He's got balls, thats for sure. Even if the route isn't that hard (I dont know the rating of the climb) the sheer intensity of free solo-ing a climb that high takes some mental strength and a sense of confidence that many of us dont have
m- was 4warded this link so i could get a laugh, and i howled (at double speed)! 5m33sec is the record on BC, so it's well within u-tube time constraints. hell, it's only 10m to downsolo the thing. grab your camera, we'll rock something difficult.

this is lame. little kids solo harder and taller stuff than this in russia. I think it is stupid to risk your own life free soloing, but if your gonna do it go all out and at least free solo a 5.8 or 5.9
u people make me sick...these peoples lives are climbing...that's their passion..to them that is living life..living life on the edge...instead of tipping ur hat to what he did, u gotta say something negative..u wish u were him
i would get veritgo than fall and my head would most likely explode on a rock...is the adrenaline rush really that crazy? looks like fun if u can do it
The Diving Board is one of the most exposed pitches in Eldo, offwidth too. I think I pulled on gear to get through it. The Naked Edge is much easier for most people.
I soloed Bastille Crack on sight, it's secure the whole way and the only 5.8 moves are at the bottom. Most of it is a 5.5 scramble as shown in the video.
hey he kind of looks like he is body poping with the video at that speed! I would have edited the vid by filming the best parts at different angles and linking them at normal speed to create a more interesting vid!
my best advise is to go to a gym and learn the basic's then head outside. Another advantage of gyms is you will meets lot's of climbers with different skill levels. Useing the gym as a starting point you can get of to a safe start. Take advantage of the knowledge the staff at the gym provide.
I've been passed on this route by people free soloing. It's not too technically difficult, but the entire route is very polished due to it's popularity.
not all do, some crazy bastards "onsight" free solo which means they know nothing about the route before they try it ... but i would be will to say that 90 % of climbers who free solo harder than 5.7 reherse the route on a rope first. Maybe im wrong and im just a pansy... i dont know.
I've onsight soloed up to 5.9 when I was onsighting 11d trad, 12d sport. Including the bastille, although when I was first starting out I climbed it with a rope. When I soloed it instead of going to the top I did the first pitch (crux) then downclimbed it.
Did you ever hear the story about the climber (forgot his name)that got into a fight with his girlfriend got pissed off ran from Boulder to Eldo then soloed the Diving Board in his running shoes? It's in one of John Long's books. I climbed the Naked Edge (roped) and fell off the last pitch because of the weird angle that traverses above the last pitch of the Diving Board. Never been so scared in my whole entire life! That dude had balls of steel.
Does anyone know what this is rated?
bigturtlehand 8 months ago
@bigturtlehand It is rated 5.7+ /5.8- depending on your exact route.

an epic of non-technical, ugly, long, unprotected slab climbing. real cool. Risk your life on something more worth while.

this looks like it was sped up a bit does it not????

it was sped up 50 % so people would watch it.... climbing is actually quite boring to watch. and youtube has a 10 min limit.

@mexymattl Where is this hunk of stone anyways? Looks like something i could tackle, with a rope of course lol :)

Probably inspired by Derek Hersey. He did some awesome free solos in Eldorado Canyon. Sadly he died in Yosemite.

minch333 4 years ago
dont know... kinda just went for it. I have climbed that route with a rope alot. So i knew it well and was less likley to make a mistake.
mexymattl 4 years ago
have all free climbers done the route on a rope first to make sure they can do it?
jasperjones86 4 years ago

no, you're definitely not a pansy! I sometimes get scared with the rope on. props to you, btw.
jasperjones86 4 years ago
I've onsight soloed up to 5.9 when I was onsighting 11d trad, 12d sport. Including the bastille, although when I was first starting out I climbed it with a rope. When I soloed it instead of going to the top I did the first pitch (crux) then downclimbed it.
