@29unigiant Thank You! someone here actually knows the secret XD
Teachers in middle and high schools like to engrave these " right and wrong " ways of play and its mostly b.s. If you can play welll and comfortably that way do it. Just like how they say never puff your cheeks when playing, look at any profesional bass trombonist or tuba. They do it because they need to when the play very low and loud notes
I cant really tell since this isn't the most HD video but I think he isn't holding his slide the proper way. It looks like he has a grip on it instead of 2 to 3 fingers. I play the trombone so I know.
@29unigiant "The proper way".... The way that suits you the most is the proper way. He can definetely play fast enough, so i wouldn't say he's doing anything wrong :)
@29unigiant It doesn't really matter how he holds the trombone, as long as he can play it. Wycliffe Gordon doesn't hold the slide in the generally accepted way, but he's still crazy good.
@29unigiant Guess what? I play the trombone, too. There's a little-known--secret. It doesn't matter how the fuck you hold it as long as you can get to all of the positions accurately and precisely.
@29unigiant Well see, the thing is recording companies usually don't care about holding the slide the "proper" way as long as you play well, which, by the way, is the important part. This guy is one of the best jazz trombonists of our time.
@29unigiant Who cares about holding the slide the 'proper' way, if you can play like that? I mean what really is the 'right' way? Jimi Hendrix played his guitar with the 'wrong' hand and the wrong way up, and look what it did for him...
Hokey as shit but still amazing.
